Note: For more information on the Auror profession and culture at Absit Omen, please refer to Aurors. For canon information on the Auror Corps, visit the Harry Potter Wiki.

This is a listing of the currently active Auror investigations at the Ministry of Magic. It is intended for both in-character and out-of-character coordination, so that the Auror writers can keep track of which characters are involved in what.

Any Auror writer can start a new investigation with their character, and any Absit Omen writer can suggest ideas for a new case. Non-Auror characters (such as Hitwizards) are more than welcome to join investigations when the circumstances call for it.

How to Use the Case Files

Any Auror writer is welcome to create a brand new investigation. You can invent a situation from scratch and use NPC antagonists, or develop a storyline with criminal characters in the game. If you want to investigate other played characters, just be sure to talk to their writers first!

Auror trainees will generally be assigned to work with an established Auror on any investigation. If you're having trouble finding an Auror to supervise your trainee, feel free to use an established NPC Auror or make up an NPC Auror of your own.

To Create a New Investigation:

  • Come up with an idea,
  • Start a plotting thread in the Plotting Development Board or send out a plotting PM,
  • Add it to the Case File list!

To Add an Investigation to the Case Files:

  • Edit it into the wiki, or
  • Post it on this thread and someone will add it for you!

To Join an Established Investigation:

  • Contact the other writers involved and let them know that you are interested, and then
  • Add your name to the list!

Current Investigations

Murders

Investigations into mysterious deaths, murders, or disappearances that are believed to be caused by dark magic.

Remembering Day Murders Investigation

On the tenth anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts, someone appearing to be Kyle Gibson assaulted a Remembering Day Ceremony and assassinated Auror Benjamin Timmins and Wizengamot member Leon Carter. The investigation into the mysterious attack is ongoing.

Corpus Inversus Murder Investigation

Wizengamot member Lazarus Rippringham-Gomfrey was found murdered in a gruesome fashion within the Tower of London. Early inquiries into his death suggest that black market trading may have been involved. When a Gringotts Arithmancer turns up dead in a similar manner, suspicions start to turn towards the goblins.

Kidnappings and Manhunts

The hunt for those who have gone missing, both willingly and unwillingly.

Apprehend Cinaed Tawse

The Wizarding Blood Alliance revealed itself in January 2009. Since then, the manhunt for its suspected leader, Cinaed Tawse, has become of utmost importance to the Ministry.

Apprehend Theodora Kingstreet

Theodora Kingstreet is a Most Wanted Witch, and suspected in crimes. She is considered highly dangerous. This case also concerns the handling of Jack Spade aka Devlin Matthews.

Black Market Trafficking

Investigations into smuggling and illegal imports, primarily those used in or created through the use of dark magic.

The Case of the Cursed Jewelry

A few pieces of jewelry were found to be cursed with dark magic. Mainly necklaces, they would be cursed to slowly grow smaller while being worn, eventually shrinking down to try and choke their victim. Luckily, so far no one has been severely injured, but it has alarmed Aurors and they have found that someone is trafficking these necklaces with dark magic laced in them.

Runespoor Smuggling

In January 2010, the investigation into the Runespoor Smuggling ring -- and Auror Tait Aldridge's 1994 murder -- was quietly reopened after new evidence came to light. Due to the extremely sensitive nature of the case, it is currently being kept very quiet by Head Auror Tamis Raynor.

Magical Vandalism & Destruction

Explosions, destruction, and the loosing of horrible beasts.

Explosion in Godric's Hollow

In January 2010, a magical explosion rocked the town of Godric's Hollow, a magical fire consuming part of the graveyard.

General Pilferage

Robberies, muggings, theft and other racketry.

Former Investigations

Closed Investigations

The following cases have been concluded in game and are considered closed.

Oulton Broad Murder Investigation

Full Case File On December 21, 2009, Grubson Windell murders Cynthia Windell in the quiet muggle town of Oulton Broad.

Halloween Muggle-Baiting in London

Full Case File On 31 October, 2009, Aurors responded to numerous reports of magic-upon-muggle incidents, including a rash of them in Soho and Trafalgar Square in London. Aurors Trevelyan and Eleor responded and arrested Dominik Wiedman and Niobe Thursby.

After Ministry official Azize Mulogo received praise in the Daily Prophet for his help in ferreting out the Runespoor Smuggling ring, it was suspected that he had become a target of those same smugglers. An assassination attempt was made on his life on 15 March 2009, but was foiled by the investigative team, though it resulted in the destruction of the Visitor's Entrance to the Ministry.

Baddrick Muggings

A span of dark-arts related robberies and muggings caught the eye of the Ministry in early 2009. Eventually, the crime wave was traced to Vesta Baddrick, a UK witch who had been experimenting with the Dark Arts. The case was closed with Baddrick's arrest.

Manhunt: Kyle Gibson

On Remembering Day 2008, an individual resembling graduating Hogwarts seventh year student Kyle Gibson murdered two individuals at the Hogwarts commemoration ceremony. The crime set off a national manhunt for Gibson. The case was closed when Gibson's body turned up off the coast of Scotland on 23 December 2008. Ironically, it was eventually determined by Auror Edward Pratt that Gibson had been framed for the murders through the use of Polyjuice Potion.

Manhunt: Dugan MacDuff

On 31 March 2009, Dugan MacDuff assaulted the family of retired Senior Auror Ackerly Fox. After the parents of Auror Edward Pratt were murdered a few days later, it soon became clear that MacDuff had started a one-man terror campaign against the Auror office. His two-month rampage ended with his apprehension and arrest on 5 June 2009 by an unsanctioned Ministry team.

Missing Person: Akiva Katz

Ministry Librarian Akiva Katz was kidnapped while going about her daily routine in August 2008. She was found alive but seriously injured at the Hogsmeade Woodcraft Festival, where she was apparently abandoned by her captor. Though no one was arrested, the WBA is suspected in the case.

Muhra Glass Robbery

On 18 May 2009, Nathan Briggs was caught in the act while robbing the Magicarium Apothecarium. Though Briggs was successfully apprehended, he managed to vanish away a valuable artifact called the Muhra Glass. Though the case was closed after Briggs' arrest and conviction, the Muhra Glass remains missing.

Protection Detail: Jacoba Schlagenweit and Matilda Quinn

Due to threats against them, muggle Jacoba Schlagenweit and squib Matilda Quinn were under Auror protection. The detail was presumably cancelled when Schlagenweit left England in June 2009.

Runespoor Smuggling

In early 2008, Ministry of Magic officials noticed an upswing in Runespoor-related injuries that were admitted to St. Mungo's. Ever since, there has been a noted rise in the Runespoor trafficking trade. The Aurors assigned to the case have made connections to past smuggling rings in the early 1990s, as well as similar operations overseas. Due to continued suspicions of moles within the Ministry, the ongoing investigation remains highly classified even after recent successes.

The Runespoor investigation was finally closed in August 2009 after the arrest of several high-profile smugglers and the seeming end to the Runespoor trade in the United Kingdom.

Runespoor Smuggling: Explosion in Diagon

On 14 October 2008, an explosion in Diagon Alley was traced to a large quantity of illegal Runespoor venom that had been hidden outside of the Black Chimaera. The subsequent investigation led to the arrest and conviction of Rafe Sellaphix, a local apothecary owner who had been in possession of the Runespoor venom.

Runespoor Smuggling: Ministry Corruption

In late 2008, an increase in the Runespoor Smuggling trade led Ministry officials to suspect that the smuggling ring was being aided by someone within the Ministry. An internal investigation led by Adon Eleor and (at the time) private consultant Jonas Trevelyan resulted in the arrest and conviction of DIMC official Trevor Reid on 9 January 2009.

Traitor in the Ministry

After the murder of Gawain Robards in October 2008, it became apparent that the WBA had access to information inside the Ministry. During Dugan Macduff's attacks on Ministry personnel, the possibility was raised that there was a traitor inside the Ministry. While suspect Liadan O Morain was being questioned about The Abduction of Robin Adani case, she outed Auror Trainee Christian Colburn as the spy, leading to his arrest.

Cold Cases

The following cases are inactive or have been put on hold pending the resumption of plots.

Missing Person: Robin Adani

In January 2008, toddler Robin Adani was discovered to be missing from his home. His parents, Aberdeen Spencer and Luke Adani, had no memory of his existence. Soon afterwards, people came forward with information that suggested the young boy had been kidnapped by his birth father, ex-Azkaban inmate Cináed Tawse. In the months that followed, it has been discovered that WBA sympathizers Liadán Ó Móráin and Christian Colburn were behind the kidnapping. Though the initial mystery has been solved, the hunt is still on to find Robin.

Missing Person: Analiza Snark

Analiza Snark went missing while in Egypt during the summer of 2009. She is a high-profile person and her absence suspected to be very suspicious.

Missing Person: Dreogan Eleor

The Head of the Muggle Affairs Office, Dreogan Eleor, was kidnapped from his home on the evening of 28 November 2009. His disappearance was seemingly linked to a Middle Eastern criminal organization known as The Group.
