[April 16th] Moving Up in the Ward (Ligeia)

on October 09, 2024, 03:01:32 PM

Allura had stayed in the hospital as she had been tended to, mixtures of therapies and checks to make sure there was no spells left over her, other tests and attempts at treatments to make sure she was stable, she wasn't sure if there was a point, there were days she felt like nothing was happening, and of course every day she was there, there was a chance her manager would find her and drag her back, unable to resist it.

But part of her did feel better, though she wasn't sure if she was fixed, she had been told she would be free to leave however but...where would she go now though? She had no money and her wand was long gone, she wasn't even sure where her parents lived now, likely they'd be watching for her there...

Carefully she laid back in the bed, she knew she'd have to leave soon, she couldn't keep hiding here, she'd need somewhere new.

She hugged herself and curled, her hoodie sprawling over her and hiding most of the rest of her except the trainers and jeans. She knew rounds were soon to be coming, it was selfish of her to keep the bed away from others who really needed it but she wished she could just hide here still...

Hearing a person approaching she sat herself up on the bed and looked towards them, it was a private room luckily but she still felt exposed and like she had to keep her voice down for other patients.

"I've got to leave soon don't I?" She asked quietly. "I don't even have my wand..." She said to the person who entered, she was somewhat sure she knew the person she'd seen them before certainly. "Sorry, I...um...you're..." She attempted to recall the Witch's name. "Lie...Lie gear a?"

It was a curious sort of case when Allura Bythesea became a patient at St. Mungo's. Lost in the shadows of the announcement over the missing bodies from the morgue back in February.[1] For the best, as Ligeia considered from what few particulars were worked out since Samuel Chávez first helped her.[2] Bythesea’s safety as a patient was paramount, as was any other, but there was the dangers of who all were behind those lingering spells.

Small teams of healers were sometimes created for long term patients. Overall, Bythesea had reacted more favorably around the younger healers, closer to her age. With Chávez’s recommendation, and the correct approvals Ligeia had been brought into the team assisting the senior healer overseeing her recovery. Mainly to brew Bythesea’s medicines, enough to be visually acquainted as Ligeia made her rounds.

Which was what Ligeia was doing, after the excitements of her class reunion[3] and an unexpectedly crashed gallery showing over the weekend.[4] Turn over a stone or a package of gauze and there was another mystery for the albinistic Ravenclaw to be adjacent to, yet exhilarating all the same! Well, for a witch like Ligeia who found staging her own murder for a parlor mystery breathtaking entertainment. In both contexts.

Now it was back to the usual grindstone. Not that St. Mungo’s had one, that she knew of, but a grindstone had been used in some creature clinics she’d volunteered at to help file down overgrown teeth. At this very minute, Ligeia was dispensing potions to patients. She’d heard Allura Bythesea was getting cleared to leave, although until she left the hospital doors it was better to keep the routine of her medicines.

She rapped on the door with the back of her hand. The soon to be leaving patient was contemplative and sounding worried. Ligeia kept a respectful distance as she went around the bed. "Healer P.E. lie-SCHEE-uh Canterbury," she stated phonetically. "At your service."

Ligeia offered a demur smile to Allura. For once, the jittering of the pale healer's eyes were at a minimum. "One last dose of restorative for your indigestion. Overall you've been feeling better?"

"Lychee Ah..." She shook her head. "Ly...Schee Uh. Sorry." She corrected herself gently, it didn't mean much as she wasn't going to see her again most likely, but she atleast wanted to address her properly after all, it was the polite thing to do and they had been taking care of her, not like it would ultimately amount to much, she was about to be released back into the world and...

She'd just be out on the streets.

"Oh...uh..." Her eyes gently moved towards the potions. "Yeah, I've been doing better." She looked at her feet, what the hell could she do once outside? She had no money to access, or easily atleast, where would she go? She had no OWLS let alone NEWTS.

"If I broke my arm could I stay for longer?" She asked without meaning to, her eyes going up to the Wix infront of her as her fingers dug into her legs. "I mean...not that I would...and there are others who deserve being here more...but I..." She sighed and stood herself up as she closed her eyes. "S-sorry...forget about it..."

“Close,” Ligeia offered. “Soft g sound. Although I do suppose I’m as white as the inside of a lychee fruit. I got to compare the original Chinese, Indian, and Caribbean varieties on my world tour.”

She set aside the medicine dose as Allura Bythesea claimed she was feeling better, although she didn’t fully sound like it. Ligeia wasn’t that skilled at aura reading if she wasn’t channeling a spell, although intuition informed her that there was something scratchy, troubling behind Allura’s mood.

“That would be too painful for what would be a simple cure. You can mend broken bones in a heartbeat.”[1] Ligeia put two fingers on the side of her cheek, as if she was seriously contemplating the request. “Now if somehow all the bones in your arm were to disappear, it’s overnight observation for some Skele Gro."

She offered the singer a small smile. "But regrowing bones is an arduous, painful process. Haven't you had enough of that already in your time recovering?"

She was right, it was stupid to think that breaking her arm would keep her there...and the idea of disappearing her bone was both terrifying and...well not possible, she didn't have her wand, she didn't know the spell, no one there would do it for her either. She was to leave St Mungo's soon...and she didn't have a place to stay.

Homelessness was not something she had ever considered, but then she doubted most people would consider it an option, she wasn't sure she'd ever considered being a famous popstar, even less what had happened to her...

"I...no I don't want that." She said quietly, she crossed her arms over her chest and tucked in her chin, slowly she pulled her legs up to retreat into a small ball once again for protection, not that she needed it, but it was comfortable regardless for her to go with.

"I just...I don't have anything now, what do I do? Where do I even go? I can't...I won't survive on the street." She said softly with a slight choke from her attempting to hold in her emotions.

Some particulars of Bythesea’s case had been kept hushed. Even for the healers involved, Ligeia estimated only those who were Head of a floor knew the full details. So hearing the full despair behind Bythesea's words brought an immediate, concerned frown.

"You have nothing and no place?" What a thing to hear in today's society. Mind, Bythesea's original wand had yet to be recovered, so she was missing a large part of her magical capabilities. A reduction to further outpatient prospects, as St. Mungo's efforts were sometimes limited to what could be done for patients within the walls.

Ligeia had a hint of some very non-healer minded thoughts about those that had thrust Allura Bythesea into the state of health that required this intervention. A malicious intent kept at bay, much as she could easily imagine the worst people did to each other. She looked to Bythesea's hunched, quivering form with minimal quake from her irises.

"That's all?" Ligeia said, although her mind was made up in an instant. "If that's the case we have plenty of room at home. I've considered telling Papa Argyle we should try renting some of the lesser used rooms as the full family rarely returns to the Canterbury Estate." Hell, everyone three degrees removed from Argyle Canterbury might tax accommodations at the Pendragon Hotel if they were all in the same place. Or alive. Including a yeti, if Uncle Griffon ever had to transport one.

Already Ligeia was working through a mental checklist to dare anyone to come up with a better suggestion, as she strategized how best to accommodate Bythesea. "You'd like Dot's room. She calls it her oasis in a house of nutters, but she's in Paris most of the year as it is, so she won't mind. Oh, before we forget the last of your medicine," she passed the cup to Allura.

Allura nodded slowly as the woman spoke, it seemed like...a good idea if she was offering a place to stay but...it didn't solve any of her problems, maybe be a bandaid for now but it wasn't something she felt entirely comfortable of, she didn't have money to pay back and she thought she'd already mentioned she had no money but...

"But...I don't have any money to pay rent, I don't even know how I will make money..." She delicately looked up towards the medicine as it approached her, shakily she reached out to take the drink. Her eyes fixated on the liquid inside...so far none of it had been anything that hurt her but...with one day left here she wondered if her management had managed to find her after all this time and had prepared this as a way to bring her under control once more, now that she was healthier then previously.

Slowly though she drank down the liquid and relaxed herself on the bed, her eyes wandering back over to the Healer.

"I don't even know if I have any money from the music...Or how I'd get a new wand to use."

"Rent for board shouldn't be the first thing you worry about," Ligeia dismissed the concern with a wave of her hand. "That's a topic for when you are as healthy as a horse." Ligeia had learned in her healing career that expanding upon idioms didn't help most patients. For Ligeia, the Thestral was the most magnificent of magical equines, yet those in the ward wouldn't like comparisons to a death omen. Even though Allura didn't look as skeletal as when she had entered.

Bythesea's hesitation with the medicine brought Ligeia concern. It wasn't just a case of physical health but also mental, for everything that she'd been through. "Pardon my asking, but what all do you remember before your time at St. Mungo's?"

Ligeia took the cup back. "It sounds to me like you need a thorough solicitor as well to get what's due to you, for being worked sick in your performing." Tray aside, she began updating Bythesea's charts as she looked at the discharge papers.

"But even then..." She sighed softly at the comment of not needing to worry about rent until she was healthy, how would she then? Was it possible for her to get a job at this point? She never finished Hogwarts and she never learned Muggle stuff so was either possible without...going back to music? That was a terrifying idea for her, she didn't want to get back into it, they'd find her and...she didn't want to sing either.

The question of what she remembered was a difficult one for her...she didn't really remember much still, parts came back but it was all murky and cloudy, like everything was in liquid or it was all a dream.

"I don't know...bits and pieces...why?" She asked in return with a soft sigh.

The solicitor comment though spooked her, her eyes widened and she stared at her. That would draw attention to her, she knew that she'd signed a contract but...she didn't remember what was on there, just her manager holding it above her all the time. "No...I-i can't...they'd get to me..."

Ligeia shook her head gently. "Stressing too much about the future when you are just on the mend will see you sick again, Miss Bythesea." Granted, Allura's entire life was in upheaval, so there was little Ligeia could think of for placating advice. "It's not forever, rather a way of focusing on what you want to do for yourself."

That was the trick, much of Allura's health failing was from the spells and potions that made it compulsory for her to perform. Ligeia hadn't attended any of Allura's concerts, so she had no context for her stage persona. The tests run on Floor Three indicated markers similar to an Unctuous Unction fading from Allura's body. A rather archaic brew first concocted by Gregory the Smarmy, one of the means to control Allura.

"Hmm, perhaps some of your memories will return in time. Or not. There's options that can be explored for memory recovery." Not Ligeia's specialty, but her main concern was getting Allura a place to stay. Oh dear, that would require a large amount of redecorating at the Canterbury Estate. Coats would have to be hung back in the cloakroom, for one, instead of the iron maiden.

Distracted from the discharge forms by her mental checklist, Ligeia looked back towards where Allura sat in the bed looking increasingly frantic. The albino healer's heart twinged with sympathy; she could even think of which tendon it was that fluttered.

"My dear, do you mind if I sit?" Ligeia leaned against the frame at the foot of the bed for now. Careful to let Allura make the first move. "Did you know your treatment here has been under an alias? It's a protocol for when patients from suspected abusive situations are brought to the hospital. Such as the manager you're worried about."

Ligeia might have to find out more of the particulars after providing the singer room and board. "As far as I know, your manager was told Allura Bythesea was transferred to St. Brigid's Hospital in Kildare, Ireland. As part of joint study into treatment for a voice stealing curse. Or disease, can't recall. Rumor suggests he took the news like a swift kick to the teeth."
