Kayden Moore

From Absit Omen Lexicon

You won't find a more loyal and patient friend than Kayden, if you are capable of winning him over. He is a gentle, wise person who cares deeply for those around him, whether he shows it or not. He is undoubtedly scarred, in far too many ways, but it has awarded him a deep sense of empathy - especially utilized towards those who have suffered similar fates. He is a quiet guardian, capable of violence and power but abstaining from it, seeking instead to heal and support those who need it most.

Physical Description

Kayden is overbearingly tall, is the first thing you'll notice about him. Standing at 6'5 he is easy to spot in most crowds, furthered by the shock of blonde hair on tan skin and sharp blue eyes. Kayden has multiple moles across his face and neck (everywhere, if you ever forced him to admit it) and a very distinct, angular jawline. Kayden is like a walking bodyguard for Resalyn, and it shows in his physique as well; Kayden found an outlet for his grief in exercise, and as such has formidable musculature that only emphasizes his imposing height. He has a very striking face, but does not seem to either notice or care when it is pointed out to him. His smile is broad and endearingly lopsided, with a singular dimple in his left cheek.

Kayden keeps his hair cropped relatively short in a slightly militaristic fashion, and only allows Resalyn to cut it. Kayden is a hygienic person, but has no qualms with dirt after living with Resalyn in the garden most of his life, and quite prefers the outdoors to anything indoors. He has many scars from his past that he does not show and often conceals in various ways – the most common being makeup or charms, as he is quite intrigued by makeup – but the most visible one arcs across his left collarbone and down his sternum. He is quite sensitive about them, and will shut down if anybody mentions them should he forget to cover them sufficiently.

Personality Description

At first glance Kayden seems like the worst type of person; with his intimidating stature and overall silence, he seems more like a threatening Slytherin than the stereotypical Hufflepuff. Kayden communicates with others in short sentences that can easily come off gruff and unfeeling, especially if he does not know you well. In reality Kayden is a big reader and quite eloquent, prone to introspection and philosophy. If you enamor him with certain subjects he’s liable to talk for hours, and is quite the attentive listener – almost to the point of it being intense, for he cares deeply for everyone’s individual viewpoints. After watching the death of his family as a child, he does not trust or love easily, and is found as Resalyn's shadow at almost all hours. Even so, Kayden hides almost all of himself behind the silence of his voice, but it does not make him unkind in the slightest.

Kayden, when he reveals himself to you, is the softest and most gentle giant you could meet. He cares deeply for others and is intensely loyal, as made evident by his eternal dedication to Resalyn. A very patient, almost parental soul, he has a habit of taking in the lost and the wanderers and has a deep sense of empathy. He is heroic, to the point of being firmly on the side of Gryffindor, but his heart is pure and golden and his morals firm and unyielding. He is a hard worker and a dedicated team member, but most often takes the role of a guiding leader.

Of course Kayden is far from perfect. He is fiercely protective of those smaller or weaker than he, and has been known to submit to violence on behalf of others. After being tortured as a child he knows his way around hexes and grey magic that is quite dubious at times, but he only ever uses them in the fierce defense of others. Kayden does not trust easily, and he can be brutally honest around those he finds need to be taken down a notch. A firm believer in equality and justice, it can sometimes become a flaw with his disdain for those who bully or intimidate their way through life. Kayden has a persona quite like an old man, seeming grumpy and gruff and overall bitter to those who don’t know him. It is his defense mechanism, both to help keep his imposing nature as Resalyn's self-appointed protector but also to keep others away so as not to be hurt emotionally. For he’s really quite sensitive in regards to matters of the heart, and feels emotions deeply and profoundly.

History

Kayden was born into a muggle family, and had a younger sister name Aylin. He had a decent childhood, though a bit strict. Aylin was a very fragile child but beloved by her family, and Kayden was the epitome of perfect big brother. He and Aylin were very close as siblings, and Kayden was an eloquent and thoughtful child, adored and appreciated by his parents and family friends. They lived a quiet, peaceful life, one that many people would envy for how comfortable and happy they were with one another.

It all came to an end when one night his house was broken into, and he was held captive and forced to watch his family die painfully at the hands of a small unknown band of hired men. Unknown to Kayden, his parents were involved in dark affairs like gambling and fraud, and they had finally been tracked down by one of the groups that had been duped by the pair. When Aylin was killed, they turned to torture the boy, scarring his back and chest while he lay screaming. Resalyn's father, who lived in the same neighborhood, heard the screaming and called the police, who soon arrived to save the boy before he was killed. Kayden was immediately placed in the local hospital, his entire world shown to be a lie and newly orphaned within hours. Resalyn's father felt responsible for the child after having saved him, and as such checked up on him in the infirmary often with his daughter.

Kayden and Resalyn were friends in the distant sort of way, having lived in the same neighborhood. They did not grow close until after the massacre. Resalyn was the first person he saw when he opened his eyes in the medical ward. Resalyn's father didn't explain the circumstances behind his violent entrance to orphanhood, but the girl was determined to help him nonetheless. She begged her father to take custody of him and aid him, and the man eventually agreed. Kayden remained mute for almost a year, haunted by what he had seen, what he had learned about his family, and all that he had lost. Resalyn was as gentle with Kayden as she was with everything else she touched, and over time Kayden thawed and warmed to the kind girl that had become his best friend. He followed her everywhere, attempting to speak once more if only for her sake, for she had done so much for him. The first word Kayden ever spoke after the massacre would be the nickname he'd always call her by -- "Res".

Kayden grew up in the Crane household, gardening with Resalyn and reading in sunny alcoves or beneath shaded trees. The peace of his former life had been destroyed, but he found it in fragments over the years as he grew up with Resalyn. He followed Resalyn like a shadow, and the two became inseparable. Kayden found solace in exercise, working alongside Resalyn in the dirt and shrubbery of their backyard. He was not as knowledgeable in herbs and plants as she was, but he was an attentive disciple, and knew his way around the garden far better than any other his age.

His life was not without bullies, but he was kind and quiet and did not resort to the deeply buried violence in his heart when they would antagonize him. However the moment Resalyn was bullied, intimidated, or insulted, Kayden was there to protect and defend her. Just as she was for him, in her own meek and quiet ways.

When Resalyn was assaulted, Kayden never forgave himself. To this day he still does not believe he is worthy of forgiveness, and takes the blame wholly upon himself for what happened to her. They healed like twisted trees, out of shape and wrong to others, but finding stability in their own codependency.

They discovered their magic together, and explored it side by side. Their letters were delivered through the same owl, they visited Diagon Alley together, and their supplies were all bought in twos - if they did not deem they could share it equally, at least. They sat together on the train, and they walked hand-in-hand through the halls to the Sorting Hat. It was truly not much of a surprise when they ended up in the same house.

Kayden does not seem like the typical Hufflepuff, but the archetypes of the houses are also something he considers to be as ridiculous as any other societal notion. He is fiercely loyal to the point of it becoming a flaw, infinitely patient, and incredibly friendly when he becomes close to somebody. His dedication to any task he finds passion in also lends him the persistence seen in most Hufflepuffs, and his empathy secures the softer and more emotionally-attuned parts of being a real Hufflepuff. He feels everything profoundly and deeply, and is a nurturing soul who desires to help others – though with a more chivalrous twist, as he is willing to sacrifice himself for that cause.
