Beauxbatons Academy
Beauxbatons Academy of Magic is a magical school located in Cannes, France. It is considered the top magical education facility in the region and is known throughout Europe for its high standards of performance.
Classes are conducted in French. Most students come from southern France, but Beauxbatons takes applicants from all over Europe and the French-speaking world. In the past, students from Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Italy, Spain, Quebec, the French Caribbean, the French West Indies, French-speaking Africa, and elsewhere have all been accepted to the school, provided they are fluent in la langue française.
Beauxbatons professors strive to produce creative free-thinking witches and wizards. School culture emphasizes independent achievement and debate, and the Academy is known for producing some of the best magical scholars, artists, and creative types.
Academics
Admittance to Beauxbatons is highly selective, and potential students must pass an entrance exam before being accepted. Like at Hogwarts, schooling starts at age 11.
Beauxbatons is divided into two "schools": a collège (ages 11-14) and a lycée (ages 15-18). Students are not sorted into houses, but are assigned to dorms by age and gender.
The Collège focuses more on general education. Classes tend to be very large and standardized; they are often split by gender. There is a great emphasis on charms and wandwork, as compared to other more "brute" magics. Along with the typical Hogwarts subjects, Beauxbatons students also study the arts. Music, dance, poetry, wizarding literature, and languages are all offered classes. Etiquette courses are required for collège students as well.
At the end of their fourth year, all collège students sit examinations which allows them to choose their area of focus during their studies at the Lycée.
When students graduate to the Lycée, they receive more of an intimate education. Classes are mixed-gender and tend to be very small, often being run as more conservatory-style recitations by the professors. Politics and debating are emphasized, and lycée students tend to be very aware of current events. They are also given much more personal freedom; older students move from the dormitories into private rooms, organized into small apartments, and they tend to greatly relish this newfound privacy.
Professors
Beauxbatons Academy is known for the superb quality of its staff. It hires only professors with sterling reputations, and a rigid system of discipline is enforced at the school.
Professors at Beauxbatons might be more general or specialize in one or two subjects. As well as magical subjects, the school also employs teachers who work in subjects like music, dancing, languages, and etiquette. Courses in constructing magical tools (like wands or enchanted objects) is offered for older students.
Professors are addressed as Madame (Mme), Mademoiselle (Mlle) or Monsieur (M) followed by their surname to be specific.
Course of Study
After sitting examinations in their fourth year, Beauxbatons students choose their course of study for their final three years. As well as the typical magical subjects, more creative options like the arts, dance, rhetoric, music, and crafting magical objects are also offered as specialties.
School Culture
Beauxbatons students are known for being refined and well-mannered. They tend to be more upper class (as Beauxbatons is an elite academy), and they may come across as elitist to outsiders. Image is very important to them, and their classes emphasize debate and public speaking, so they tend to be very well spoken.
Though Beauxbatons does not discriminate against Muggle-born students, the school is not openly encouraging of Muggle culture. Mixed breed students are allowed, but such heritage tends to be kept quiet.
For the most part, Beauxbatons students follow a strict code of behavior. Bullying is strictly forbidden, and a dress code is enforced at all times. They think very highly of their school and its reputation, though they tend to rank individual achievement over winning as a team. Though they may come across as elitist or snobby, they are also eager to learn and to express their individuality.
