NOTE: As a result of a plot discussion Absit Omen has deviated from canon to avoid harmful stereotypes of Jewish people. We are more or less starting from scratch. This page is a work in progress. The previous version can be referenced in the History tab.

Appearance

Goblins are a species of sentient magical beings and live all over the world. They are typically under 4ft tall with long pointed hears and long fingers. Their skin tone ranges from pale tan to olive, brown to grey.

Magic & Craftsmanship

Goblin magic is more to do with enchantment and the manipulation of materials, than with spell casting. They are most known for their magical devices as well as their alchemy.

Goblin-crafted goods are rare in the wix world as Goblins do not enjoying dealing with wix. Their rules of ownership also differ from human rules, as a Goblin-crafted good is typically loaned out when bought - ownership reverts to its crafter when the purchaser passes on.

Notable goblin magic includes the Goblet of Fire and the Sword of Gryffindor.

Goblin Culture

European Goblins speak several languages in the Gobbledegook family. Goblins are raised in large extended families and clans and rarely marry humans. Clans tend to specialise in a particular craft, each harboring their own craft or trade secrets.

Goblin culture emphasizes a well-rounded education including more muggle-like engineering and mathematics. Wix have benefited over the centuries from goblin artefacts and magical devices.

Although there are exceptions, Goblins tend to live in a closed culture, and resent outside interference. They are more welcoming of non-human Beings than of humans. The Hag Market is an underground non-human space well known to Goblins.

Goblin Law

The Ministry of Magic has and continues to oppress goblins. Goblin affairs are managed by the Goblin Office of the Being Division in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. They are subject to the Statute of Secrecy and are all but entirely prohibited from operating in the Muggle World.

Gringotts Wizarding Bank is one of the few Goblin institutions in Britain that works in collaboration with the Ministry. The bank operates under Goblin law.

Wherever possible, Goblins prefer to resolve their issues among themselves and without getting the Ministry involved. They have their own laws and customs by which they abide.

Goblin Media

  • The Bletherskate is one of the more widely circulated Gobbledegook newspapers
