Liu Ji (or in the western tradition, Ji Liu) is a researcher of The Ten-Lords Commission - an autonomous government department in China. His research is primarily to do with death and the afterlife.
As of May 2018, Ji has been sent to the British Department of Mysteries to examine its Death Chamber, as part of the Unspeakable Exchange Programme.
He has been given the additional assignation of Diplomatic Liaison, which authorizes him to advise non-Unspeakables on matters to do with his research.
Personality
You would be hard-pressed to find someone as seemingly straight-edged and formal as Liu Ji. Having grown up in a strict, honourable family, he is accustomed to setting high standards for himself in terms of discipline and behaviour.
Many of his peers would refer to him as humourless, lacking as he is in a social life. He is dedicated to his work and takes things too literally. However, underneath all this is someone who has defied familial expectations, and who is accustomed to working independently. Ji is more of a rebel than he lets on.
His foci (wand equivalent) is an ivory calligraphy brush that can be magically extended into a jiang (straight sword). Ji practices Chen Tai Chi.
History
Ji was born into a prestigious family of scholars, diplomats and politicians. As a child, it was initially assumed that he was mentally ill as he was non-verbal until the age of five. This allowed his parents to apply to have a second child (permitted under China's one child policy).
It was later understood that Ji was born a natural legilimens, which factored into his non-verbal nature. Despite this, familial expectations were still low.
Ji's father was the Chinese ambassador to the UK, whilst his mother was a translator. He grew up at the ambassador's residence in London until he was eight years old, when his father was transferred to a position in Australia.
At eleven, Ji began his education at Dragon's Gate Academy. He went on to have a successful academic record, and disappointed relatives by his changing of Domains at school. Ji chose not to focus on social sciences, as was expected from someone of his family.
In his final years at school, he interned at the The National Realm Secrets Commission - this is where he was spotted and eventually recruited by the Ten-Lords Commission.
