Nate's ambition in life is personal freedom, and doing whatever he wants. He has a self-destructive streak that includes dropping out of school, hanging with a dangerous crowd, and getting involved in light crime, mainly theft and smuggling. He has been married to Dazmond Wiedman for 7 years. The each come and go as they please, that is, Nate sticking to Knockturn and Dazmond coming and going.
He's arrogant and self-serving most of the time, and feels entitled to what he's able to take. He's not adept in combat, his main skills lying in solving puzzles, escaping and talking his way out of trouble.
Nate's actually quite smart (both book- and street-) but chooses not to apply himself to the standard socially-acceptable measures of success, preferring odd jobs to a high-prestige career. And now, even if he wanted, a growing criminal record might prevent him from trying.
