Enoch Gamp

From Absit Omen Lexicon

Believing himself to be the wizard to hold the most power in Wizarding Britain, Enoch Batholemew Gamp is the Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot. He is traditional in values regarding Wizarding Britain and gender stereotypes, and has been married to his wife for 54 years. Together they have 6 adult children. Around the Ministry, Enoch is known to be friendly and sociable, but in court he is stern yet fair.

Appearance

Enoch looks like an appropriately traditional wizard. He is always seen in smart three piece suits, often tweed. He wears dark woollen robes in the winter with something lighter in summer. When outside, he will always don a hat despite his surprisingly thick head of grey hair. He walks with a cane, although this appears to be more for style than necessity as he suffers from no limp or ailment. On days he is in court, Enoch is a familiar sight in his plum robes.

Beneath the robes, Enoch is a fairly lithe figure. He maintains fitness with long walks and practising his duelling skills. He is tall, but not too tall, reaching 6 foot 1 inch on a good day. His face betrays his age, wrinkled and jowly.

Personality

A deeply traditional wizard, Enoch believes in the absolute supremacy of wizards over any other magical beings and beasts, and especially over muggles. He’s spent his career ensuring that the muggle and wizarding world do not collide, but as of recent years, his mind has changed considerably. Why not mix the worlds and demonstrate the superiority of Wizarding kind?

The traditionalist, and frankly outdated values that Enoch possesses filters even into the manner at which he has always managed his household. He is the master of not only the house elves he owns, but, Enoch believes, his entire immediate family. The wizard, Enoch believes wholeheartedly, should be the Master of the household, the provider and the ruler. His wife, Celeste Gamp, never questioned his manner, clearly enjoying a dominant man, and his children have mostly obeyed their father. Whether the children following was through fear or respect still remains a question with an answer that Enoch doesn’t much care for.

Such values do not mean, however, that Enoch isn’t a loving father or husband. He’s always been a romantic wizard, and loves his wife dearly. How can one expect devotion if one does not give it? Enoch has spent decades showering his wife with gifts, affection and had ensured that despite the world nearly imploding around them during the wizarding wars, she always felt safe.

Enoch is seen by others to be a wise and sensible wizard; a wizard to have at your back in a time of crisis and one who will act in court without visible bias. He is level headed, brave and a very powerful wizard.

Despite never needing to work due to his wife’s inheritance, Enoch has never shirked hard work and still, at the age of 75 remains the Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot. He is the antithesis of an idle wizard, much preferring to be active either mentally or physically. He takes long walks and even owns one of Monty Pepper’s flying cars.

Away from his stern role on the Wizengamot, Enoch presents himself as a friendly, elderly wizard. He is chatty and will spend time asking how the wife and kids are when he bumps into his friends and acquaintances in the Ministry or just about anywhere really. He tries to be approachable, to build trust with people. Enoch enjoys the parties that take place in his pureblood circles, and spending time with his family. He is a keen wizards chess player, and can often be bribed into a game of exploding snap.

History

Enoch was the youngest of four boys, following Mortimer, Edmund and Percival Gamp. His upbringing was rather simple. He was a couple of years behind Percival in attending Hogwarts, and he had much of the family legacy to live up to. Unlike his three older brothers who were Slytherin, however, Enoch was sorted into Ravenclaw.

He did well at Hogwarts, earning strong NEWTS in Defence Against the Dark Arts, Charms, Transfiguration, Potions and History of Magic. In his seventh year, Enoch also started to date Celeste Lestrange. He left Hogwarts and went straight into the Auror corps in 1960.

Upon his qualification as a full auror, Enoch proposed to his girlfriend and they married in 1964. Over the preceding years, Enoch and Celeste had a grand total of 6 children, both sharing the belief that as many pureblooded witches and wizards flooding the country as possible could only be a good thing.

Despite being a traditionalist, Enoch’s never clearly demonstrated any hatred towards those other than purebloods. A wizard was a wizard regardless of blood. So when each wizarding war broke out, he was very careful how he played his part. During the second war, he was a member of the order of the phoenix. Protecting wizarding society from the ruin that Voldemort threatened was far more important than demonstrating pureblood superiority over muggleborns.

Following the second wizarding war, Enoch became the Head of the Department for Magical Law Enforcement, a role he kept for 5 years until the Wizengamot called to him. By now, he was 62, and a little slower than his younger days, but no less powerful. Enoch had made a name for himself in being fair, understanding and having a keen understanding of wizarding law.

In 2010, Enoch was elected as the Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot, and has been in position through 4 Ministers.

Current Role

Enoch is the wizard who presides over the Wizengamot, overseeing parliamentary affairs and court procedures. Enoch’s day to day work is carried out from his ostentatious office within the administrative headquarters in the Department of Law Enforcement. He aids the minister in selection of wizengamot elders, is a key member needed when passing new laws, and will preside over most criminal trials.

Enoch spent 44 years as an auror and then Senior Auror, several years as the Head of the Department for Law Enforcement, and a few as a Wizengamot elder. He has a keen understanding of wizard h politics and the law, and has always been seen as a wise, intelligent and fair wizard.
