Never having had to work particularly hard to get what he wanted in life, Carter has become rather jaded and naive. He’s never gotten used to the fanfare associated with life on the Chudley Cannons, but the attention hasn’t pushed Carter to become much more cultured. Fangirls have christened him a heartthrob, and his shy, coy response to this has only heightened their desires. Carter’s impulsive, silly nature sometimes takes him down a regrettable path: he’s terrible at saving money, can’t stay in a committed relationship, and has little desire to grow as a person. Regardless, Carter has a heart of gold and would bravely defend anyone who rightly needed it.
Physical Description
“Effort” is not a suitable word to include when describing the appearance of Carter Beatleby. His favorite clothes still have the crumbs of snacks eaten during his sixth year at Hogwarts; his hair seems bewitched to grow in different directions; his beard grows in patches all over his face. Only recently did Carter lose the baby fat that earned him the popular nickname “Moose,” which has followed him into adulthood. After months of rigorous training for his spot on the Cannons, muscle replaced the chubbiness that his sisters liked to tauntingly pinch. The growth spurt he went through in his late teens didn’t hurt, either. Towering in at 6’2”, Cart has gotten used to looking at the tops of people’s heads.
Carter has a warm smile and brown eyes that give him a teddy bear-like quality that he kept, even after he lost weight. He has an undeniable friendliness about him, which he emits without even talking. He has a winning smile and provides the warmest hugs, and with the fame that his career his brought him it made him beloved amongst quidditch spectators.
Personality Description
Being someone who was able to live out a lifelong dream of playing for a professional sports team, Carter is normally in very high spirits. He spreads his cheer through a charming smile and a goofy personality. His competitive edge comes paired with a desire for legitimacy. Carter wants to win but only if it’s by the rules. He hones his skills with the determination of a hardened perfectionist -- but in any other area he could care less. Securing his childhood dreams has not helped Carter’s maturity level, but it does show off his tenacity and discipline. He works hard at the things he’s best at, and has the tendency to slack off everywhere else. Ever a mama’s boy, he is barely capable of doing his own cooking and cleaning.
The time he spent as a chubby kid didn’t gain him access to the It Crowd, even after he proved himself as an apt chaser for the Gryffindor team. Instead he was encouraged toward a passion for comic books, chess, and other ‘nerdy’ enterprises that developed an enthusiasm matched only by the most hardcore geeks. It also provided him with thick skin and an ability to perceive things uncritically, albeit simply. Carter likes it when things are calm and fair, right down to his preference for peaceful lakes over raging oceans.
Life as a professional quidditch player does not come without pressure, and Cart is no stranger to it. Winning is, of course, the favored end for every game, and losing is detrimental. The weight of these outcomes is much heavier than his days at Hogwarts, but Carter manages his stress through horseplay: irresponsible and immature moments that lack thinking or consequence. Carter keeps things legal, at least in the sense that the mischief he gets into is relatively harmless.
History
Nothing spectacular had happened in the Beatleby family until Lisa and Norm’s son Carter flew around the backyard one summer’s day. None of the muggles knew quite how to react, not knowing that they were muggles and that Carter was a wizard. Instead they pegged it on Carter’s natural athleticism and called it a day.
It wasn’t until several years later that they finally received their explanation. The eldest Beatleby child was magical -- it made so much more sense now, and his sister Natalie assured her older brother that his flight had been a symptom of this all along. They should have known. Carter was admitted to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, which after some research on his father’s part, they came to discover was a very prestigious and highly regarded academy. So off Carter was -- into this mysterious, magical world.
The ways of the Wizarding World continue to mystify Carter to this day, and his family still marvels at his ability to perform spells and ride around on broomsticks -- even nearly twenty years after the astounding discovery. Throughout his years at Hogwarts, he was always amped to go back home and share the stories of his learning with his family. He explained to them that everything had to be kept hush-hush, but within the Beatleby clan he was a legend right from the get-go. They had no idea what it was to be a Gryffindor and not a Hufflepuff, but they were impressed and proud of whatever went on in Carter’s wizarding life.
Carter loved sports from the moment his father handed him a ball, so naturally the idea of quidditch peaked his interest. However, his desire to play chaser raised eyebrows among his fellow students and even a few staff members. Carter was a big boy, had grown to his full 6’2” by the time he was thirteen years old. Chasers were supposed to be quick and agile -- they all recommended that he switch his focus to becoming a beater. They pointed out that he even had a good last name for a beater.
But Carter was determined, and after four years of committed practice, he proved his worth as a chaser for the Gryffindor team. The remaining years at Hogwarts consisted of happy wins and devastating losses, but quidditch team memories were at the cherished forefront of his time at school.
In his sixth year, he was scouted by a national quidditch team association. The pressure to make the team was high, but the prospect of another laborious year of academia was enough to shake the stress from Carter’s shoulders and make him perform brilliantly. He was the captain that year, beating out students who had been on the team longer -- but the team (almost) unanimously agreed that he had the most potential to “make it.”
And make it he did. Carter was drafted into professional quidditch play starting at age seventeen, and has spent very little time doing anything besides that. His focus and drive impressed international quidditch team scouts, and soon Carter was a player in that division. During this time a smile hardly ever left Carter’s face -- until he broke his left arm performing a complicated move during a painstakingly competitive game. (He very badly lost an arm-wrestling match to Jules Deville, who promptly had to patch him up.)
Worried that his career in quidditch was over, Carter panicked and became sluggish. His ambition was dwindling and gloom was mounting -- at age 26, Carter felt that his life was already over. It wasn’t until his sister Natalie, yet again, provided the assurance that he needed. Now a doctor, his sister supplemented his magical treatment with muggle ones. Soon Carter was on the steam train to recovery, and within a year he had regained full arm strength. Oh, to be young.
Carter is now six months back in the game, proudly playing for the Chudley Cannons. Throughout his years at school and beyond, the Cannons had been one of Carter’s top picks for favorite team (he was never quite able to decide which was his favorite, that is until he found his place on the Cannons’ team). Rejuvenated by his successful redemption, Carter feels as though he could be reaching his peak -- and he might be alright with it, if things stay even half as good.
