Nicodemus Avery wants the world in his hand and feels he deserves it. He's mean, snobby, and can be cruel. His father is of the infamous pureblood Avery family and among his family were once Death Eaters. He has the capacity to be more, but so far kindness has not offered him more than his current path of wealth and status.
Physical Description
Nicodemus is a skinny white boy of sixteen years with dark brown hair, light eyes, and angular features. He's tall now and will probably keep up with the curve and join the men in his family at around 6'. Nico is not particularly athletic; dueling is his game.
Everything about Nicodemus is about status and appearances, from the way he speaks, to how he does his hair, to his clothes, to his choice of company. It's important to him that people know that he's an Avery, that he has status, and that he's going to be a powerful player in the Wizarding World.
He carries himself with a confidence bordering on arrogant, but there's a slight vibration to him, like he's holding back fidgeting or something's itchy.
Personality Description
Nico is a smug, mouthy little prick always quick to cut down or evade responsibility. He spins most things to support a reality where he comes out on top.
Most of his opinions are parroted from his family as he's always been well-rewarded when they've been well-recited. He socializes easily but will go after people he thinks are weaker. Now that he's fully a teenager, a lot of his and his friends' fun comes at the vying for the upper hand in the school social ecosystem. He's had a girlfriend or two, for the clout of it, but the relationships were shallow. He considers true romance to be nonexistent at worst and frivolous at best - partnering up is about getting what you want and getting ahead.
So far at Hogwarts, he's been deft with the professors: flattering, congenial, cooperative, and occasionally hinting at favors his family would be able to confer. He does well in his studies due to expensive tutoring before Hogwarts and during the summer, and he does genuinely enjoy reading. He doesn't do as well with Potions because it feels like something for witches and is too near to cooking and cleaning. Merlin, and so much waiting.
Deep down, Nico just really wants a break. He'd love the luxury of not having to try, he'd love to be able to be lazy and fail and not have to live up to anyone's standards. All the same, he's quite indoctrinated in an elitist and purist worldview where someone has to hold the line to ensure family and Wizarding society does not fall to the gutters.
History
Nicodemus's branch of the pureblood Avery family are well respected high-power, high-galleon lawyers with much inherited wealth mainly held in property. Even the black mark of having had among their lineage convicted Death Eaters has not seemed to meaningfully dent their clout. They played contrition properly in the immediate aftermath of the final downfall of the Dark Lord, and made a great show of philanthropy and played 'tough on crime' in the press the intervening decade. All the while, they maintained their powerful ties and property, even bolstering it with connections abroad.
All of this, of course, was presented piece-meal to Nico with the bits removed that a child could misspeak about or become misunderstood.
Hercule Avery has had two wives and between them four children, two boys and two girls. Nicodemus's mother is Hercule's current wife, Ophelia née Clearwater. Nicodemus's sister is called Magdalena. As an Avery, Nicodemus has many notable relatives with whom he's slowly becoming acquainted as he comes of age. Indeed, he has been trotted out more and more at parties and Ministry events that his parents attend as he hasn't grown up to be a disappointment so far.
Nico started at Hogwarts in 2013 and was sorted into Gryffindor. No one was very concerned about this as his parents were both of the opinion that the entire Sorting hat situation was a joke and a gimmick, especially with the previous year's 'Nothingpuff' foul up. Nicodemus's family were among those not at all unhappy to see Greyfriar go and Storm, a Wizard of better opinions and practices, come in.
It's an unconventional fit, but there must be something there. Perhaps it is that Nicodemus is brave, loyal, and keen to defend what he thinks is important. If you were to look into Nicodemus's heart you might wonder if the Sorting Hat really did never recover from 2012, but what's to be learned from the heart of an eleven-year-old, really? Maybe he was more idealistic then.
In his second year, he successfully battled down the unfortunate nickname of Itchy Avery. Before his fourth year, he acquired a good Dueling tutor over the summer so that he could get a jump on things at the school club. Through his fifth year he started talking seriously about "going into law" and kind of won't shut up about it.
His relationship with his parents is a little distant as he was raised mostly by a series of nannies. If he's behaving properly, his parents treat him warmly.
