Ian is in many ways an enigma. Outside of Quidditch (or sports in general) he is reserved and keeps to himself. But on the field, he's an entirely different person. He is aggressive, passionate and quite lively. Quidditch is Ian's life. He truly plays for the love of the game and everything else (money, fame, etc) is purely secondary.
History
Ian was born the only son of two athletic parents, one Muggle and one Magical. His father, Dario Cuddyer, was a retired ice hockey player turned coach from Canada and his mother, Sophie Hanover, comes from a family with a strong connection to the sport of Quidditch. Sophie and her sister, Isolee, are both retired Quidditch players from France, who made a fiercely dynamic pair of chasers. Ian's maternal grandfather was also a notable player in his youth.
Dario and Sophie met and married in Toronto, Ontario (Canada) and shortly afterwards, Ian was born. They lived in Canada for his early childhood, but eventually the family moved back to France so that Ian could become closer with the Hanovers, as Dario's own family was no longer living. Growing up, Ian was active in both ice hockey and quidditch, taking on the positions of goaltender and keeper respectively (roles he often felt were interchangeable). Given his family's ties to Quidditch, they were regular attendees to many high profile matches over the years.
Because Ian enjoyed both sides of his heritage, it was difficult for him to decide if he was going to pursue traditional Muggle schooling or accept his invitation to attend Beauxbatons. Part of him felt that his choice would mean he was favoring one parent over the other. Eventually, he did decide for the Magical schooling, and thus he eventually moved away from hockey and into full quidditch mode.
Cuddyer entered Beauxbatons in the fall of 1997 and tried out for the school team as a first year, and though he did make the squad (some believe due in part to his mother's fame as a professional Quidditch player), he did not see much playing time until towards the end of his second year. In his third year, with the departure of many upperclassmen, he took over as the team's Keeper. He would go on to assume many school records pertaining to that position.
Following his completion of school at Beauxbatons, Cuddyer was not initially drafted (offered a contract) for play by any European teams. But since he had dual citizenship (French and Canadian), he was approached to play for the Canadian National Team in a series of friendly international matches serving as a tune up for the Quidditch World Cup.
Cuddyer was recruited with the intent of being a back up Keeper, as the team was led by a dependable and popular veteran. Unfortunately, an injury required that Ian step up into the starting role, something that he was reluctant to do at first given his predecessor's far reaching shadow and the fact that he was a newcomer to the team (and seen by many as an outsider). It didn't take long for him to endear himself, however, and the Canadians had a successful run in both the tune up matches and the World Cup itself.
As a direct result of his performance on the Canadian National Team (and also due to the vacancy left by the same injury), Ian was offered a four year contract by the Stonewall Stormers. In 2005, he was named Rookie of the Year. In 2006 and 2007, the Stormers won the Canadian Quidditch League Title and Ian was named League MVP in 2007. From 2006 to 2008, he was named to the All Star Team.
Ian also continued his play on the Canadian National Team, including the 2006 Quidditch World Cup.
With his contract with the Stormers ending following the 2008 season, Ian returned to Europe in search of a new team to play for. The Tutshill Tornados expressed interest and after a successful tryout was offered a spot on the team.
In the spring of 2009, Ian was traded to the Montrose Magpies to finish out the season.
