[Nov 4] On the Move

on September 07, 2023, 11:18:57 PM

It was unlike Judy. She was good about stretching, she didn't push herself too hard, she took good care of her body.

And yet here they were, herself and Tempest Sage, just 20 meters away from her house in Hogsmeade - where their run was meant to end - and she could feel a sharp pain in the back of her right thigh.

She clutched the affected leg, and looked over, seeming more apologetic than in pain.

"And it was going so well, too," she said.

They'd been running together for about a month, and until now it had all gone swimmingly, Judy being able to mostly keep up despite being a generation older.

There was something about an early morning run that Tempest just loved. Being out amongst the sights and sounds and scents of the world when the day was fresh and new was incredible, a true blessing. Birds sang hymns to the dawn, dew washed everything clean.

Watching the sun rise over another day was an honor she felt more people should enjoy, so when she ran into Judy Eastman some weeks back she had been more than happy to include her in Tempest's morning venerations. She had been pleasantly surprised to find how much she enjoyed the other woman's company, despite their age difference and it was incredible that they'd not run out of things to talk about.

Thankfully, they were within sight of Judy's front door when the injury presented itself.

"I think you did this on purpose," Tempest said jokingly, probing the problem area with a light and gentle touch, "you somehow knew I was going to suggest we push our run a little further today, didn't you?"

"I heard Puddifoot's has pumpkin scones," Tempest was obsessed with pumpkin.

"It's just as well, I suppose. Sugary treats are no substitute for a proper breakfast," She continued with a wistful sigh and pulled her wand from a holster strapped to her lower leg - running gear did not have any convenient places to carry a foot long stick of wood.

"Let's wrap this and get you inside. You've likely just strained a muscle, but we'll take a closer look indoors," Then she tapped her wand on Judy's thigh and muttered, "Ferula,"

Crisp, clean bandages spilled forth from the tip of Tempest's wand and began wrapping themselves snugly around the older woman's leg.

"I actually had their pumpkin scones just this past Wednesday," Judy replied, with a tone that suggested she'd liked them.

The bandage wrapped over her leg, the top end of it seeming to touch the leg of her shorts. Her outfit aped Ravenclaw house colors - blue sweatshirt and athletic shorts, bronze-colored tank top.

She opted not to play it tough, despite her instincts. Truthfully, in a moment like this, it was convenient to have a healer around of all people. It hadn't really crossed her mind at first, but Tempest was probably the best person to be running with as the years started to creep up on her.

"It didn't feel like it was coming from anywhere near the knee, so that's reassuring," she confirmed. Years of avidly watching sports made her more knowledgeable than she perhaps wanted to be of all the different kinds of knee injuries one could have.

Putting her weight largely on the unaffected left leg, the older witch limped towards her home.

"I think it might be wise to apparate down to my living room. I don't think the stairs will do much good."

She reached for her own wand - tucked away in a special inner pocket of her sweatshirt - but it would take a few moments to get it from that muggle-proof (it made no sense to her to have separate wardrobes for Hogsmeade and London) carrying spot.

Temp groaned as Judy commented on the famous Puddifoot's pastries and hovered over the Muggle Studies Professor as she hobbled a bit on her bandaged leg. In her professional opinion she had done some exceptional spellcasting. The wrapping was tight but there seemed to still be adequate blood flow to the lower appendage, at least from a purely visual perspective. "Someone needs to explain the usefulness of delivery service to our wix brethren,"

"Knees are tricky," She replied - happy to move the conversation on from the local tea shop. She enjoyed their treats, to be sure, but bringing the place up had been an old Healer's trick - small talk tended to take one's focus from their injury, allowing a healer to assess the situation with minimal interference. "So are ankles, wrists and elbows. Pretty much anywhere that hinges, really,"

"Side-along is probably best," Replied the healer in response to Judy's suggestion that they apparate, "You can use my body for support to keep some of the weight off of that leg," Not to mention pain was very distracting - apparating under strained conditions was ill advised as it greatly increased one's chance of splinching. Besides, Tempest wasn't as familiar with the place as Judy, Temp would probably appear atop Judy's television or somewhere else that would be completely mortifying. With side-along apparation, she could lend Judy her strength and Judy could lead them to their destination.

"Don't get me started on elbows," Judy said, though in a good-natured tone. The injury that ultimately ended Carl's quidditch career was in the elbow - what muggle medicine calls a UCL tear.

"Yes, right. Let me put some weight on you."

Judy leaned her body on Temp, then apparated the both of them into her living room. She was quick to set down on the couch, propping up her injured leg on the futon.

"Anything to drink?" she offered, she she used some spellwork to untie her shoelaces and send the sneakers to their place in the closet. "I'm inclined for a nice chardonnay."
