If you've ever met Laurie you're either in love with the guy (platonically speaking, of course) or you hate him (more like love to hate if you ask me). He's got a very dry personality and has no problem filing the awkward silence with random word vomit. FYI.. it's only awkward on your end. He's comfortable in his own skin and can -generally- read the room. He befriends most, so if you've got need for a pal, hit him up. Also beware.. he has no qualms about personal space and will give you the biggest bear hug of your life if he deems you bromance worthy.. manhugs all around...bring it in bro.
Appearance
Standing a bit taller than the average wizard at around 6'3, with Dark hair, brown eyes and a wide stance, Laurie can seem a bit intimidating at first... At least until you catch the typical smile on his face which makes him much more approachable than he appears at first glance. Despite never really having played many sports, Laurie has a naturally athletic build from years of working out, though the workouts were more to do with stress relief than for anything else... at least that's what he tells everyone. The real truth is that he was so clumsy as a huge, lanky teenager that one of his professors took him aside and suggested he do something, anything to get his awkward limbs back into control. He dresses somewhat casually and somewhat fashionably, usually asking for the help of a shopkeeper the second he walks into any establishment, giving his clothes a varying style based on the age of the clerk who helped him on whatever day he was purchasing clothes.
Personality
Laurie makes friends with just about everyone and if he has any enemies, he's not aware of it. He is generally pretty friendly with everyone. He was the type of guy that you high fived in class behind the teachers back when someone made a joke. Laurie is more of a bro-type of personality than anything else. He wants to like everyone and he wants to be liked by everyone. He will put friendships above romance 9 times out of 10. Laurie is pan but as of right now he isn’t so much aware of the fact. He just assumes that ‘yeah, I’m man enough to admit that guy is hot’ but he doesn’t pursue men. Not to say he wouldn't then do some of the chasing if someone (male) hit on him. He’s not a flowers and chocolates kind of guy. He’s never had anything long term. He cares about women and respects them but feelings are hard earned on his end.
History
Though his family has always been historically London based, his parents made the unfortunate mistake of traveling during their last trimester of pregnancy. Not their finest moment, but they say hindsight is 20/20. When his Mum blacked out in the middle of their Moscow sightseeing tour, on a busy street, in plain sight of about a hundred or so muggles, they had no choice but to deliver him in Russia at a local, non-magical hospital. Both his mum and his grandparents on both sides were livid (with the both of them), but in his panic, his Father had not seen a reasonable way to get Merla away from the concerned muggles long enough to get her to magical care or apparate away. Thankfully in the end there were no complications, but the families on both sides did not have much faith in the non-magical healthcare system.
After that very much anticlimactic incident, when Laurie's father receive a job offer from Bulgaria he had little hesitation for making the move, believing albeit incorrectly that since Laurie was born outside of the Hogwarts Bounds, that he was now ineligible to attend. Of course, the matter was not discussed with his wife or extended family, who would have absolutely set the record straight. Between themselves however, they decided the gold was too good for them to pass up and made the jump regardless of his fathers ignorance regarding his son's education. And so.. much to the extended family's chagrin, Laurie did not receive a Hogwarts letter at the ripe age of eleven, but rather an invitation to Durmstrang Institute.
Laurie was sad as a child to realize this, as Hogwarts was often a hot topic during holidays and other family gatherings. He wondered all throughout his childhood which of the four houses he may have been placed into (Hufflepuff for sure) and laughing over the stories that his now retired Great Uncle Artie practically shouted at him about pesky troublemakers within the walls of Hogwarts. He did his best to go off to Durm with a positive attitude and fell in love with the place within the day. Sure, it was much colder than he'd anticipated, and yes.. maybe the instructors and fellow classmates were difficult to understand at first, but for some reason he just saw these weird, little inconveniences as challenges he needed to overcome.
By no means was Laurie at the top of his class, but he did reasonably well, more-so had he actually applied himself a bit more, but then again, who's to say?
Career
After graduation, and only with a barely noticeable accent from years of being surrounded by fellow foreign students and professors (Laurie's primary education was done via homeschooling so he did not pickup much foreign accent from the outside world, emulating his parents was of speaking), Laurie took up a position in Bulgaria as a curse breaker. He took up residence with a large group of past classmates and often partied well past his comfort zone or tolerance. It started to affect his work for a while until his near termination straightened him back out. That and a howler from his Gran. How in the world that old bat had managed to find out was beyond him...
Several months later, on the straight and narrow, he somehow caught the eye of a Veela after a Quidditch match and after a turbulent four months of 'dating' he began to fear that he was more pet than boyfriend. She honestly terrified the hell out of him in his lucid moments but the second he found himself in her presence again, he found himself once again under her spell and unable to break it off with her. Then, one afternoon, when his friend Rhiannon casually mentioned that she was heading back to London, he realized that he too needed to get the hell out of dodge, packing up and moving within hours of his realization, without so much as an owl to any of his roommates.
He showed up at his Gran's door with a trunk and dark circles under her eyes and she took him in no questions asked. A week later, his friend Killian offered him a job at the magical construction firm He'd inherited from his father and he's been there ever since. It's sort of a cool gig and it makes him feel closer to his Grandad, who was in the same line of work before he retired.
New and old construction or additions. Laurie and his crew work alongside architects for commercial or larger scale projects to really make their visions come alive. There's also the occasional repairs, installations or restoration work on older buildings. Acadia and Son's also specializes in building spellwork, making a special effort for those magical residents that need the more unusual types of things done to their homes within Muggle neighborhoods that just can't easily be accomplished by the average non-magical human. Concealment, extensions and much more. (Due to magical regulations, they do not do work on tents or other easily transportable accommodations such as camper vans for example.)
Laurie is still very much learning the ropes for this new gig of his, the whole.. you know.. building things and such. Though having been a former curse-breaker his charmwork is pretty spot on. Turns out, he likes working with his hands.. who knew? Yeah, yeah, a lot of the work (building-wise) can theoretically be done with a simple flick of a wand, but really, where's the craftmanship in that? Also, turns out some of the more complex building spellwork doesn't really work so well if you don't actually have the necessary skillset to begin with... sort of the same way a spell to pack your trunk might be all sorts of chaos if you're a sucky packer when doing it by hand.. so there's that.
But all in all, his skills are improving each and every day. Cruse breaking was certainly a good trade, but he's found that he's much happier with this new, more blue-collar line of work. Crazy, right?
