Mortimer was in his eighties, and was a prisoner held at St Mungo's until a transfiguration accident on 14th February 2012. Until February 2011, he was a wrinkled but respected unspeakable, and Head of the Department of Mysteries. He is married to Lyra Gamp (missing or dead) and father to Orion Gamp, Cepheus Gamp and Andromeda Gamp.

From February 14th 2012, Mortimer self-transfigured permanently into an umbrella, due to a magical accident after absorbing another's magical potential. It is unclear whether he is in semi-permanent limbo, or dead, as a result.

Unspeakable History

He joined the Department of Mysteries after finishing at Hogwarts and has performed research of all manners in the Department with a particular leaning to the study of how magic manifests itself in individuals - studying its development in children. Before and during the second wizarding war, Mortimer was heavily researching into the possibility of witches and wizards losing their magical potential, whether to transfer to another, or to dissipate it entirely. He put himself forward to take on the role of Department Head due to his age and experience, and because he feels it is time.

In February 2011, Mortimer was arrested for the kidnap and torture of Hogwarts students (see Mischief Unmanaged). He absorbed magic from the students, in an experimental process. He was found guilty and confined to St Mungo's hospital. In August 2011 a select committee of the Wizengamot and St Mungo's healers judged if it safe to move him to Azkaban, but the decision was made to retain him, as he was still able to perform wandless magic.

In early February 2012 he transfigured several objects and a healer at St Mungo's into umbrellas. They were able to be reversed with some effort.

On 14th February 2012, during a breakout attempt with Lyra Gamp, Mortimer self-transfigured into an umbrella permanently by accident.
