Josiah Whifferdill

From Absit Omen Lexicon

Josiah, or Joey as most of his friends call him, is a happy-go-lucky hopless (and sometimes hapless) romantic, who struggles with the more sensitive side of his personality. Empathetic and caring he is a loyal friend and unafraid of hard work. His real joy in life is making music, whether it's playing or writing makes little difference to him.

Physical Description

Muscular, with fairly broad shoulders already and toned arms from years of helping around the little family farm. Brown hair, vaguely styled in the sense he ran his fingers through it after getting up (usually a little late). Warm brown eyes, quick to crinkle at the corners with a laugh or smile.

He pays zero attention to trends, happy in his worn jeans and wrock band t-shirts. He lives in hoodies when he's not in uniform and somehow even when he is in uniform he looks mildly unkempt, as though he couldn't be bothered with ironing spells. Basically if it's clean (or smells clean at least) he'll wear it. If one looks closely enough they might be able to spot the skillful patch jobs he's done on the knees of his pants or the odd spot on his robes.

Personality Description

Joey would like to believe that all the good attributes of Hufflepuff and Pisces apply to who he is as a person. Some of the obvious parallels are, well, obvious. He's a creative type who cares deeply for not only his housemates but the general well being of wizarding kind. He is idealistic in everything that he does, quick to believe the best about others and slow to accept the worst. He genuinely believes if you give people the opportunity to do good they will follow through of their own volition. He believes in being the kind of friend you'd want to have and that forgiveness is a very important skill. The problem with this attitude is that it often leads to hurt feelings because he hasn't yet accepted that you can't expect people to be the kind of friend or person you are. He's very sensitive, though he tries very hard to seem exactly the opposite of that. It would be safe to say he's living a "zero chill" life while trying to be as traditionally masculine as possible.

He is, at the ripe old age of sixteen, a hopeless romantic. He is in love with the idea of love and has been since he was about six. He was absolutely smitten with the little red haired girl who lived up the lane from the family farm and the pair had many play dates involving games of house and a pretend wedding. He is the sort to write volumes of poetry and love songs when truly smitten with someone; had he been more exposed to muggle culture he'd probably be a rom-com fanatic. He still believes in fairy tales, that the right guy always gets the right girl and everyone can have a happily ever after (despite the shock of his parents splitting up earlier in the year). He is the essence of Lloyd Dobler and doesn't even know who that guy is! It'd be hilarious if it wasn't kind of tragic.

He struggles with the idea of being as sentimental and sensitive as he is. He tries very hard to distance himself from that image the further into 5th year he progresses. He doesn't want to seem weak in front of he friends but at the same time has a hard time saying "no" which inevitably gets him stuck in awkward positions and the middle of mind game mine fields. He harbors a secret sort of envy of those around him who seem to have an easier time being comfortable in their own skin. He lacks the drive and confidence to be a true leader but still tries to muster the machismo he sees on display between the more boisterous personalities in other houses.

He finds a creative outlet for these frustrations in music of all kinds but specifically alterna-wrock and their acoustic counterparts. Where some wizards possess a natural talent for potions or looking after creatures, Joe finds his happy place in learning various instruments and song writing. There are scrolls upon scrolls of songs his written, journals he's filled with ideas, a constant soundtrack playing in his head for the day to day misadventures one finds themselves in the middle of while attending Hogwarts. He swiftly moved from piano pieces to learning guitar and various other instruments before eventually discovering he had a knack for making up his own music and lyrics, something he shares with his muggle mother.

History

Pre-Life: Hezekiah Whifferdill met the woman he would marry on the gap year he took between Hogwarts and joining the Ministry. Her name was Francisca but she was known in the little village of Carvalhal as simply Chica. She was the most wildly exotic woman the 18 year old Dorset native had ever seen. This was probably not the best foundation for a relationship but the heart wants what it wants and the pair married within six months and moved back to the small wizarding village Kiah had grown up in. In the end he didn't go to work for the Ministry, instead staying close to home and help his father tend to the animals and his beautiful wife.

Childhood

The couple had been married for about a year and a half when Chica found herself pregnant with Josiah. It wasn't an easy pregnancy and it was made harder for the new mother dealing with healers and midwives rather than trained doctors. She was a stranger in a strange land, her family seeming so far away and she had no real way to communicate with them beyond letters. She hadn't quite known what to make of the magical world, it had seemed like such an adventure when Kiah asked her to come home with him. By the time Josiah actually came into the world there was a rift between the couple, but neither party believed in divorce so they tried to make it work. This was the world waiting for Joey when he arrived, the stale love between his parents fostering in him a desire for the fairytale endings Chica read to him every night. For the most part he was a happy baby and a content little boy. There were plenty of adventures to be had on the farm. He grew up strong following after his father and grandfather, while his mother fostered his love and gift for music.

Early Hogwarts: He got his letter at the age of eleven as a wizarding is apt to do and while he was sad to leave home it was a day he'd been waiting for since he was old enough to know what magic was! There was some guilt about leaving his mother behind. Even after twelve years she had yet to really take to living in Piddlehinton, in many ways Josiah was her link to the rest of the world. Still, he was nearly giddy on the train and boat rides. There was no greater moment in life than the moment the Sorting Hat was placed on your head, and there was a whole group of students from Piddlehinton he already knew! He even managed to get sorted into the same house as his friend Winnie. Of course his father and grandfather had been Gryffindors but Joey saw no reason to be ashamed of his Hufflepuff nature. They are particularly good finders after all.

Recently

His mother seemed especially proud when he explained to her what each house was known for... and that was just what life was like for the next four years. He spent the summer and holidays working on the farm with his father and learning all his mother had to teach him about the joys of music. Of course it did not escape his attention that the rift between his parents had grown into a chasm, but it still came as a shock on the first Hogsmeade weekend of fifth year when Hezekiah met him in the village and explained that his mother had decided to return to Carvalhal. He couldn't decide which disturbed him more, that she had just left or that she hadn't bothered to say goodbye. Soon these worries were replaced by the recent events of having classmates going missing and the kidnappings of February. He hasn't had a lot of time to focus on the supposed frivolity of being 16 as he's spent a good deal of time as a sounding board for troubled housemates. Though it's not yet spring he can't wait for the summer holiday and the chance to get away from everything and visit his mother in her small Portuguese village.

Josiah is a pretty classic Hufflepuff, an empathetic loyal friend to most people he meets, hardworking with a strong sense of right and wrong. He loves to help people and is usually the first to offer any energy he can spare. This drive also applies to his lessons, though more in the hopes of doing something important for the Wizarding World rather than the sake of knowledge itself.
