Eta is youngest daughter of Octavius Pepper and Catherine Pepper, with sisters Theta Pepper and Zeta Pepper ahead of her. She was in Hufflepuff house at Hogwarts, and now is part of Artemis Coven in Slandermouth.

Appearance

Eta has brilliantly red hair, which she has inherited from her mother. She refuses to cut it and wants to grow it as long as possible. It loosely waves when it dries naturally. She plaits it in increasingly elaborate ways as she gets older. Sometimes she is found to be hiding her wand in there.

She would describe her face as rather plain, with serious, dark eyebrows and small mouth. When she smiles she has dimples in her cheeks. Her giggle is very bubbly and girlish. In the summer, Eta's freckles are much more visible in the sunshine. She has a love-hate relationship with them, unsure whether she likes them or not.

Eta has green-blue eyes which she feels are one of her better features. She has pierced ears and likes to wear earrings. She has a growing collection.

Eta has soft hands and well-kept nails. She always moisturises before bed but never before touching her tarot cards, as sticky fingers on her cards is a sin.

When it comes to clothing, Eta likes layers, and knitwear. She brought quite a number of cardigans and jumpers to Hogwarts, some hand knitted by more senior Pepper family members. She likes autumnal colours.

Personality

Eta grew up incredibly superstitious. She was found stalking the family to let them know of bad omens and has always tried to advise them of their decisions as such.

She was a complete dreamer as a child, but now lives by her tarot deck after making a chance accurate prediction which she believes was a premonition that a terrible accident was to occur in the family. (It was, sadly, her aunt's accident which ended her up in St Mungo's, from where she never emerged.)

Her father has tried more than once to explain that there are no seers in the family to his knowledge, so it would be unlikely she would have the gift of sight. Undeterred, she still carries her tarot deck everywhere, hoping to reveal her inner eye.

Eta's Life Path number is 1. This predicts that she is independent, self-motivated and hard working (true), but that she has a strong desire to be 'number 1' (not so true). She has a good memory for birthdays and such due to her interest in divination. The life path number is not overly exact for Eta at this point in her life, but the suggestion that she finds it difficult to forgive and forget when wronged is somewhat true. Given her boggart is Professor Storm (after trying to execute Francis the frog, who belongs to cousin Linus) and she is boycotting Zonko's joke shop amongst a growing list of other things.

According to Lo Shu, Eta finds it difficult to express her thoughts and feelings verball. She is sensitive and frequently misunderstood. She finds it hard to relax, but is extremely confident. She is likely to learn through losses of love, possessions or health. As she learns from these experiences she will become more and more interested in spiritual topics. She is idealistic and intelligent, but can be a bit condescending if you don't follow her line of thought.

At times, she can lack sensitivity and intuition, and can make mistakes by ignoring her conscience. She can be impatient and can try to justify her mistakes or blame others for them. When under stress, Eta can be spontanous and make strange decisions that don't seem logical. From the outside it can look like she is disorganised, but it is more that she wants to pursue her own interests and gets wrapped up in things. Other than wanting to be fantastic at divination, she can lack direction.

The arrow of sensitivity suggests that she can be easily hurt and tries to hide her feelings. That she was shy as a child, but this is overcome now. The arrow of frustrations suggests that she will suffer more than her fair share of disappointments and frustration.

Eta is also a Hufflepuff Capricorn, which reiterates that she is an 'extraordinary' hard worker. She does have a strong sense of duty, and might not realise it but is a good leader, in that people like her, she works hard and she notices things. If you can get her off the possibility that your group project is doomed, she's great to work with.

Her family do enjoy winding her up a bit. For example, for a while she completely believed her father had written to Hogwarts to say she couldn't study Divination in third year and had to take Muggle Studies. Despite the fact she would have been good at the subject, the idea was abhorrent!

Childhood

Eta is the third born of three girls to Octavius and Catherine Pepper. Her older sisters are Zeta and Theta. None of the girls are actively overjoyed at the choice of naming after the greek alphabet… Zeta is a Hufflepuff 7th year, and a gifted cartoonist, who spends more time dedicated to perfecting characters of Professors and students, or SAWS than her studies. Theta is an unspeakable, training under their uncle Francis, to make timeturners.

Eta is the youngest. Her parents wondered if they might have a boy as a third child, but Eta was fated to be a girl. She is Hufflepuff like Zeta, but two years younger. She is the same age as her cousin, Tim, and Eta grew up with him, though they are more chalk and cheese these days in interests.

Hogwarts

Eta was overjoyed to be sorted into Hufflepuff, the same house as her middle sister, Zeta. She had been worried she might be sorted into Ravenclaw which would have come with great expectations academically for her, and she wasn't sure she would match up to them. She didn't want to be in Slytherin (who does?!) and she supposed she'd be ok if that hat had picked Gryffindor, as her cousin Ambrose was doing ok there. Hufflepuff just felt right. Her house gets her. Friendly, supportive, Hufflepuffs get the job done.

Eta studied runes, arithmancy and divination as her electives. She once hid under a desk in Defence Against the Dark Arts to avoid the boggart lesson, because she knew what her boggart was. She faced it eventually, but is known for the fact her boggart was (and still is) her teacher. She couldn't wait to finish those lessons.

Eta was most commonly found either in the Hufflepuff common room or in the divination classrooms.

Eta finished her fifth year at Hogwarts with a mixed bag of results in summer 2013. It was no surprise that she wouldn’t pass Defences, purely based on the practical part of the exam. She didn’t need to predict that outcome, but swears she saw that she would get outstandings for Runes and Arithmancy. She was frustrated at her result in Divination, but swears it is because only seers can get outstanding and it’s not fair.

The end of fifth year was bittersweet in that it was the end of Zeta’s time at school, leaving Eta as the last sister there. Of course Tim was still with her, but she would miss her big sister terribly, as she had Theta before her. However, she stepped up to help run SAWS as Zeta moved on and Hufflepuffs always rallied round.

In the sixth and seventh years (2013-15) Eta did her best but was never a model student. She became more spiritual in her approach to life, pondering why magic existed and whether there was a god or higher spirit. She encountered several inhabitants of Artemis Coven on a weekend visit to Slandermouth in July 2014, during the summer holidays between her sixth and seventh years at Hogwarts. They invited her round and she fell in love with their lifestyle, vowing to return once she finished her studies. Meanwhile, she worked a part time job in the holidays at Paedico Predico.

It was clear where Eta’s interests had shifted with her goals. She spent more time out of the castle and in nature, or in the greenhouses. She still predicted the odd death but took her divination far more seriously now. Anticipating her move out of the family home and wanting to go full time at Paedico Predico, Eta threw her all into her apparition license, and passed first time.

Post Hogwarts

In Summer 2015 she was out of boarding school and moving into the coven. After a few weeks she was sworn in as a sister, and now has a home in the cottage in Slandermouth. Her favourite duties are the garden ones. She has learned huge amounts from the other witches and has embraced her lifestyle, however unconventional her old school friends think it is.

Eta meanwhile works at Praedico, on a modest wage. She has learned how to make wearable charms, provides tarot readings and number analysis for customers. She is the youngest member of staff but has established friendships with her colleagues in a sisterly, or daughterly manner.

Eta grows gillyweed (openly post legalisation of its other uses) in the coven garden, and regularly experiments with other substances, still hoping to open her inner eye. If she can ever scrape more money together she wants to go backpacking with some of the other coven members and ‘find herself’.

She is unsure what her sexuality is - though her big sister has married, and her other sister is in a relationship with a witch, Eta is waiting it out to see. She is mostly surrounded by witches and women, many of whom have very fluid genders or sexualities.
