Physical Description:
Owen is five foot eight inches and on the thin side for someone who routinely throws around large bags of soil and fertilizer. But that’s what charms are for. He has blue eyes and light brown hair. He has fair skin that despite his time outside has only ever managed to take a light tan and nothing more. He often is found supporting a beard though he rarely lets it grow out too much.
As often as not his robes are his work robes and are well worn and never completely dirt free. Though they never have holes or patches. He does clean up well, but only when necessary. As far as Owen is concerned, cleaning up means not being covered in dirt and not smelling like fertilizer.
Personality Description:
Owen always loved to get his hands into the thick of it. Whether it was the dirt around the plants he was tending or into whatever conflict was brewing between his siblings or cousins. Though depending on his mood he was just as likely to play peacemaker as he was provocateur. Such was the life of being the youngest sibling.
He enforces that rules that keep his children safe, but as long as no one is hurt he is relatively lenient with his children and his nieces and nephews. He has never been particularly strict with the kids, but with his father presiding over the Manor, he has never needed to be.
While never forgetting to take care of his children, his family, or his plants, he often gets so wrapped up in worrying about and caring for others that he forgets to take care of himself. Though he takes plenty of pleasure from embarrassing his children in front of their friends.
History:
Born September 25, 1975 to Ignatius Prewett III and Wilhelmina Canterbury, Owen was the youngest of five. There was enough of an age gap with his siblings and cousins that most had already graduated from Hogwarts by the time he started. But he did spend much of his time with his sister Wynelle and cousins Gawain and Gareth who were all two years ahead of him during his first and second years. He eventually made his own group of friends, but of his siblings and cousins he has always been closest to them due to their time at Hogwarts together.
Early on he found a love of herbology and for the next seven years was as likely to have dirt on his robes as not. It also didn’t hurt that with his family’s lands and funds he was able to stay ahead of the rest of class by tending a large greenhouse and several gardens while at home on breaks.
He went on to get perfect NEWTs in Charms, Potions, and most importantly to him, Herbology. Though never more than proficient and precise in potions they weren’t looking for creativity and he delivered perfect potions. Charms was a fluke, and he never figured out how he did so well.
One of the greatest disappointments in his life came the year after he graduated from Hogwarts. He’d already started in the Department of Mysteries in the Potions and Herbological Research Office when it was announced that Hogwarts would host the Triwizard Tournament. He’d never wished to be a year younger until that moment.
That was quickly forgotten as that same summer he got married and then soon after had his first child, Rhys. Though it only barely managed to be in that order. One more child, Madox would follow the same year Voldemort took over the Ministry. Owen, along with the rest of the Prewett’s, left the Ministry during that dark year. Unlike his father and other members of the family, he did not help in the resistance, his skills being less martial than the others and having a new child to look after. Instead, he took charge of the children and grew food and potion supplies for the family and those under the protection of the family.
After the war, he returned to his position in the Potion and Herbological Research Office, finding continued success in the office and two more children. Cerys in the year that followed the war and Bowen some years later.
Following the death of his niece and the still open position of Herbology professor at Hogwarts, Owen decided that with three of his own children, his nieces and nephews, and other cousins attending the school that it would be nice change of pace to teach herbology and be able to keep an eye on the Prewett children while they were away from the manor and family homes, much to the chagrin of said children who suddenly found their father or uncle teaching them in a class they couldn’t avoid.
Describe your job duties and how you go about them:
Owen likes to think that he is a guide on a student’s journey through the greenhouses and the amazing world of plants. In reality, he is a hands-on teacher, expecting students to literally get their hands and gloves dirty on a daily basis. While there is a place for book work, the majority of his classes would be in the greenhouse with protective charms on the books while plants are tended to.
He would be a strict teacher but only because a greenhouse is not a place to horse around. Pull the wrong weed and the whole class dies. Stop paying attention and the poisonous plant sinks its teeth into a hand.
Outside of the classroom, Owen is less strict. If he can avoid it, he would use detention over points as he has never been a fan of public shaming and there is always work to be done in the greenhouses.
Elaborate on your expertise in your field:
Owen has a great deal of experience in Herbology having conducted herbological research his entire adult life for the Ministry. In addition to that, he has several greenhouses and gardens at the Prewett Manor that he cares for.
Writing Sample:
Sum up your character in one paragraph:
Owen likes to be up to his elbows and thinks the best punishment is the one that gets work done. He isn’t the strictest but takes safety seriously. Owen became a teacher to keep an eye on family as much as he did to pass on his love of herbology, but if he can manage to do both he will be ecstatic. He has dedicated his life to his family and his plants, and will see about adding teaching to the list.
