Skylar Rhiannon Alice Catrin Carstairs, or simply "Sky" is the oldest daughter of the Carstairs-Morgan family. She is a confident, strong-spoken woman with little to no patience for failure and ignorance and a case of severe stubbornness. While generally perfectly composed, if a little rude, there are times when her switch goes off and she will rain fire and brimstone on whatever poor unfortunate soul has managed to anger her. She has a complicated relationship with her younger sister whom she cares for deeply but cannot connect with and a strained, if not completely butchered relationship with her parents, and quite a few of her extended family. For Skylar, there is nothing more sacred than work, and everything, everything else falls in second. | Skylar Rhiannon Alice Catrin Carstairs, or simply "Sky" is the oldest daughter of the Carstairs-Morgan family.
History
The first child of Briallen Carstairs née Morgan and Alphonse Carstairs, Skylar was supposed to be the crown jewel of the Carstairs family. Named Rhiannon for her mother's Welsh lineage, Alice for her father's ancestor, Catrin for the homonymous Welsh poem and, finally, Skylar for no reason whatsoever, Rhiannon has lived most of her life with her family's noose around her neck.
From the moment she was born, Rhia was groomed to become the perfect embodiment of an accomplished, pure-blood young woman. And while pleasing her parents, always earned her praise and gifts she did not need, as young girl, she continuously felt like the prize-steed meant to bring fortune and fame to her family.
Childhood was a rather tedious affair for her, half spent between lessons and constant comparisons between herself and her numerous, accomplished cousins and other relatives. She wasn't a particularly chatty or playful child, but she was pleasant and polite, despite having preferred a traipse through the countryside to a social gathering with her relatives.
It was a year before her departure to Hogwarts that her younger sister was born, and hope that her parents' focus would shift to little Rosie came. But it was for naught, as her baby sister seemed to present little to no interest to her parents. Once enrolled at Hogwarts, however, Rhia felt she could finally breathe. But it wasn't necessarily the case. For freedom came with the price of keeping her folks satisfied in the form of keeping ridiculously high grades.
She showed no patience for theoretical subjects, but she discovered early that she had a way with creatures and beings that came almost natural. She wasn't half bad in Potions and Herbology, but it was subjects like History and Astronomy that her showing the temper she would grow into as an adult. There was one other little guilty pleasure that made life easier and that was Quidditch. She was beautiful on a broom, and made her house proud as a Chaser for many years.
She was polite and sociable, as her parents instructed, despite never having much wish for conversation. And while she may have been liked well enough by others, she didn't have many friends, acquaintances, yes, but friends— Sure, she had her cousins which one might argue that she was a little closer to, but it wasn't as if she could call anyone a true friend. She was rather popular, did well in her classes, rode a broom famously, came from a rich family with quite the name.. One might say she had it all. But the constant pressure, the expectations, the fact that her entire life was fitted into her parent's little stencil—Rhia... No, Skylar was made for more than just that.
Her parents would've liked to see her in International Magical Cooperation, but she had kept her options open. It was in her final year at Hogwarts that Skylar decided enough was enough. Her life was her own to live and without even the smallest of signs of her change, she would announce her decision by going for five N.E.W.T.s with Care of Magical Creatures, Potions, Herbology, Transfiguration and Charms, with one specific goal in mind: the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. She loved creatures and beings, couldn't see herself doing anything but and her mother and father would just have to find a way to deal with that and get off her back.
Once she graduated, Skylar dropped all pretenses of being a puppet for her family. With years of pent-up frustration, she would've liked to cut-off all connections to her parents, some of her Carstairs relatives and more than a handful of Morgans, but there was the matter of a few favorite cousins and, most importantly, her baby sister... She hadn't been there to see her grow up, being tucked away at Hogwarts, she never quite managed to become very close to her, but Rosie adored her and reluctant to admit it, Skylar was very fond of her. She was afraid her sister would suffer the same fate, seeing she was eager to please her parents. So she gave her conditions to her family, she would do it her way or no way and took off for the world.
For four years, Skylar visited various countries with communities of veelas, goblins, vampires, hags, giants, house-elves and werewolves. While her main goal was the study of beings by interacting directly with beings - well, at least those that weren't keen on immediately biting her head off. But, during her longer stays she also apprenticed under various wizarding naturalists, even becoming relatively fluent in Gobbledegook. it was the latter, as well her fundamental beliefs that beings are in no way inferior to wizards, that landed her a job in the Goblin Liaison Office upon her return on her twenty third birthday.
For two years she did her job diligently, earning herself a name in the Department as being hardworking and efficient. She was ambitious and she had grand plans and wished that maybe one day, the wizarding world would treat all magical species with the respect they deserved that pushed her further and further. While dedicated to her job, she still continued to study and publish various articles supporting the equality in status of beings to wizards and continued to push for the inclusion of Centaurs and Merpeople in the classification by negotiating with them herself. But it was her ease in her interactions with beings, her respect for them and, embarrassingly, her familial associations that eventually put her in the spotlight for the position of Head of Being Divison.
Regardless how she may have come into her position, for the past half year she has been working to bring order into a department that has been overlooked and inefficient for quite some time, dedicating almost every moment of her life to her job and to truly earning her position.
