Wand: 10 ½ inch tulip wood wand with unicorn tail hair core. The wand itself is bendy and springy and the shaft of the wand is straight and smooth with a red-orange colour. The handle of the want has a spiralled pattern, adding a little distinction to the wand itself.

Physical Description:

Felix stands at around 6’1” tall and is quite lean. Though he tends to be a creature of the night due to the nature of his work, he likes to round the night off with a jog before heading to bed for his day nap. 

His hair is darker at the roots and lighter at the tips. It seems to go from mid-brown to dark blonde, and he wears it in a messy style. It is shorter on the sides and longer on the top, and he tends to style it by sticking it up slightly at the top but giving it the slightly tousled look.

Felix has deep brown eyes with flecks of hazel in them. His mother has described them in the past as being ‘chocolaty’, something which he is quite proud of, being a lover of chocolate himself.

His face has retained some of its baby roundness and he has a very slight dimple in his chin. He has a tattoo running from under his right armpit to his hip. It reads ‘Consectatio In Excellentiae’ with the letters in old Latin style, each one below the previous. This tattoo is charmed, so that it changes into the English translation ‘In Pursuit of Excellence’ every once in a while, but the lettering in a more scripted style.

Personality Description:

Felix is still a child at heart. He is a creature of the night, this being when he works, but he doesn’t need much sleep after a long night of working. Four or five hours sleep each morning after work tends to be enough to keep him going. He has a happy-go-lucky attitude and his glass is always half full. His name, Felix Isaac literally translates as ‘Lucky Laughter’, which completely sums up his personality.

Like all the Marren men, and like a lot of Irish people in general, Felix can have a temper on him when it flares up which, thankfully doesn’t happen very often. He has travelled the world a lot, and has lost the pronounced Irish accent, though it becomes more evident when he is excited, angry or drunk.

He has an enormous stubborn streak and when he sets his mind on something it is guaranteed that he will keep on at it until he either succeeds or fails. Sometimes he can be a little stroppy when things don’t go his way, but this tends to be focussed more on his work, where succeeding is a big aim of his.

His work and personal life are completely different. At work he is determined and unrelenting. He is serious and tidy and more often than not, quiet. In normal hours he is the polar opposite, being easy going, relaxed, untidy and at times a little dishevelled.

Felix has an addictive personality but also an inability to say ‘no’ to people. His well-mannered nature is one that aims to help and please everybody in a way that just isn’t naturally possible. He is influenced by other people’s perceptions of him, as he genuinely wants to be a well-liked person.

Wanting to enjoy the most out of life, Felix often forgets normal daily things, such as feeding himself and sleeping. His energy is of someone who gets a lot of sleep and eats lots, but he is not that person. Though, when food is set down in front of him, he eats like a horse. This is one of the reasons he chooses to eat out more often than cook for himself. He feels that there are more important things in life than having to slave over a stove.

Felix is very adept at reading people’s personalities. Sometimes he is accused of being judgemental or biased, but more often than not his first impressions of people tend to be right. The slightest word out of place or movement of the face can set him off studying the person in question and trying to assess the situation. This is due to his extremely analytical mind.


History:

Felix Isaac Marren was born on Tuesday 13th March, 1979 under the gaze of a full moon. He has been told that he caused quite a lot of bother on his way out, and at one point the doctors didn’t think he actually wanted to come out. His parents, Mary and Garret assumed that this was an omen of years to come. They thought he would be a problematic child, and hoped against hope that by giving him the name ‘Felix Isaac’ which translates as ‘Lucky Laughter’, they would fool the fates into giving their son a more agreeable disposition than the one he came into the world with.

Whether they managed to fool the fates or this was actually what the fates had planned, his parents got their wish. Felix was a quiet child and slept through the night well. He caused no problems in his early years and was a well-behaved toddler. Of course, he had his older brother Jason to look up to, which probably helped.

All throughout his childhood Felix wanted to be just like Jason. When their youngest brother Derek was born, Felix was five. Like the rest of the family he was immediately taken with Derek who laughed his way through life from the very first day.

When Jason went to Hogwarts, Felix found himself in quite a slump. He now had no older brother to look up to and follow around, and found that instead it was he who was being looked up to. Felix wasn’t quite as embracing of Derek as Jason had been of him. Perhaps it was middle child syndrome, or maybe it was just that Jason and Felix were closer in age than Felix and Derek, but Felix couldn’t wait to get away from home and get to Hogwarts. He spent a lot of his time watching the night sky with the telescope that Jason had bought him for Christmas in his first year at Hogwarts.

This happened when Jason was going into his fourth year of Hogwarts. His parents had been so pleased that their eldest son had shown such potential by being sorted into Ravenclaw, and Felix was just as eager to please them. Felix was ecstatic when he was also sorted into Ravenclaw and was once again reunited with his brother. Jason was patient and good to Felix, even though their age difference was all of a sudden seemingly greater than it was when they were younger. Jason’s friends didn’t understand why Jason was so happy to spend time with Felix, as they were all interested in the ‘girl’ stage of their lives.

At school, Felix’s fascination with the night sky grew considerably, and he excelled at Astronomy all through his seven years there. When they were deciding what they would like to pursue as a career in their fifth year, Felix made his mind up straight away; astronomy. He was aware that there were a few positions at the Ministry of Magic for astronomers in the Department of Mysteries, and although that appealed to him, he wasn’t ready to settle down in a permanent job just yet. He felt that there was so much he still had to learn, and he was desperate to learn it.

At the age of eighteen, Felix packed his bags and went travelling to increase his knowledge of the stars. His first stop was in Greece, to visit the Greek Centaurs. Though not normally open to human contact, they were intrigued by such a young man being so openly interested in what they were experts in. Their powers allowed them to see that it was a genuine thirst for knowledge on Felix’s part, and made them more willing to allow him into their fold. That as well as his stubbornness when they refused him the first three times.

He spent four years with the centaurs, draining their knowledge as best he could and trying to compact it into his own brain. After his time with the centaurs, he went back home to visit his family, then took off again. He travelled around various parts of Asia, seeking out the wonders of the skies along the way. He spent time with Astronomy scholars in India and moved on to theorising with Astrophysicists of Japan.

At the age of twenty-five, Felix came back to the UK ready to settle down. He immediately applied for a position at the Ministry of Magic, in the Department of Mysteries as an astronomer and astrophysicist. The Ministry seemed impressed that he had spent so long under the tutelage of the famous centaurs, and instantaneously put him in as the apprentice to an old scholar, Billabus Duldridge. Duldridge had been a scholar for the Ministry for almost sixty years, and was considering retreating into retirement. He said, however, that he wouldn’t leave while there was no one to take his place. Felix’s enquiries into the position and his eagerness to impress assured the Ministry that Felix was the man for the job, and with the right training he would be a great scholar just as his predecessor.

A year after he joined the Ministry as an apprentice, Jason married his fiancée, Fiona. Felix was honoured to be an usher at their wedding, and could see that Jason was as happy as could be. Felix’s first nephew was born ten days after his own twenty-eighth birthday. Aidan very quickly became the light of his life, and though he had never seriously considered settling down and having kids, this started him thinking about it more. He made excuses to go round and see Jason and Aidan (which wasn’t hard, since Fiona was gone a lot of the time and Jason often welcomed the company)and treasured the time he could spend with them both, watching Aidan grow.

The summer of 2007 saw Duldridge finally retiring, and Felix taking his place as Head Astronomer for the Ministry of Magic. He loves his job and couldn’t imagine doing anything else for a living.

The news of Jason’s split from Fiona didn’t come as a shock to Felix; he knew just how little time they spent together and knew it was only a matter of time before they grew apart. The means by which they split, however did come as a shock. Their mother posted him the Daily Prophet one day with a scrawled note attached, telling Felix to read the centre spread. He did and was confused by what he read. Jason wasn’t the type to cheat. He loved his wife and son more than anything in the world. But according to the paper, it was true. Jason didn’t deny it, and Felix felt a little alienated from him, based on the fact that Jason had felt he couldn’t tell Felix about what he was going through.

Felix is trying to help Jason through whatever turmoil is clouding his head at the moment, but he’s finding it hard when he feels like he has been left in the dark for so long.

Felix is the Head Astronomer for the Department of Mysteries in the Ministry of Magic. He is in charge of overseeing the research into the importance of astrophysical matter in magical life. His research involves collating data from all around the world and analysing it to try and put meaning to the outer world.

Felix’s job is one of increasing importance; the more that is discovered about the surroundings of Earth, the more questions that are asked about the history of magic, where it stems from, how it will develop and why only certain people are blessed with the ability.

Socioeconomic Level: Felix makes his own money, and refuses to ever live off his parents money. His travels around the world were funded by him working whenever and wherever he could while he was out in the wide world. His job at the Ministry is a relatively well-paid one; being Head Astronomer and Astrophysicist in wizarding England has its advantages.

Talents/Skills:
  • Accomplished pianist; his mother wanted him to learn an instrument from a young age, and the piano seemed to be the only one he showed any interest in. He later learned how to read music, and then write it. He has been writing his own music for over a decade, but keeps it as a hobby as opposed to something he would try and make money out of.
  • Fluent in French; on his travels around the world, Felix met and befriended a young French girl by the name of Émilie. She was visiting family in Greece, in a nearby village to where Felix was staying with the Centaurs. Felix managed to convince her to stay longer, and before she knew it she had found herself a job out there and was spending all of her free time with him. When he came home to England after his stint with the Centaurs, she waited for him in Greece, and the pair travelled to Asia together while he learned more about the wonders of the skies. All of the time they were together, best part of seven years, she taught him her native language, and by the time they came to say goodbye he was close to being fluent in French. Though he seriously considered going with her to France, he knew his true calling was back in London. She refused to go with him, and they parted their ways, deciding not to keep in touch as it would be too hard for both of them.

How does he dress? Felix dresses in suits and robes  for work but prefers a more lax approach to clothing in his personal time. His mother often complains of him being a ‘slob’ due to his dislike of dressing up when it is not needed. She would prefer to have him suited and booted for their Sunday roast, whereas Felix often turns up on their doorstep with jeans and a creased tee-shirt on. He often feels as though he maybe should make more of an effort to dress nicely, but then there are always more important things to do with his time.

He tries to have a jog after work every morning before he sleeps, so he owns a lot of sweatpants and old tee-shirts. He has a few caps that he uses to cover up his hair when he can’t be bothered to style it – these annoy his mother even more than the creased tee-shirts.
