Penchi is the Vermulakonda family post owl. Given the parents are a ambassador from South India and magical relator in the UK, with the children attending Hogwarts, Penchi flies plenty of miles to deliver messages with minimal complaint. He's an austere owl known for showing up unexpectedly, rather silently, and having a very intense stare. He will also nip at people who mishandle retrieving the letters he delivers.
Harlan suggests his name related to the Penchapenchi, an owl-like monster from regional folklore. It's highly doubtful that Penchi is related to such creatures, known for preying on travelers lost in the woods and draining their blood to feed. And yet, Penchi is somewhat ruthless in his purpose of delivering post. He has the unerring ability to track down members of the family if he's nearby, even without mail, and will hoot disapprovingly to those that are lost or up to no good. Given his stealthy tendencies its easy for Penchi to startle other people.
