Character Name: Jules Abbott

Character Age: 45
Character Occupation: Head of Spirit Division, Department for Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures

Why did your character change occupations and what qualifications do they have?:

Jules was part of Spirit Division before he went ‘on loan’ to Level 9 and was adopted as an unspeakable. He joined the Spirit Division about six months after the close of the war. He quickly learned the ropes, but did two stints with the unspeakables in the years that followed. He might have taken many more projects had the post in Spirit Division not come up, which he was asked to consider applying.

Character History 2013 - 2017:

At the close of 2012, Jules was still busy bottling dementors. He continued to work on the project, encasing dementors in enchanted bottles until the population was deemed at a manageable level. During this time, he was one of the unspeakables that observed that given enough food, the amortal beings could self-replicate, leading to suggestions that Britain had just been too darned happy before the dementor plague in the years before, and the dementors had just come to balance the books.

With a dementor bottle patent to his name (though all redacted due to being a Level Nine project) Jules had found himself at the end of the original project with Nine. Much as he’d enjoyed working with the unspeakables, not being able to talk about his day to day work was difficult for a talkative wizard.

He came back to Level Four in autumn 2013 as Ivy headed back to school for third year, Cassia started for first year and Heather started to get with her hitwix training. He no longer had to stay at home as much looking after the kids and a return to the more mundane spooky side of the Ministry meant he could reconnect with his dear wife, Daisy.

During this time, Jules unexpectedly was faced with his past. First, his effectively adoptive mother, Emma Glass lost her distinguished brother in an alarming conviction of the sitting Minister of Magic. Jules felt drawn to support her as his foster mother in his formative years. He knew all too well what it was like to have rats for brothers.

In 2015, one of his brothers, Norman, was released from Azkaban after being convicted of burglaries in 2012. By August 2017 another of his brothers, Willy, was released in after serving his full sentence for his role in dementors with Lawrence Musgrave. Both came sniffing for funds despite disowning their youngest brother in childhood. This was particularly distressing as none of Jules’ three daughters knew their uncles, and they began to be targeted by his rotten biological family, or at least wily Norman. Willy didn’t quite have the brains.

In November 2016 Jules was appointed Spirit Division Head. He wears the mantle with pride, but is not a conventional middle manager. He’s still terrible at finishing projects, and now suffers from way more headaches.

He and Peeves speak regularly, as the poltergeist continues to be a pain in the arse at Hogwarts, and the latest Headmaster doesn’t see him as a historical feature, more a pest.

Summary:

Jules returned to Level Four’s Spirit Division, and in late 2016 was appointed Head. If it wasn’t for this, he would have returned to Nine in a flash for another project. His second and third daughters are still at Hogwarts. His estranged family are intent on causing him trouble when they are not in Azkaban, opening up old wounds from childhood.
