Irene Carstairs, née Carter, is a sensible and level-headed witch. Or at least she is now. When she first met her husband (current Minister of Magic) she was a foolish thing who dropped her training as a Healer to pursue a more flexible career so as to be able to spend more time in a domestic role.
As a photographer for the Daily Prophet, she developed excellent skills and discovered a natural talent. Sometimes the work could be risky - especially as she become more passionate about it and keen to cover dangerous stories - but it was not the job that led to Irene being bitten by a werewolf. That happened during the second wizarding war.
For the past fifteen or so years, Irene has been working as an artistic photographer with great success. She is passionate about the arts and literature, and for this reason gets along fabulously with the more artistic Carstairs.
Despite harbouring strong opinions about werewolf rights, she does not speak out due to her husbands' work at the Ministry. Like Solomon, Irene is always aware or public perception and how it can affect their lives. This is part of why she has continued to stay with Solomon, despite finding out about his past love affairs and love child.
