Artworks
Obderedria's Art Morgue, as inspired by the works of Marjane Satrapi, Antonio Profías, Martin Handford & Mark Kistler

Playlists
Inspirational musics, nat. Before getting underway I need to pin a message from former member Sparky, who surprised me with a music playlist for my cast. It's one of the few old Dobby Swap gifts I still have access to, as ones from certain sites like Polyvore became defunct.

Happy Holidays, Will!

I am a big music lover, and I always enjoy trying to translate my characters through song -- I really believe that music can capture the nuances of emotion even better than the static written word sometimes.  Even though I don't know your characters as well as mine, I thought it would be fun to go through and try to do the same for them -- with the side goal of maybe introducing you to a new group or two that you might enjoy in the process.  :)

For the most part, I tried to pick singers or groups that fit the feel of the character, whether it's the classic power of The Highwaymen for Sissel, the macabre themes of the Villagers for Ligeia, or the earnest longing of Lisa Hannigan for Drea.  (The only exception is Casey -- he is unsurprisingly a tough one to find music for!) Hopefully a few of these will match your ideas about the characters [...]
-- Sparky

Sparky's reccomendations have been foundational to starting many of these playlists, which will be updated within their own posts. The Youtube versions allow me to track down more stuff than the Spotify versions. Suggestions for additional tunes welcome!

Obderedria's Art Morgue
If I had kept up with refining my own art style, I probably would have tried to be a cartoonist. Now I can reference that with Drea's artistic talents. Her style is a blend of five of my favorite cartoonists.

Wait...didn't I mention only four in her updated career form? The one representing her "mood art" will be a surprise for later...

Drea's characters borrow the most from Marjane Satrapi and Antonio Profías, sometimes Martin Handford style crowdwork. Architecture and landscape composition borrow from Profías, Handford and mainly Mark Kistler. Her creature features are also influenced by Kistler.

Marjane Satrapi - Persepolis, Chicken with Plums
Wikipedia
Marjane is a French-Iranian cartoonist, filmmaker, and children's book author. Many of her graphic novels detail her life or those of people she knew in response to various regimes. The two Persepolis books (and the animated adaption) follow her growing up in Iran and Vienna during the time of the Islamic Revolution. Chicken with Plums follows a relative of hers, a Tar player. These were first published in French before translations.

Marjane has a crisp yet fluid, emotional art style. Somewhat simplified but it really packs a punch for the dramatic subject matter she covers. Yet her humor and spirit of rebellion shines through. I was first introduced to her work during an early college course. I have Persepolis on DVD but it's been ages since I watched it. Referenced are an excerpt and film poster.

Antonio Prohías - Spy Vs Spy
Wikipedia
Antonio was a Cuban cartoonist who came to the US after Fidel Castro rose to power. He worked for an important Cuban newspaper, El Mundo from the late 40s to 50s. He was known for political cartoons and satire with brutally violent characters, such as El Hombre Siniestro, La Mujer Siniestra (The Sinister Man/Sinister Woman) and Tovarich, a Communist Russian that parodied Fidel. In 1960 he worked in a New York garment factory as he worked on a portfolio to submit to Mad magazine. His most noted cartoon is Spy vs Spy, the characters modified from El Hombre Siniestro's design, of which he wrote 241 strips and 6 paperback collections, signing off the strips in morse code (By Prohías). The Spies have been adapted to animated shorts for Mad TV, advertisements and video games, along with comics drawn by other illustrators.

Antonio has an energetic, madcap yet intricately crafted style. The Spies are always one-upping each other and whoever will survive the outcome is often a surprise from some last second gambit. He tired of introducing the lady Grey Spy, because she would always triumph over the other two, making those strips the most predictable. Part of my comic anthology collection are the first two Spy vs Spy casebooks collected by Mad. Referenced are a comic and book cover.

Martin Handford - Where's Wally?
Wikipedia
Martin is a British children's author and illustrator specializing in crowd scenes. His most famous character, Wally (Waldo for us Americans) was suggested as a focal point for the crowd work. Soon this traveler of the realms would be joined by other recurring characters, with details and gimmicks becoming more elaborate over the original seven books. Martin is a modern example of Wimmelbilderbuch (teeming picture book) or hidden picture book, although such crowd scenes date back to Hieronymous Bosch and contemporaries.

Martin has a deceptively simple yet intricate style. Most of the 2-page spreads are drawn to printed scale, ranging from 300 to 500 characters for a given scene that on average takes 8 weeks to draw. I remember when I first looked through The Fantastic Journey in daycare. My favorite books were in Hollywood & The Wonder Book. Wally has also been adapted to animated shows and video games, including an excellent mobile adaptation of several books that wasn't too cash-grabby yet was taken offline. In fact, Lambert Windell (Wizard Whitebeard) is overdue for another appearance, since the last time Obderedria encountered him at Hogwarts. Referenced is an scene from The Wonder Book.

Mark Kistler - Draw in 3D, Draw Squad
Wikipedia
Mark is an American artist who host various drawing instruction programs for children and families. His works include instruction books, seminars, videos, television series and an online website. He had a few programs on PBS including The Secret City and Imagination Station. Most recently, he has appeared in a 2023 documentary about his career, The Secret Cities of Mark Kistler.

I learned the most as an artist from Mark's methods. Although cartoony, he teaches elements of perspective, contour and shading to create 3-dimensional looking drawings. It was my middle school art/gym teacher that ran an after school "Draw Squad" inspired by his books and I have purchased several. I've never actually seen any of his shows, something I hope to rectify before I watch the documentary. Referenced are selected book covers.

Helio’s Tapes
Yes the stupid puns aren't just confined to her tropes page!
YouTube
Spotify
Explicit: 0

Almost tragically, Heliotrope doesn't come with a Sparky recommendation! But I've found various tunes with my own eclectic tastes. Deets below.
Jump (single) | me n ü
I have a rule for my xfinity radio in my car, which is nicknamed Rhythm & Blues. It's to have stations with a blue theme, mainly blues or jazz. The Chill station skates by for mood. I've heard this one multiple times. I can't think of anything that better represents Helio's "in the moment" approach to life where she rarely gets overburdened by what if. She'll take the jumps she knows how to take.
Submarine (Espresso); Nautilus (One) | Bob James
My other main listening source are smooth jazz stations, which I often save as snapshots on my phone to remember. This is an early photo with a thematic title, although I really like the cool jazzy beat along with the bridge. It's also similar to music I've picked from the Leverage series.

Everything I like in "Submarine" is also present in "Nautilus." Ah cool, when did Bob James write these? Wait, Nautilus was in 1974 and Submarine in 2018?? Nautilus has been one of his most sampled songs and a few motifs were taken into Submarine as well. I guess the songs are like a large body of water; you don't realize how deep it is until you are there.
Fins & Fiddles (Splatune 2) | Ryo Nagamatsu
Fan Cover on Spotify

I love me the Splatoon games, although I've been absent from 3 from some time. In universe, the band Bottom Feeders is one of the groups that license music for inky Turf Battles. The Celtic Punk vibe is strong with this group. It's both the tamest and raucous of the various rock and pop songs featured in the series that fit Heliotrope. She'd be liable to tie up a foe in seaweed from a night drinking should they mess with her friends.
Soldiers of the Sea (Return of the Obra Dinn OST) | Lucas Pope
The 2018 game by Lucas Pope in a similar vein of 'deductive thriller' compared to 2013's Papers, Please. A sea-fearing tale in a unique monochrome pixel presentation, Obra Dinn is a fantastic nautical mystery. Imagine if Cap'n Jack Sparrow's compass in Pirates of the Carribean was instead a pocket watch that guided an insurance investigator to the moments of death aboard a ghost ship. And that premise is all the spoilers you'll get. As for this titular track of one of the game's chapter, it has dual meanings in the narrative. Another action-y song for Heliotrope.
The Distant Spring (Pikmin OST) | Hajime Wakai
YouTube Only

I'm very much a Nintendo Gamecube fanboy, being one of my favorite eras of video games. The debut of the Pikmin series is really the most alien and ethereal. The Distant Spring is an aquatic area with a tranquil, yet serenely sinister ambiance, as if there are dangers to be found in the water. (such as a notorious secret boss) This cycles through the calm and combat motifs for the daytime and evening sections of play. Fitting for the serene yet cautious approach one should have with merfolk.
Berceuse (Aphelion) | Amethystium
Easy listening style channels, such as Soundscapes, are another favorite to have on in the house. Ethereal, natural world inspired electronic is showing up quite frequently on Helio's set, and this is one snapped onto my phone.
Courthouse Rock: Interdimensional Portal (New Visions In Sedona) | Alexander
Another found on Soundscapes, and its inspiration is as far removed from the ocean you can get for biome. That being the desert vistas of Sedona, Arizona. There's a very mystic quality to this atmospheric track. Something for when Helio is more questioning or introspective.
Noki Bay (Super Mario Sunshine OST) | Shinobu Tanaka
Fan Cover on Spotify

Another Gamecube classic. The tropical environment of Isle Delfino is well crafted. It's the first 3D Mario game I played to completion. While the 64 is more highly regarded, I always found the game the most uncanny in presentation of the N64 games. Splatoon is almost a spiritual antithesis of this game (spreading ink versus washing graffiti) and the shellfish population of the Nokis are quite interesting. The pipes and percussion compliment what is the most untouched area of the island, commercially speaking. As the ancestral home of the Noki is filled with cliffside ruins and strange coral. This is the main theme without added layers. It hits the subtle nuances of how I've wanted to tease out elements of Helio's own colony's culture compared to other merfolk.
Inside Job (Leverage OST) | Joseph LoDuca
A reminder from Will that Leverage and its sequel are fantastic shows that you should watch. How have Gina Bellman and Aldis Hodge not been picked for Face Claims at AO yet?! Beth Riesgraf's portrayal of resident wonder-thief Parker is a third of Helio's inspirations (and thanks to this show a plethora of GMYBS gifs for her). Normally the jazzy, thrilling heist music of the show is too bombastic of a vibe for my aims with Heliotrope. She is quite the gymnast on top of being a swimmer but she's not a criminal. Yet she will approach her duties with the same zeal and unique perspective. This tune is often used in series for the subtle parts of infiltrating a building, and shares a title with a major Parker focused episode where she leapt into a high stakes job without alerting the team, for good reason it turned out. She may not always fit in but Helio is direct and decisive with her intent.
Murky Moon (Presence) | Kayla Waters
Another recent favorite making the rounds on the Watercolors smooth jazz station, which sometimes labels itself as 'sea jazz.' Kayla is a pianist and daughter of saxophonist Kim Waters, both prominent jazz composers. I like the track for being tranquil but also rather driven, befitting Heliotrope's personality. The title 'Murky Moon' also harkens to when I rejoined the site in having Helio joining in with events planned by Kit & Gris for the lead-up to Lucinda Temple's full moon abduction. Helio is an impromptu guest during their bar crawl (pub-trudging) and her desire to try some 'Murky Lake' whiskey adds to the confusion when the revelers mistake Luce's absence.
Ice House~Idle (Wallace & Gromit in Project Zoo OST) | Alistair Lindsay
YouTube Only

Level music from a lesser known area of the franchise. The titular duo discover the polar bear they sponsor at the zoo, Archie, has been kidbear-napped by Feathers McGraw as he takes over the whole facility. So this has likely been rendered non-canon by "Vengeance Most Fowl" (have yet to see it as of this writing). The gameplay is kind of interesting as you platform and combat with Gromit to escort the less nimble Wallace to various stations for repairs and inventions, plus some vehicle sections.

The Polar level, like many in the game, has a vertical mixing effect by having the music switch to the same part of a matching song via a gameplay transition. The stages for this game use 'Idle', 'Action' & 'Combat' as designations, of which I included the Idle version. Helio's biological cues towards the cold are quite unusual. She can withstand far colder temperatures than most without freezing to death, she's just lethargic instead. The base layer of the level music sounds plenty chilling, while the introduction of the other versions match her dynamics with her friends. Drea is the lifelong fan of whimsical stuff like Wallace & Gromit. If they were somehow in the situation of the game Helio would be clamboring all over the place like Gromit while Philo's tinkering is on point with Wallace.
Snowbound (Curves Ahead) | The Rippingtons
A member of my IRL trivia/gaming group considers the Rippingtons "Weather Channel" music as they were often used in backing local weather updates. Founded in 1985 by composer Russ Freeman, the Rippingtons are a jazz fusion group with a 30 year history, with regulars collaborating with many smooth jazz and R&B artists. Their mascot is the jazzy, beret and sunglasses wearing cat.

For a time I considered this music was too 'enthusiastic' for Heliotrope, almost assigning it to Sissel. But that's a mistake, a folly of me thinking of Helio when she was first introduced as an emotionally stunted student. Revisions for adult plots shows she's plenty passionate and emotive, her difficulty comes from navigating emotional states rather than having them. Snowbound is not an 'icy' sound compared to the likes of the Ice House theme listed prior. It is incredibly active and driving, along with featuring saxophone without it being overblown, which is instrumentation that makes me think of Heliotrope.
Flying (HP CoS Game Soundtrack) | Jeremy Soule
YouTube Only

Picture 2002. The cinematic film for Chamber of Secrets is pending based on 2001's smash hit of PS/SS, the films about 4 years behind their book releases at this point. Video game tie ins are also popular. WB, EA and the author have yet to have their worst practices revealed. So despite some notes from the studio and use of actor likeness, the games are being developed independently. Game composer Jeremy Soule has been working on the two games to develop a soundtrack in no relation to John Williams' film score. The result is just as enchanting for the video game adaption of the stories that still stand on their own to this day, even closer to the books in a few respects. Youtuber Flandrew goes into the differences of the 5 Chamber of Secrets games released over various platforms.

The soundtrack I'll use is from the Playstation/Xbox/Gamecube versions, of which I played the latter extensively. It's where tidbits like Mirabella Plunkett inspiring Helio's story or Edgar Strougler giving Ursula a name come from, both being on collectible Chocolate Frog cards. As such I'll be giving every character originally written as a student a selection from the soundtrack. "Flying" exhibits the freedom to explore the rather limited but not too sparse castle and grounds. It's rarely seen but Heliotrope is the best flyer of my cast, given she can adapt her swimming strengths to the air with a broom. And vice-versa for tempered brooms aiding in deep water.

Obderedria & Beverly
YouTube
Spotify
Explicit: 1

BONUS!: 2025 Dobby Swap Gift from Gris!
DREA x LUCE - Spotify
Explicit: 2

An Ocean and a Rock (Sea Sew) | Lisa Hannigan
At heart, Drea is a dreamer -- perhaps that's why she's so susceptible to the wiles of Beverly the Puca.  So much of her life has been hidden away from her, whether by memory charms or her own lack of self confidence or perception, but as she continues to grow and discover her own strength, she's sure to find ways to break through, even when it seems as if the people she seeks are far, far away. --Sparky

This is very cozy and whimsical in the lyrics. It very much fits the album art of fuzzy sewn patches. Sparky's description hits the nail on the head. You could take the lyrics metaphorically, like with Drea's fuzzy memories, or literally on the summers when Heliotrope for example would likely be an ocean away.
Windbringer (Dreamcypher) | The Crüxshadows
Beverly is the bold, brave antithesis to Drea's meek, faltering courage.  As a Puca, she often appears to be a force of nature herself, and seems determined to break the young girl out of her shell whether she likes it or not.  But even with the best of Beverly's intentions, there is still danger to her actions, because it is impossible to harness the wind. --Sparky

My forgotten original favorite of playlist Sparky gifted. Once we get to the second chorus ("I bring the winds, to free you from your hesitation") the piece really hits for how well it fits Beverly. It's written in a different decade but it reminds me some of the songs used in The Neverending Story film. The Crüxshadows will make another appearance in Casey's playlist.
The Girl in Byakkoya; Parade (Paprika OST) | Susumu Hirasawa
Fan Cover on Spotify, ‘Parade’ Only

I first rented Paprika through my college library, having become a fan of Satoshi Kon during my high school years. The main crux of the film sees a deep delve of dreams gone awry when it starts impacting reality. There's an infamous story at my dorm of getting halfway through the film where a character says "the director has cut the power" and experiencing a building wide power outage at that very moment!

These two tracks carry the main musical motifs of the film. The Girl in Byakkoya has a more wondrous, optimistic tone, whereas Parade comes of as surreal, unhinged in contrast. Very fitting for the delicate balance of Drea's overactive imagination.
Vs. Minnie (Magical Tetris Challenge OST) | Masato Kouda
Fan Cover on Spotify

My first Tetris game was played on the N64 of this dual release on PS1. As in a Disney licensed version of the tetris with pentomino pieces through into the mix to screw up the classic tetromino pieces. Mickey, Minnie, Donald & Goofy have very thematic stages for what limited story exists. The music has no right to slap this hard, yet the composer did a fantastic job for the playful, electronica inspired loops. Minnie's board is a gigantic oven in her bakery, hence the identification with Drea's baking talents. Although I always thought it was a fridge as a kid as fitting the ambiance.
Opening Titles (Wee Sing in the Big Rock Candy Mountains; 35 secs in) | Lyrick Studios
YouTube Only

Yes, I was an unabashed childhood fan of Wee Sing video tapes as a 90s kid. BRCM is in my top three, and for what 'morals' you can take from the barely existing plot of this video is mainly about being a good friend. Don't always exclude yourself from being with others if you can't find a shared activity. A sorta retort to "my way or the highway" style of thinking. Regardless, the girl Lisa in the film retreats to her play fort with her (possibly alive?) stuffed animals and there's even a 'Little Bunny Foo Foo' as the tallest member of the cast. Huh.

Minus the big back yard to play in this is exactly the kind of stuff Drea daydreamed about as a kid, such as taking her favorite candy & foods and applying it to some other environment. Very inner child for her. The overture has many 'nursery rhyme/playground songs' of melodies that would take many lyrical forms; Jimmie Crack Corn is another identifiable riff.
Judy Bound ~ Candied Dance (Gyakuten Kenji 2 Original Soundtrack) | Noriyuki Idaware
YouTube Only

Known to us in the west as Ace Attorney Investigations 2, which recently got an official translation for the remastered spinoff collection of the Phoenix Wright games staring prosecutor Miles Edgeworth. This is one of my favorite mystery franchises so I identify various themes with others in my cast. We'll see Edgeworth crop up alongside Casey, for example. This track follows the prevalent theme of 'sweet, candied notes' fitting many of Drea's selections. I only got as far as this case when playing the fan translation, which explores a crime decades in the following one of Mile's deceased father's, Gregory Edgeworth's cases, involving high tier dessert chefs. It's one of those bouncy, quirky themes often given in series to the more eccentric characters.
Picture Perfect (acoustic, single) | Charity Vance
YouTube Only

When I was coming back to AO, Gris surprised me in talks when Gloria was the second character I reactivated after Helio. In that I was thinking of how Gloria and Lucinda would fare as Artemis Coven roommates. Gris was asking which way Obderedria swings. I hadn't thought about her sexuality, outside of knowing it was 'too simple & boring' for me to have Drea & Philo a couple, as I'd rather not write both sides of a romance. So taking an open mind we started a test RP on discord. Which has become our favorite thing to see the dynamics of them dating, as a lot of things just clicked.

All this to say shaping their relationship on AO is subjected to a different pace than single lines back and forth. But these two songs I could see as 'I love you' from the perspective of one to the other. Picture Perfect would Drea's message to Luce, given a broad interpretation of the lyrics. The song is calm and sweet, fitting Drea's pastimes and what dynamic she brings beyond her more gullible moments. At heart she's a romantic that never let herself fall in love, as bandied in the time jump backstory for her and Philo where his love confession was done in an unhealthy way. She's absolutely gaga for Luce despite her naivety in dating.
LUNCH (Hit Me Hard and Soft) | Billie Eilish
The second half of my love song picks between Luce & Drea explained above. I sincerely regret not coming back to AO sooner when Gris first joined, to see our shared characters at Hogwarts together. No guarantees their dynamic would have turned out the way they are now, however.

If "Picture Perfect" reads like a classic love song from Drea's sentimental PoV, "LUNCH" is the modern, confident take from Luce who knows exactly what she wants from the relationship. Plus I really like the driving backbeat. Although the AO sequence of their dating is still building, we draw from material that plays around with concepts like 'sweetness' or 'appetite' given the dynamics of their magic like Luce being a werewolf. Lucinda is similar to Beverly in tugging on Drea in new ways, now that she has a backbone compared to her lacking confidence as a youth.
Nightingale: Into The Light (Connection) | Karunesh
Another Soundscapes find, this is from an album of New Age music released by German artists in 1991. There's a zen, astral feeling tinged with the beauty of a dark night. It reminds me of the Moon (XVIII) Tarot motifs I use with Drea's stories. There's parts of her memories/visions/psyche that are unknown and alien, but there's always a new dawn to hope for.
Together Forever (Whenever You Need Somebody) | Rick Astley
Yes, he's done more music than what's become the Rickroll meme. Throughout the years even, as I've enjoyed listening to his music unironically. This is also on his debut album as the infamous song and holds up tightly to it, I feel. We're back to Beverly's perspective as I once interlaced this song with a thread to show the Puca's yearning. She'll do anything to support Drea in trying to get the witch properly aware of her existence, where they can be together forever again as equals. Going as far to eschew the usual aloofness of púca in becoming obsessed with artists like Rick Astley and other elements of pop culture as she looks for elements to navigate Drea's dreams.
Daylight (Simlish version) | Matt & Kim
Original Version on Spotify

The original song is already poppy and catchy. But we're going the extra mile for the nonsense lyrics the artists recorded for the first Sims 3 Expansion, World Adventures. Which I played heavily during my original AO run when I started making Sim versions of various writers' characters (see the Dessert Bar under my Recaps page). There's a spontaneity to this song Drea would've longed for as a kid, trying to enact her 'Beverly' style imaginary adventures into actual events in the Wizarding World with her friends.
I Believe I Can Fly; & I Have Nothing | Covers by Bianca Ryan
’I Believe I Can Fly’ covered by Bianca; original 'I Have Nothing' by Whitney Houston on Spotify

Early America's Got Talent contestant Bianca Ryan was once the youth face claim for Obderedria. Which inspired Drea's lesser seen artistic talent of being able to belt out songs like Bianca with her powerful voice, although I wrote her as being too timid to stand out during her first few years at Hogwarts. (I really need her in a karaoke thread now!)

R Kelly's classic "I Believe I Can Fly" is heavily associated with the opening of Space Jam for me, which is also one of Drea's favorite films. A message she very much needed to take to heart to break out of her shell. Then, to Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing" is to bookend Drea finally putting herself out there, taking a stance to no longer let others' perceptions about herself nor her own keep her from who she loves. And its nice to see the stages of Bianca's career again even if she never achieved super stardom. Her cover of Whitney Houston's song was after some vocal cord surgery, I believe, and she's still got it!
Spattergroit (Spattergroit) | The Parselmouths
A new find for me of an older bit of Potter fandom. I was looking for some wrock (wizarding rock) inspired music to lace within the first dreamscape nonsense for Drea and company since my return. The Parselmouths was started by fans Kristina Horner and Brittany Vahlberg, with this the titular track of their second album. Drea would actually listen to this song in universe. It has a very indie feel even before the 'classroom instruments' kick in, with a discordant key change after each verse. Who know a song about a disgusting magical disease could be so catchy?
Fireflies (Ocean Eyes) | Owl City
Perhaps Owl City's biggest jam. Another low key Minnesota rep (like Beth Riesgraf, Helio's FC, also hailing from the state). My friend Gemini used some pieces like "Take to the Sky" for Alvis Norling. Back in my early AO days I would have put this on Sissel's list because of the line "I like to make myself believe that planet earth turns slowly" and thought I was being clever with time metaphor. Clearly this better suited for Drea's stories. Such as the chorus about staying awake versus sleep and verse 3's "But I'll know where several are if my dreams get real bizarre /'Cause I saved a few and I keep them in a jar (Jar, jar, jar)"
Never Ending Story (The NeverEnding Story OST) | Limahl
Sometime, somewhen, even if I haven't threaded it, Beverly has totally gone and pulled a (black furred) Falkor in one of Obderedria's dreams. Given my comparisons of Crüxshadows "Windbringer" to this song it's a surprise I haven't put in on this playlist earlier. The song and films are very fitting for Drea & Beverly. Yes, even the biazarro sequels have their charms for me even though the first is better beloved. When I was a kid I had a hard time telling the voices of the singers apart so I didn't realize the song was actually a duet >.>
Diagon Ambient (HP CoS Game Soundtrack) | Jeremy Soule
YouTube Only

Continuing with what I liked about the CoS game, I'd frequently restart a spare save file so I could go back and replay the tutorial levels. The game opens with learning gnome chucking at The Burrow, then has Harry escape from Borgin & Burkes. Most hilariously, Lucius Malfoy is selling a LUMOS spellbook with the artifacts he's trying to offload before Arthur Weasley's raids, clearly the most sinister of dark artifacts. After your Knockturn adventure you explore the rest of Diagon to retrieve Ginny's lost school items and this is the first theme you hear in the main street. It's my favorite theme in the soundtrack. Although Obderedria has had a myriad of emotional experiences along the iconic street, there is a coziness that fits her aesthetic. That ultimately, things are going to be alright.
Polkarama! (Straight Outta Lynwood) | Werid Al Yankovic
Me and a friend from high school way more versed in music than me were big fans of Weird Al. I've met him thrice during various tours he's had thru Minnesota. To the point, not only is Beverly a fan of polka, her total nonsense approach to understanding pop culture as a dream traveling púca is very much in the vibe of a Weird Al song. This has a few of my favorite songs sampled in the polka medley, for a few opaque nods to some of my other characters.
Жить легко (Zhit legko; single) | LOBODA
Explicit, YouTube Only

I wouldn't be able to tell you how I came across this song. It's entirely in Russian, by Ukrainian singer Svetlana Laboda, noted in Eastern European countries. So for many years I found the tune incredibly catchy without knowing what the lyrics meant. Some context before I bring it home; as of this writing (May 2025) Svetlana has been in the entertainment industry since 2000 and nearly 20 years as a solo artist. These days she supports her home country in the conflict with Russia, both with volunteer efforts out of her office and songs written since 2022. Even in the late 2000s several of her songs were written in support of her favorite causes. In 2009, her song "Be My Valentine" was submitted for the Ukrainian qualifying round of Eurovision 2009, from her Anti-Crisis Girl album. While performing well in the preliminaries she only placed 12th as a finalist.

And now to the highly satirical music video for her 2010 follow up single. By which the title roughly translates to "Live Easy" or "Life is Easy." Svetlana has retreated from public life, a recluse in her apartment with her dog, having gained considerable weight from eating copious amounts of pizza. (It's a fat suit) The television footage, posters, and old costumes around her flat indicate her 'fall from grace' from the low ranking at Eurovision. But as the music video continues on Svetlana aims to get back into shape. "But who said life was easy?" (grammar adjusted) is her question in the chorus, as the verses mention people of many kinds of jobs, politics, and orientations; with a derogatory word censored. "You're in trouble" because "living the way you want doesn't work". Woven within the very ear-wormy, mostly nonsense phrase of "Labudi-budi-labudibudai"

All of this I've only researched recently. Yet a once superficial liking of this song resonates much more strongly post my hiatus from Absit Omen. I've eclipsed the period where Obderedria lived a life that didn't work for her, when complexes about her weight and memories were at their worst. While I'm teasing a few things out from that period, Drea has already improved much of her health by 2018. Much like finally interpreting the message behind Loboda's song, sorta like discerning divinations, that were right there all along...

Philo is clearly entranced by Obderedria Pienas -- even at twelve years old, he seems truly, deeply in love with her, but he struggles to find ways to express how deeply he cares underneath his drifting, urgent earnest. --Sparky

A very moody piece that only gets better for representing Philo's conflicted infatuation with Drea as they've aged from 2nd years. It's already hard enough for some boys to admit to loving a girl. Besides liking her hair and sweet disposition, he's also been attracted to her weight and curves. Which can be a thorny topic for fat admiration, body positivity, health and such (at least when Philo was first written). I thank Sparky for picking a very brooding song for Philo's gloomy, somewhat pessimistic disposition.
Professor Layton series: Future British Gentleman~Luke's Theme (Eternal Diva OST); Town of Water~Misthallery Day (Last Specter OST) | Tomohito Nishiura
YouTube Only

Almost any track from any game in the Professor Layton series is spot-on for Philo. Who has some parallels to co-protagonist Luke Triton, down to how he used to dress. I won't bombard you with the whole franchise soundtrack but there's a very folksy, puzzle complimenting ambiance that fits an antiquated London/European aesthetic. There's heavy use of violin, xylophone & accordion, which are instant Philo instruments for me. The titular professor being an archeologist is in some ways how I've decided Philo should specialize in that career. I've borrowed a few elements from the series built upon in new ways, like the Irregularity Camera or workbench briefcase.

These two tracks from lead composer Tomohito Nishiura take place in the 'prequel trilogy' via a film and video game. "Future British Gentleman" takes place at the bonkers climax of Eternal Diva and is the boldest you would ever see Philo. Luke Triton is very much the Gryffindor to Philo's Ravenclaw in this scene. The Misthallery theme is my favorite background theme of the series, which was revealed to be Luke's hometown. And there's also some mild connection to the quirks of his friends Helio & Drea in the concept of the latter piece thanks to its sweet yet melancholic tone.
Tell Her About It (An Innocent Man) | Billy Joel
You should have listened to the Piano man's advice, Philo! This is one of two 'love songs' I've had picked from Philo's perspective to Drea. His incredible awkwardness for never admitting his crush on her until it was too late is the very thing this song warns against.
Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car (Tear Down These Walls) | Billy Joel
The second pick of love songs from Philo's perspective, although we can move beyond Obderedria to a dream date scenario. As in, when Philo can finally work up the courage and not just ogle the women he fancies from afar. Billy Ocean is another favorite of mine like Billy Joel. An 80's piece with a well placed sax solo always makes me a happy boy. I'm in the process of establishing what the actual 'car' for this track would be for Philo as well, as flying cars like the Ford Anglia from the second book was one of my favorite elements of the series.
The Clocks (Hugo OST) | Howard Shore
The Invention of Hugo Cabret as adapted to a feature film came out the same year I started at Absit Omen, 2011. As mentioned elsewhere the 1930s train station and silent film foundation of the film fits everything I wish to capture with Philo's aesthetic. There's an all star cast including Asa Butterfield, Chloë Grace Moretz, Ben Kingsley, and a Sacha Baron Cohen role I actually like. Plus if you squint in the background, Richard Griffiths & Frances de la Tour (Uncle Vernon & Madam Maxine!) are two business owners at the station making the moves on each other.

I'd like to place the whole soundtrack here but of particular highlight is The Clocks. A majority of the leitmotifs for the film are found in this tack. A thought provoking piano theme for the sense of mystery, and that cozy French accordion sound. All those background elements are established from Hugo keeping the central clock of the station operational and observing the world move around him, befitting Philo's analytical mind to think of mechanics or puzzles.
Romanticism; Two Words (singles) | Retrofile
According to spotify, the twin Canadian brothers who form the band have the modern day equivalent of an 80s sound on lock. They crept onto a work playlist of 80s hits we have in the escape room, where I would constantly pause my resets to go look up what song came on. They've become a surprise recent favorite to beef out some playlists, especially Philo's scant options (seeing as I don't include the whole Prof Layton franchise).

Romanticism and Two Words bookend Philo's attempts at dating. A face read of the band's name also fits is retro interests in muggle technology; and due to Falkin family naming conventions I constantly misspell the group as 'Retrophile' given the sound of Philo's name. His character has always been one trying to balance his attraction to overweight females, although I downplayed this when he was younger. Mainly his crush on Drea and precocious looks to various full figured professors. It's not a major twist of his sexuality (he's heterosexual) but it bleeds into questions of attraction alongside body positivity and Philo, at his worst, falling into the trap of fetishizing this attraction. This has nothing to do with the songs, of course, just the lens of Philo I view them with. 'Romanticism' is his earnest attempts at getting into the dating scene, while 'Two Words' has him reeling, 'bending backwards' if you will, trying to make up from a major blunder.
Library Enter (HP CoS Game Soundtrack) | Jeremy Soule
YouTube Only

I have several studious characters, like Ligeia or Ursula, but for identifying with the video game soundtrack Philo best fits with the library ambiance. This is the main wing of the library you visit past the study desks in the annex, which you'll constantly return to for secrets after accessing new spells to bypass barriers. And because this is a video game, a giant cauldron of wiggenweld potion and jars of Bertie Botts beans and chocolate frogs abound. Regardless, Philo has spent plenty of time in the school library, fitting his scholarly character.

Casey/Hexy & Dinghee

YouTube
Spotify
Explicit: 1

Mr. Pitiful (Unfamiliar Faces) | Matt Costa
Casey's richness and complexity as a character .  Though he often seems intent on building a wall around himself and being as awful as humanly possible to his classmates, there are still those -- like Alvis -- who are willing to extend the hand of friendship.  --Sparky

This is the best representation of Alvis and Casey's platonic life partnership I could ever ask for. Alvis would make the most sense as the vocal PoV in the song. It's playful but somewhat sour, calling out a genuine offer of friendship to someone who has become so wrapped up in constructing barriers. Bonus points for 'Pitful' being Casey's most despised emotion to receive from others.
Louder Than Ever (Mine Is Yours) | Cold War Kids
Hexy is Casey's repressed inner opposite -- not just female to his male, but bold and carefree to his cautiousness and restraint.  As she begins to assert herself more actively, she has been throwing herself into the world headfirst and forcing both halves of her personality to listen to what she has to say. --Sparky

Uncovering Sparky’s playlist after all these years, this has become my new favorite track. The tone is exactly what I’ve been trying to chase down for Casey/Hexy stories. Because they’ve always been the same person. “Hexy” is just the tipping point of being fed up being passed, screaming “Enough!” at everyone who has been constraining them into a certain way of being. Casey’s distinction of having this other self is just as much a constructed facade as the public mask of each persona. I’ve set up quite the challenge for myself within how much of a mess Casey looks on paper; being intersex, genderqueer, possibly multiple, yet eschewing lifelines like LGBTIA resources because skating by with Occlumency talent is enough. Or so goes the misguided character motivation. With a creative interpretation of the lyrics “I can’t see you but we’re still together” rings true for someone constantly reinventing themselves in subtle ways to defy expectation.
Come Back Home; Eat That Up, Its Good For You (Tourist History) | Two Door Cinema Club
Dingy is totally devoted to the care of his Master Casey -- looking out for him, making sure he has what he needs, honoring his odd requests and indulging his eccentricities.  But sometimes there seems to be a hint underneath the urgency of it all that Dingy wishes that his Master would recognize what was best for him, rather than simply doing what he wants. --Sparky

Now Sparky's write-up was for Come Back Home, but when I looked up the link it actually led me to Eat That Up, Its Good For You. Both from Two Door Cinema Club feature elements that represent Dinghee's relationship with Casey when serving as steward. And the subtle complications in the music also reflect the complexity of their relationship beyond master/slave when Dinghee becomes Casey's confidant for both gender expression and illicit activities. As a music video, Come Back Home is also wild for its Roshomon style multiple viewpoints, which requires a few watches to figure out which version of events is the most true.
Faded (Perfect Day) CASCADA
Rounding out the trio of Sparky's recommendations, Faded is a song I've highlight a long time ago with significance to Casey. CASCADA has been a favorite find when I was looking for trance/club style music before writing Casey's first major appearance as Hexy at a Spellpunk event. Funnily enough, we're going to see a lot of CASCADA in Anadotti's playlist.

But as to Faded, there's a poignant mood to the lyrics about someone being made into something they're not. For Casey's story, reflective of his difficult background to be a 'him' when family pressured Casey into a male successor. It robbed Casey of both a childhood and a girlhood, worse still being unable to approach being intersex as a girl on her own terms, when grooming this male identity.
Vs. Wolf; Vs. Pete (Magical Tetris Challenge OST) | Masato Kouda
YouTube Only for both; Fan Cover for 'Vs. Wolf' on Spotify

As mentioned in Obderedria's playlist, the soundtrack for this Disney branded Tetris game didn't need to go so hard. And the highlights of the soundtrack goes to Wolf's theme and Pete's theme, which you face in succession towards the end of the story mode. Pete's other minion, Weasel, doesn't have his own theme as he acts as an opponent for your choice to protagonist to fight on their home stage.

For these funk, synth heavy beats I likening each to one of two moods for C/H after hours. Wolf's theme is wild, bombastic, devilishly delightful sphere for nights of clubbing. Pete's theme is shadowy, mysterious and sinister, for the nights of getting up to no good via a vigilante alias.
Aria of the Soul (Persona 4 OST); Beneath the Mask (Persona 5 OST) | Shoji Meguro
Soon after I started writing Casey, Gemini (writer of Alvis Norling) recommended I look up Persona 4. I first thought this indicated the tomyboish Chie Satonaka, or the possibly queer Kanji Tatsumi. Then once the plot introduced Naoto Shirogane (spoilers for a decades old game) the recommendation made a lot of sense. Setting aside the complicated analysis of Western vs Eastern interpretations of LGBTQ characters in ATLUS games (being based in Japan), the Persona series became our favorite franchise after Harry Potter to talk about. As mentioned in Harlan's character origin, he was developed for a Persona fusion-fic we were writing using our combined AO casts. Hence my continued assigning major tarot arcana to the stories of my characters.

Casey is not only the Hanged Man but could be the 'wildcard' of a Persona game. So named for people able to access multiple Personas, usually the player character for the sake of game mechanics. Which in series take the appearance of mental bond entities based off of mythology that represent a character's inner self. Aria of the Soul is legacy theme of the Velvet Room, where the mysterious Igor provides services to fuse an enhance various Personas. It's highly sophisticated and cerebral. 'Beneath the Mask' is the tranquil evening theme of Persona 5, in contrast to the moody catharsis of the main plot being based on liberation, such as the protagonist falsely being caused of a crime. As the color scheme of the game is red. The lyrics define the 'shapeshifter at Poe's masquerade' but asking not to take off the mask. Much like Casey rarely lets others in past public facades.
In My Mind (Axwell Radio Edit) | Ivan Gough & Feenispawl ft. Georgi Kay
Thank (or rather blame) a series of Kia Soul commercials with those rave hamsters for introducing me to this song. It got so stuck in my mind it became the soundtrack to Hexy's "battle club" in the landmark thread where Zoe Torret discovers Hexy training in the Room of Requirement. It also represents how music and dance has become a touchstone for this persona compared to Casey's tightly wound self, the song continuously building and emboldening with its theme.
You're Gonna Go Far, Kid (Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace) | The Offspring
Explicit

The lyrics kick off with "Show me how to lie, you're getting better all the time" and "With a thousand lies and good disguise" I don't think I need to say anymore, for why this song fits C/H. More of The Offspring will feature in Anadotti's playlist. Despite having high class origins this is the street level aspiration for playing the part of a social manipulator for the sake of protecting Darla and schemes to counter the O'Doherty criminal enterprises.
Deception (Frozen Embers) | The Crüxshadows
Looking up more of their music after Sparky's suggestion for Beverly, Deception was discovered from a YouTube recommendation. Also, it's one of the pieces featured in the Vampire: the Masquarade Bloodlines video game. I only go so far with vampire media myself, although I'll explore related themes in other characters like Casey or Ligeia. "Pray for an end to our deception" hits hard for the moment Casey/Hexy finally puts an end to various deceptions. Not just being openly bi-gender but also the vigilante motivations.
Safe And Sound (Capital Cities) | Capital Cities
Capital Cities was a group I found around the same time as Chromeo, who will be featured in Ligeia's playlist. For the most part I consider CC to be more optimistic in tone. It's such optimism that has kept Dinghee loyal to Casey and Darla has his family suffers exploitation under the rest of the O'Dohertys. Dinghee was tasked with being nurse elf to Casey. Who will do anything to keep things 'Safe and Sound' despite C/H continuously thrusting themselves into dangerous and unusual situations. And, naturally for house elves, "take you where you want to be" even if "in a hurricane of frowns." Because of how easy it was getting for elf assistance in Casey's school-time stories, I wanted to lessen Dinghee's involvement to the point that now, post enslavement, there's barriers that prevent them from reuniting.
Darkness (Choco no Dorei) | SKE48
YouTube Only

The accompanying song to SKE48's 11th single release, known for its 'Seven Dancers' format for the music video and concert performances. Even before I looked up fan translations of the lyrics the mood spoke to me. "Love is Darkness" is this stylish but tragic piece looking at a former breakup. Or in Casey's case, being on the precipice of eschewing the heartbreak from any warmth of love to remain in a familiar darkness. To use literal translations of some of the prose, this messages hit hard. "It's nothing but a delusion of mine / Loving / And being loved..." during the bridge, and "I'll disappear / I'll go beyond this sadness / Where my memories are just fragments / Stars that can't shine" during the chorus.
Someone New (Hozier) | Hozier
A song from the debut neo-folk album for Hozier, introduced to me by newer members of AO since my return. Another Irish singer to go with the bandmates of Two Door Cinema Club to reflect Casey's nationality. It's also a cross-cultural counterpart for all that analysis I did of SKE48's Darkness. Despite the incredible efforts built up for the facades of Casey and Hexy, they can't help but "fall in love just a little oh little bit" with others. Such as a spot of normalcy from observing the likes of her flatmate Sophie Anderson dating Gregory King. Much as EmBug, Chocobo and I are priming things to erupt like a powder keg.
Miles Edgeworth~Objection! 2009 (Gyakuten Kenji OST) | Noriyuki Iwadare
Fan Cover on Spotify

The Ace Attorney series has such a wide range of music that I don't place all of it with any single of my characters (like how Philo really gels with the Professor Layton franchise). Looking at the core series, Miles Edgeworth has been a favorite for seeing his character development, which is why a few elements of Casey's masc persona and plot borrow from Edgeworth's redemption. Once a school mate of protagonist Phoenix Wright, part of his motivations to become a defense attorney is to confront Miles about having become a 'wicked prosecutor.' Edgeworth becomes various kinds of antagonist over the series, to the point of 'only' being Phoenix's rival in the sake of how they both seek the truth from opposite sides of the courtroom. This piece is from his time as protagonist in the Investigations duology, receiving a remaster for Switch as the sequel never got a western release. It's this remastered arrangement on the YouTube playlist. It takes Edgeworth's theme from the second franchise game, Justice For All, making the pomp all the more energized.
Girls of Rock N' Roll (The Malibu Bikini Shop OST) | performed by Carter Robertson, Tami Holbrook, Jacie Berry and Penny Summers
YouTube Only

Chances are, if you're of my generation (late 1980s/90s) you're more likely familiar with The Chipmunk Adventure animated film cover of this piece, which does a whole 'girls vs boys' thing with the Chipettes & the Chipmunks. I've spared your ears for the original version of this Cali styled song from a forgettable 80s flick. Both of which sound like completely dissonant suggestions to everything I've been establishing about Casey thus far. The UK and California coasts are very different for starts, as Casey is a notoriously bad swimmer.

Rather, I liken this and the next song (Stand Out) from C/H's lesser seen childish side. A hint from lost innocence given the way Casey was forced to grow up. If it wasn't for the coerced identity "Hexy" would be the dominant persona, much more openly mischievous and catty, and maybe not even giving two figs about 'not being like other girls' if allowed to mature in a healthier environment. Regardless, this comes around to being an aspirational song.
Stand Out (A Goofy Movie OST) | Tevin Campbell
Now, while I've always been a fan of the Goof Troop animated series I only owned the film's sequel, An Extremely Goofy Movie. So when I saw the original for the first time last year, I didn't even suspect it had songs in traditional Disney fashion. Both films are often critically underrated, as they appeal to audiences well beyond the target kid demographic for those that grew up with the film.

Getting us to the first of two songs from Tevin Campbell's 'character' in the film, superstar Powerline, with "I 2 I" featuring at the climax. A performer Max is hoping to emulate to not be seen as much as a Goof as his dad (sorry, that's also your last name!). To "Stand Out" again sounds completely dissonant to a character valuing secrets and multiple identities. Yet this is precisely the role 'Hexy' served as the narration changed. Much like what Sparky touched upon for 'Louder Than Ever,' a shift from repressing the truths about the self to boldly asserting the way the character wants to be perceived. It's a not yet realized distinction, given all of C/H's baggage, but a notion I'm striving towards as a writer.
You'll Be In My Heart (Disney's Tarzan OST) | Phil Collins
Phil Collins pulled out all the stops for this soundtrack, the film often underrated as Disney moved through the decades. I became a fan of his career when looking up his other songs, solo or as a member of Genesis, plus his cameo as a police inspector in the film Hook. When I was in high school, my school band was selected to play at Epcot during a series of music festivals. A lost highlight was a recording we did of "Trashing the Camp" from Tarzan in at a Disney World studio rehearsal. Although I kept the specialty shirt and pin.

As per the original inception of Casey & Dinghee as characters, I truly wanted to the explore the dynamics of the Malfoy's and Dobby in a different way. What would make an elf personally loyal to a master in a system rife for abuse? What made Casey so antagonist to peers early in school, while not taking full stock of pureblood supremacy? Answer; the elf caretaker who has being Casey's companion for the majority of both their lives, yet aren't that different from enduring various kinds of abuse when confiding in each other and trying to make major changes to the dynamic. Very few of Dinghee's appearances in the student era were independent of Casey, which is now different in the modern calendar. Dinghee very much shares the PoV for this song as Kala would have towards baby Tarzan, even though they don't share a species. For both Casey and Dinghee, there's an important place left in each other's heart for the other, even for all the complications of the master/servant arrangement.
Poster Child (single); Lost in Sound (Lost in Sound) | Retrofile
Looking further into Retrofile when picking songs for Philo led to a surprise swing into Casey's playlist. But then, Casey recruiting Philo to Phaëthon Artifice was also a surprise, another innovator to fit with Alvis Norling's legacy as a reference character in honor of my friend Gemini.

If I was writing Casey's big gender euphoric sequence today, getting 'lost in character' as Hexy infiltrating a nightclub, "Lost in Sound" would the choice of music. It's a recent release for Retrofile off the same named EP released post-pandemic. Music is used for C/H not only for workouts and spell drills but also to bridge into different life experiences. As per the chorus: "Sometimes I catch the groove and let it take me away / Where am I going? / It's better when I don′t know" In contrast, the earlier release "Poster Child" highlights the bevy of problems C/H has tried to break free of, perhaps represented as a mental (Occlumens) wall of posters about various things to be. Again to the chorus: "We're all working harder / Waiting for a good chance / To get a little distance, Farther / Waiting for a good chance to be another victim / Or Martyr / Saying anything to get me out of here" This song was another ear worm when Retrofile crops up on the escape room playlists, so tracking it down was very satisfying.
DADA Cautious (HP CoS Game Soundtrack) | Jeremy Soule
YouTube Only

Defense was Casey's best subject. For the Chamber of Secrets game, Defense is also the first spot that game goes full 'dungeonmania' like it wants to be Legend of Zelda or Castlevania. Extended chambers of obstacles, like the protections for the Philospher's Stone taken to the nth degree, are fun to speculate for just how many secrets Hogwarts is holding. (or elsewhere, these days if you played Hogwarts Legacy) It's tense and makes dramatic use of oboe, as Casey's school-time schemes met the same mold of sneaking around.

Ligeia
YouTube
Spotify
Explicit: 0

I Saw the Dead (Becoming a Jackal) | Villagers
Ligeia sees the world in ways that others do not -- she is not so much obsessed with the macabre as she is simply immersed in it.  But even though others rarely appreciate her love for the dreary and depressing, that hardly stops her from finding ways to share it. --Sparky

Ligeia is the hardest character to get music right for, yet Sparky got it right on the nose. Sure, gothic and baroque genres seem a shoe-in, but it's also a disservice to just label Ligeia as 'creepy all the time witch.' She's not a dark witch so much as a dark romantic. The harrowing tale presented in the lyrics has moments of both the singer being unafraid of the dead, yet not always impervious to others' ridicule. Every once in awhile Ligeia has her own moments where her immunity to other people's opinions gives out. But she'll still invite others to take a peek at what she finds beautiful.
Don't Turn the Lights On (Business Casual) | Chromeo
Dark electronica with a delightfully uncanny music video. With the interplay of fading to black with only the singers eyes and mouth being lit up makes for a lot of fun cuts in the editing. I liken Chromeo to Capitol Cities (as see in Dinghee's part of the C/H playlist) only Chromeo has more moody, sometimes unnerving lyrics in my opinion. There's a reflection of Ligeia's ideological solitude but the words "tonight I want to see you in the dark" has some double meaning in her case. Both for her albinism impacting her vision, as Ligeia is rather photosensitive, but also seeing what someone is really like at night or their darkest moments.
Opening & Closing Themes (Cluedo Series OST) | Richard G. Mitchell
YouTube Only

Over the Covid-19 pandemic I furthered my interest into British televisions shows like Taskmaster and the 90s series Cluedo game show. This was the inspiration behind the planned murder mystery game for Ligeia's Class Reunion plot although we never got to the second thread. I might turn the experience into a forum game sometime. Regardless, for lovers of mystery or campy television the series saw a rotating cast each production. The composer of all the show's music, Richard G. Mitchell, has some fantastic stingers for the mysterious atmosphere. I would link more but I like the hauntingly jazzy title riffs the best.
The Tango (Addams Family Values OST) | Marc Shaiman
YouTube Only

A few of Ligeia's standout inspirations come from the Addams Family, like Morticia and Wednesday. When we first got cable as a kid I would watch all the old Addams Family shows along with its spiritual sister series, The Munsters. This scene in 90s sequel film highlights the best of Raul Julia's and Angelica Houston's performance of Gomez and Morticia. Ligeia isn't quite as compelling with her dance partners but you can bet anybody she'd want to marry would have to find a way to keep up with her spirited passions.
Ghostly Galaxy (Super Mario Galaxy OST) | Mahito Yokota
Fan Cover on Spotify

This seminal theme from Mario's astral adventure ended up getting referenced by many games that came after it in the ghost house environments. It's also known as 'Teresa Waltz' or 'Waltz of the Boos' based on the Japanese name of the ghostly enemies. Its suitably galactic and ties Ligeia's mystique to her night leaning interests like Astronomy.
Shovel Knight series (Yacht Club Games); The Danse Macabre~Lichyard, Requiem for Shield Knight, Flowers of Antimony~The Explodatorium | Jake Kaufman & Manami Matsumae (original composers); arrangements by Jayson Napolitano & Evelyn Lark (The Noble Demon)
Original Versions on Spotify

Chiptunes for Ligeia? You'd think with the enigmatic thematic characters of Shovel Knight, itself an homage to games like Mega Man (one of the series composers Manami was invited to work on the series) I'd start splitting up tracks over my characters. Yet Ligeia takes a surprise sweep with identifying with some of the haunting, moody and surprisingly fitting hits. I started following playthroughs of the game's original release during hospital visits for another family member during that time and the should soundtrack is very engaging. Evelyn Lark/The Noble Demon did everything I hoped to hear with an arrangement of Specter Knight's level, Lich Yard, on par with the arrangements Kaufman did of Manami's phenomenal piece for Plague Knight with "The Science Wizard" for The Explodatorium and Jayson's "A Knight's Darkest Hour" for Requiem of Shield Knight. The latter is the emotional core of Shovel Knight's quest to avenge his adventuring partner Shield Knight, played during the game's interludes. Arranging series wide music for the narrative is also present with the expansions of the game, as Plague Knight and Specter Knight have their own campaigns with very different play styles. Plague Knight is far more unhinged with his chemical vagrancy than Ligeia, although she'd appreciate the enthusiasm for continuing past failed attempts in the laboratory. Specter Knight is so fittingly haunting and I'd argue his is the most dramatic and brooding of the two prequel narratives following him and King Knight.
Skurge Explore (HP CoS Game Soundtrack) | Jeremy Soule
YouTube Only

So maybe Ligeia's set is predominantly video game music at this point. I don't mind. The exploration to find the Skurge spellbook is kind of wild, as most levels are better telegraphed by story beats or cutscenes, like challenge chambers connected to the classrooms. First, you have sneak past Prefects patrolling the side annex to the library, then contentiously climb through the Restricted Section, which is a space much bigger than the regular section of the library. Ghosts also make the most frequent obstacles, as fitting this ethereal track and Ligeia's interests. It's roughly midway through the game's story so it was always a memorable sequence, when I had Ligeia reference the spell.

Anadotti
YouTube
Spotify
Explicit: 3

Dotty actually has the oldest defined playlist of anybody on my cast, going back to when I was initially creating her. Which is nearly everything after Sparky's recommendation. And somehow she’s the only one to have both YouTube and Spotify versions be exact matches.
A Better Son/Daughter (The Execution of All Things) | Rilo Kiley
Explicit

Anadotti is a confused, spontaneous, merry-go-round whirl of a mess.  Years of life as a small tree-dwelling rodent have left her unable to hold on to much for very long -- except when she's on, she's on. --Sparky

I either had this conversation with Sparky shortly after receiving the original set-list, or have totally imagined it, but I thought I was gushing about this really fits the morning after for Dotty. Like coming down from a major high, the song starts simple and quietly, while there's an intensity building throughout the whole piece. Until its just a loud mess, capping off with the one thing Dotty seemingly can't do (which is swear properly)
Fever (Evacuate the Dance Floor); Pyromania; Night Nurse (Original Me) | CASCADA
Besides 'Faded' mentioned in C/H's playlist, my other favorite Cascada hits sit thoroughly in the Dotty camp. Eurodance and glamor seem a direct contrast to Dotty's grungy aesthetic. Yet a face value reading of the lyrics highlight Dotty's brazen, self centered attitude to what she wants out of life.

'Fever' & 'Pyromania' are her open invitation to call her crazy. You either jump on board to her brand of chaos or get burned. 'Night Nurse' is the most out there in instrumentation. Most tellingly is the central line "I don't wanna be your lover, oh no / But I could be your remedy, your cure" for her very casual approach to hook ups and benders.
Self-Esteem (Smash); The Kids Aren't Alright (Americana) | The Offspring
The Offspring serves as the counterpoint to the Cascada selections in Dotty’s playlist. In some ways she’s a 90s grunge reject stuck in the wrong decade, with these two songs the highlights of the bands third and fifth studio album, respectively. In this context Self-Esteem would be the PoV of some poor chap Dotty is bowling over by sheer force of personality. The Kids Ain’t Alright could attribute to the kind of childhood she had growing up outside of Las Vegas. She could have made something of herself being a witch, but it all went to pot mainly by her own actions.

Bonus points for the time I used “Hey, hey, hey, Come Out And Play” as a thread title.
Flagpole Sitta (Where Have All the Merrymakers Gone?) | Harvey Danger
Harvey Danger ended up an inadvertent one hit wonder, thanks to an early appraisal from Rolling Stone Magazine and every radio DJ who liked the song upon release over-saturating its station presence. So much so it’s hard to see the original counter cultural perspective behind the lyrics. The front man reports to coming up with the chorus right before their first performance and regretting he didn’t use it as the actual song title. That being “I’m not sick but I’m not well”. The continuation of “a sin to live this well” and “I’m so hot cause I’m in hell” very much fit with Dotty, also with one of the verses having “paranoia, paranoia, everybody’s coming to get me.”
Can't Feel My Face (Beauty Behind the Madness) | The Weeknd
Is this really a love song for The Weeknd's first pop hit? Well, it's one that personifies a drug addiction. You don't have to look that hard into the lyrics, either, or the music video where a guy flings his lighter at the singer onstage and he starts dancing in flames. Now, Dotty's drug binges were attributed to 'fantastic elements' such as billywig stings, MUSE or what have you, although realistically she's familiar with actual drugs.
Makes Me Wonder (It Won't Be Soon Before Long) | Maroon 5
Explicit

To immediately date myself, I was nearing the end of my high school education during the original release of the band's second album. It's a song that's always stuck with me; rather than the pending breakup of the song, I'd play it a bunch during a time in college where I didn't really know what I was going with my attempted science degree. Dotty's loyalty is a fickle one as a potential sycophant or underling (even if she thinks she should be in charge) so Maroon 5 isn't that far from the spectrum of her playlist. The song carries a feeling of abandonment. I almost included "Animals" but that's a lot more predatory than Dotty's main motif as a prey species animagus.
Hangover (TY.O) | Taio Cruz
Explicit

"I've been drinking too much for sure." Really, no further analysis is needed for Dotty's M.O. I liked listening to seveal of Taio's songs and this one pointed to Dotty the most. Comedian Bobby Lee also plays the valet in the music video, before his television career iirc, fitting Dotty's loser archetype. Funnily enough Taio is British but the song features American rapper Flo Rida, to bookend the two areas where Dotty has had her crime sprees.
Lump | The Presidents of the United States of America
An alt rock band song about an unhinged woman in a swamp? From their same titled album? Maybe I should have had Dotty grow up in Seattle given the number of bands from that area I feature on her playlist. Composer and lead singer Chris Ballew himself had a benign tumor in his head, giving the word 'lump' when describing a vision of a woman in a swamp. The first time I ever heard of this song was Weird Al's parody for Forest Gump which manages to both cram matching choreography and a cliffnotes version of the film into the span of the band's original brief music video.
Addicted to Love (Riptide) | Robert Palmer
Looking into my archived posts, I’ve truly had half of Dotty’s playlist on lock when I added a post to a former OOC thread in 2011. It has Cascada, The Offspring, Harvey Danger & Maroon 5. And shortly after that post I’d discover Taio Cruz. Robert Palmer has been forgotten in the context of Dotty’s playlist. He’s usually a “Sissel” artist for me; for those of you newer who are wondering who my former temporal investigator turned History prof is. “Love” probably isn’t the opportune word for what Dotty’s been addicted to over the years. But I’m adding it back, post updates for Dotty. It fits the eras of rock on her list but also, ironically, represents her attempts to stay sober for longer. Whether cleaned up or dressed nice all those symptoms of her withdrawal still remain. Plus, if you’ve seen the music video this started a series of Robert Palmer being backed up by models made to look like “unobtainable” mannequins. Which has an unnerving quality; very outside of AO I once used this aspect during an arc in a Chronicles of Darkness RPG campaign using the “Promethean: the Created” rules for a constructed woman named for “Simply Irresistible.”
Bad Reputation; Do You Want to Touch Me (Bad Reputation) | Joan Jett & The Blackhearts
In terms of vibes, if Dotty hadn’t flown off the handle as much as she did following her crimes (and had any music talents to speak of) she might have been as much a rocker as Joan Jett. Dotty sure has the bravado down. As a big fan of the 80s music scene Joan Jett has been a lifelong favorite. So not having the iconic “Godmother of punk” on the playlist of my squirrel brained miscreant has been an oversight!

After her time with The Runaways Joan started a new band. Originally both songs were on her debut album as a solo artist, Joan Jett, until it was reissued a year later in 1981 as Bad Reputation. The titles alone lend easily to Dotty’s bad girl image before looking further into the lyrics. And pairing these two leads to an interesting echo: a repeated “No no no/not me me me” from Bad Reputation; and “Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah” from Do You Want to Touch Me.
