Obliviator

From Absit Omen Lexicon
(Redirected from Obliviator Headquarters)

Obliviator is the occupational title of a witch or wizard specially trained in the use of mental charms and employed by a wizarding governing body to help ensure that the Wizarding World is safely concealed from the non-magical community. Obliviators use Memory Charms to modify and/or erase the recollection of magical phenomena by non-witches/wizards, as per the International Statute of Secrecy.

Role in the Field

Obliviators are specialized in managing active situations. Most routine assignments to do with secrecy can be handed off to the Muggle-Worthy Excuse Committee or the Muggle Affairs Office, because these, if handled properly, rarely require memory-wiping.

In the field, Obliviators generally have four main roles:

  • During a catastrophe, they are early responders and are assigned to actively repel and wipe memories from muggle bystanders and witnesses. Obliviation is often required on-scene.
  • Assist Level Three's field mediwix. Injured muggles are stabilized and then triaged. Muggles that can be treated by muggle hospitals are usually Obliviated on the spot before being sent to muggle hospital. Muggles with magical injuries must go to St. Mungo's.
  • Clean-up: Following an incident, Obliviators are deployed to the area to locate muggle witnesses and wipe any remaining memories.
  • Deployment as requested by other divisions and departments.

Training

Training to become obliviator takes five to six months on average. Some can complete it sooner, and internships are available before a witch or wizard graduates from Hogwarts and can cut down on the amount of training once they have their N.E.W.T.s

Obliviators are trained in a variety of skills and procedures:

  • Mastery of memory charms, their safe execution, and discretion in using them. Obliviators must be able to reliably calibrate the strength of different memory charms.
  • Muggle culture: such as attire, vocabulary, muggle municipal structure - anything needed to appear a convincing muggle.
  • Deescalation and crowd control.
  • Familiarity with the tactics and procedures in other cooperating Departments, and how Level Three interacts in those situations.
  • Basic combat skills, to the extent of protecting oneself during dangerous inter-departmental operations, and self-defense against muggles.
  • Detailed nuance of the Statute of Secrecy

At Absit Omen

Concerning highly sensitive memories, Obliviators are subject to a strict Departmental oath of secrecy, disallowing them from revealing in any way things they learn during the performance of their duties.
