[1 Sept] How Are You With Handling Hats?

on September 02, 2022, 05:30:24 PM

A Hogwarts owl arrives to the home of Minerva McGonagall late late  on the night of the 1st of September. It is from Knox Greyfriar addressed to his predecessor.

1 Sept 2012

Minerva, I find myself wondering (urgently) this evening if you had ever known the Sorting Hat to decline to do what he's meant do to do. Do not mistake this as hypothetical. I have several dozen unsorted first year students making camp in old Tournament guest quarters. Sincerely, madam, the hat has spoke not a word or moved a single fold of its own volition all day.

Hoping you are well,

K. G.

The handsome owl found the headmistress emeritus resting comfortably in her Hogsmeade residence. The professional bird shared a perch with Minerva's owl as it waited impatiently for her reply. That reply was neither hurried nor delayed in coming. Though Minerva acknowledged the severity of the situation, an answer to the Headmaster's inquiry took thought.

When the owl did return to Hogwarts, letter clutched in its beak - it might have been joined by other owls winging their way to the same destination. Some of those birds might have been clutching red envelopes in their beaks.

Greyfriar,

As far as I know, the hat has been used for sorting since the day it was taken off the head of Godric Gryffindor - without fail. There hasn't been an issue with the sorting hat in the last half century, and I don't believe there ever has been. You should confer with the portraits in the head office, but I doubt they will have much to add.

I assume all logical routes to rouse the hat have been taken and failed. I have a few suggestions, but I'll need to have a look.

Until then, have an Occlumens examine the hat. The hat uses Legilimancy to sort the students, so an Occlumens may tell us something you or I would miss.

Kindly reply with the best time for me to drop in.

M. McGonagall

As soon as you're able. As I said, the first years are unsorted. I don't know how long that will be tolerable.

My thanks and apologies in advance.
