Physical Description:At precisely six feet and one quarter of an inch, Nathaira Spectre measures up almost as tall as her younger brothers - although all three still go through life with the impression of looking up to her rather than down. Her hair, once auburn and typical of the family, is now worn a golden blonde in an effort to work through a feeling of stagnancy in her personal life.
There is a warm, immediately welcoming prettiness about Nathaira. It is easy to trust her on instinct and she has a smile so utterly charming in its vulnerability that few would care to see its reverse.
Nathaira has a prudent, old fashioned sense of dress that belies her upbringing amongst elderly Spectre women. Sometimes it looks as if though she has stepped right out of a different era; she emanates a sense of yesteryear and nostalgia - all with a sense of pragmatism. Rolled up sleeves, tied back locks, a countenance better lit by sunlight than candlelit dinners. Motherhood has suited her very well indeed.
Personality Description: In spite of her appearances, Nathaira is a most contemporary witch in her attitude towards gender roles and Magizoology. If she is at all well known, it is for her extremely vocal opinions in the Scottish Journal of Magizoology - where she advocates ethical conduct in the treatment of all magical creatures and writes a column encouraging young witches to enter the field. She is a very capable, cutting writer with a professional writing style.
Nathaira's demeanour in-person is less intimidating or rather, not at all, if you catch her on the right side of a subject. Much like her youngest brother, she's not especially judgemental in her social interactions and knows her way around entertaining guests. Nobody throws a good party so well as her.
As her parents are publicly retired (Papa Spectre is still head editor at the Journal) Nathaira has run of their estate on the outskirts of Edinburgh. She does this with authoritative and practical flair - she takes absolutely no nonsense. Crude, drunk men might be the norm at family reunions but she
will burn your tongue if you cross a line.
Often her way of effortlessly sweeping through little problems can be infuriating for other people. Nathaira is wise, but not wise enough to know that she doesn't have all the answers to everything. When she is emotionally wounded, all the world goes to hell and she is nearly inconsolable, though this is a rare occurrence. She does not like to worry her family and it is frustrating for other people when she purposefully avoids discussing her own problems.
As is the case, other people's issues are much easier to deal with. Plenty of Nathaira's relatives and friends go to her for advice or comfort. Many wish she would ask the same of them.
History: William and Katrine Spectre had their first daughter in the summer of the 1972, while Edinburgh city was experiencing a most unconventionally warm season. The estate garden was pungent with the scent of flowers and the couple would often spend their afternoons laying down outdoors, having picnics or simply whiling away their time. When Katrine was nearly bitten by a wayward snake (none knew how it had come to be there) they took it as a sign - their firstborn daughter was named
Nathaira. She was nothing at all like her namesake, and so William took to calling her
Knox instead. Little Knox enjoyed her childhood terribly - even through the theatrics of her parents' temporary separation and the arrival of her illegitimate brother, after the twins. Of course she was quite young then and hardly knew what was going on but the family noted that she welcomed her new brothers with total felicity.
The four Spectre children got along well enough. Nathaira watched over her brothers carefully but she was just as likely to challenge them, always a competitive and lively sister. She was particularly fond of her youngest brother, Balfour. He wandered off the most and she took it upon herself to ensure that he didn't accidentally kill himself by toppling into the estate well (there was a dreaded creature at the bottom, according to clan legend).
HOGWARTSAs a Hufflepuff, Knox excelled in her studies but chose to specialise quite early on in education. She knew from a young age that she wanted to follow in her father's footsteps and any popularity she maintained as a student was tinged with admiration for her knack with magical creatures. Even so, she was better on the academic side of things. Her mind worked in such a way that she might have been better suited to Astronomy or History of Magic, or even Potions. Nothing, however, could atone for passion.
Nathaira knew that if she had a passion for something and she could get along reasonably well with it, then everything else would only be dull by comparison.
After she graduated from Hogwarts she went straight into working with her father, who travelled across the country cataloguing magical creatures for the Scottish Journal of Magizoology. This was an excellent grounding, at least for the first three or so years.
ADULTHOODNathaira took some time away from her family when she went to work as a Magizoologist at the Ministry of Magic for nearly eight years. It was during these years that she saw her brothers grow up, and leave home to pursue their own interests abroad. Of her twin brothers Corgmag and Goraidh, the former travelled to the east to occupy a position in Japan whilst the later began work on the Spectre Farm north of the Galloway Forest. They both would come home frequently enough to touch base and attend reunions when they could.
Balfour, easily her favourite, disappeared and only returned two or three times a year. He kept up a good correspondence and she understood by reading through the lines that he was not having an easy time of it in spite of learning a good deal. In the lead up to the Battle of Hogwarts Nathaira wrote to her brother and advised him not to return (little did she know that he had no intention of it either way).
Friends and family were lost in the conflict. Cormag and Goraidh had been badly injured but neither for the worse, and she herself had remained at the estate as a lone watchman. At least one Spectre to hold the fort.
Nathaira left the Ministry when she was 28 years old, and engaged to marry a Londoner who she had met through a mutual friend. She returned to Edinburgh and resumed work at the Journal - a year later, the engagement was broken off. She was miserable, but found solace in work. For a while it seemed as if though there were no sounds in the Spectre household but that of her scratching quill or clicking typewriter. The Scottish witch has since been through many long term relationships, some more disastrous than others, most of them borne with patience. She remembers her promotions at the Journal better than she does many of the men in her life.
Five years ago Nathaira experienced a miscarriage - she was in love with her then-partner, a fellow Magizoologist, but her grief at losing a child three months along was deep. They did not last and he left shortly thereafter. Balfour Spectre came straight home as soon as he heard. Nobody outside of the immediate family had been informed. He had stayed at the estate for three months - neither of them spoke a word to anybody else during this time. Several months later, following Cormag's wedding in Japan, Balfour came to live permanently in Great Britain. Knox initially thought he had done this because of her but now understands differently, and is simply glad to have him within easy reach once more.
Nathaira was engaged to Unspeakable
Carmichael Rosier for many months when they haid their first child, Cameron Rosier, in March 2011. Cam Rosier was born mute, a Rosier family curse, which brought much grief to them - but they persevered with the help of loved ones, learning to love more vastly than before. The couple married in August 2011.
Describe your job duties and how you go about them: As a former Senior Editor at the Scottish Journal of Magizoology, Nathaira is an occasional contributor of academic articles. Her special knowledge of magical creatures in the Highlands means that she is sometimes called upon by her old colleagues at the Ministry for consultation. Balfour sometimes sends for her when he needs a second opinion on something local - or when he needs to reorient his moral compass.
Elaborate on your expertise in your field: Nathaira achieved her NEWTS in History of Magic, Astronomy, Charms, and Care of Magical Creatures. She began her experience in the field by training as a Magizoologist with her father whilst interning at the Scottish Journal of Magizoology. Afterwards, Knox went on to be an official Magizoologist on level four at the Ministry of Magic. She gained many friends and connections while here, many who continue to keep in touch with her. Working on level four mostly entailed fieldwork in the United Kingdom although she would sometimes spend months away in other countries to work with foreign Magizoologists who handled magical creatures imported to their shores.
Sum up your character in one paragraph: Nathaira Spectre is mother, sister, wife and consultant magizoologist. She and her Unspeakable husband live on the Spectre Estate with her brother, Balfour, and his husband Johann. The two couples run the large manor competently, having filled it with the warmth of family and the chaos of growing children. Nathaira gives good advice and is adept at reading omens.
