Writer’s Block:

Hi, I’m Michael. I’ve been a member of Absit Omen since its inception, though for much of that time I was inactive. I currently play the following primary characters: Minerva McGonagall, Tempest Sage, Elysia Hughes, Elijah Grimlish, Mathieu Vaillancourt, Pandora Puddifoot, Chadwick Blish, and Jacqueline Devereux. My secondary characters are Maxen Whitman and Tipper the House-elf. A few of my characters are deceased: Gawain Robards, Charlie Robards, and William Smythe. I have retired Paetyn Harper and Henry MacLeod. I've also retired Corby Gent, who may be up for adoption if the character creator is interested. I am over 13 years of age and have read the code of conduct (numerous times, actually). Elysia is a primary character.

Physical Description:

Standing at a firm 5’9, Elysia has little issue looking most of her peers in the eye. Due to her athletic nature, she holds very little body fat and has a slim build. Her complexion is fair, and her body is simply covered in freckles. The more she’s in the sun, the darker the freckles get. At sixteen, her body has finally started to develop curves, though her most stunning features are on her face.

Elysia has startling blue eyes, and lashes most women would kill for. Her nose is thin and petite. Her brows are perfectly sculpted, and are most normally raised in a mirthful manner. She has plump, full lips, with dazzling white teeth. When she smiles, which is quite often indeed, her huge smile lights up her face. Her hair is blonde, long, and curly.

She can be most commonly found in robes of varying shades and colors. Growing up in a magical household, she never learned the fascination with jeans and the like, though she does own a few muggle outfits, just to fit in when not at school.

Personality Description:

Elysia is the complete opposite of her elder sister and takes after her big brother. Though half-veela, Elysia has never allowed her beauty to run her life, and would rather be out having fun in the dirt than filing her nails or doing her hair. She dislikes the way people look at her sometimes, with envy or longing, and it’s given her a bit of a complex about the way people act: do they like her for who she is, or just how she looks?

The Hufflepuff as always been a badger in all senses of the word: she’s kind and loyal, friendly and open to new ideas. She loves the outdoors and shines in hands-on magics, such as herbology, potions, and care of magical creatures. She’s extremely sporty, and is a major fan of Quidditch. She isn’t one to completely disregard rules, but nor is she a teacher’s pet. She has little qualms about breaking rules if she finds them silly or inconsequential, but would never directly disobey an order from a professor.

She has high ambitions in life and wants to either work with animals after graduation or become a potions master, both high goals. She works hard and is extremely determined, once she’s set her mind to something, there’s very little that can deter her from achieving it. Growing up in a magical household, she knows fairly little about muggles, but doesn’t allow that to hold her back, compensating by signing up for muggle studies for an elective. She’s agile and quick, and can at times have a rather smart mouth (though she seems to save such instances for those she truly despises).

It takes quite a bit to get on Elysia’s bad side, but once you’re there, she holds a grudge until the end of time… or at least until you do something that is redeemable in her eyes.

History:

Elysia Adela Hughes was certainly an unexpected baby. She’s the youngest child of Ianto and Ruzena Hughes, and there is a thirteen year gap between her and her nearest aged sibling, Flynn. She was born and raised in London, along with her parents and two siblings. Though there was such a large age gap between the children, Elysia never had issues bonding with her family, they’re a tight-knit group of oddballs, but they love each other.

At the ripe old age of five, Elysia became an auntie. The eldest child, Audrey, had a bouncing baby boy, Linus, and Elysia doted on him. Eventually, Audrey and Linus moved out of the family home and into a small cottage in Hogsmeade, and with Flynn living in his own flat, Elysia was left alone with her parents. She found, quickly, that she missed her family, but there was little to be done about the fact, and soon enough, her Hogwarts letter arrived.

Though most Hughes were sorted into Gryffindor, Elysia found that like her brother and sister, she was an exception. Audrey had been a Slytherin, Flynn a Ravenclaw… and little Elysia was a Hufflepuff. Her first couple years at Hogwarts went by in a blur. She made friends easily, did decently well in her classes, and was generally well liked by all.

It was in her third year that things became interesting. She chose muggle studies and care of magical creatures for her electives, and finally gained a spot on the Hufflepuff Quidditch Team. She rode well, and was in love with the wizardsport. Last year, after sitting her OWLs, she realized that she was indeed a good student. Perhaps not the best in her year, she’d never be a prefect or Head Girl, but she was talented and smart, and that’s all that really mattered to her.

This year she’s continued with her studies and kept her name far from the Goblet of Fire. Her nephew has started his education and Elysia makes it her sacred duty to watch over him when necessary, and fuss over him when it’s not. Her cousin, Adelebert, has recently come to the castle to teach transfiguration. Though classes are difficult, she’s content with her averages and is looking forward to the rest of term.

How do you fit into your house?:

Like most Hufflepuffs, Elysia is hard-working, loyal, and kind. Due to her veela heritage, she has very little tolerance for discrimination and doesn’t hold blood status against anyone for any reason. She’s very much an outdoorsy person, and excels with more hands-on magics.

Provide a short summary of your character:

Elysia is a kind and generous Hufflepuff. She’s skilled at flying and at most hands-on magics, including Herbology, Potions, and Care of Magical Creatures. She is extremely family oriented and would do anything for those she loves. She has a fear of people only liking her because of how she looks and not who she is as a person, so at times she overcompensates with a large and boisterous personality.

Elysia has been a member of the Hufflepuff Quidditch team for three consecutive years. She's a talented flier and has natural leadership qualities.

What Do You Think the Most Important Aspect of This Job Is:?

Running practices, try-outs, and facilitating matches are big duties of the post. Helping ensure all interested members have a chance to play is another. The MOST important aspect of the job, however, is to help keep Quidditch fun for everyone!

Tell a Story From Your Past That Has Proven Your Mettle:

 
The day was unseasonably warm, sweat dripped from Elysia’s brow as she dug her heels in the soft earth of the Quidditch Pitch. Before her was stood twenty or so Hufflepuff students, all eager to make their spot on the team, a team that only held seven spots. It could be difficult telling others no, especially when they had talent, but only the best of the best could make it to the big leagues, and she was certain that her team would be the most talented of all. If any student were picked to play professionally this year, they would come from Hufflepuff house.

“Alright guys, welcome to tryouts!” She called above the chattering badgers. They all quieted down almost immediately. She wiped the sweat from her brow and continued, “First off, if you’re a first year, might as well clear out now. I’m glad you love flying, but when a sixth year Slytherin comes barreling down the pitch, you’ll wish you had never been born. Come back in a couple years,” She paused as a couple young tykes left good-naturedly.

“Now, everyone else, up in the air; I’d like to see how everyone flies. Take a few laps around the pitch, and then I’ll let out the bludgers. See how well you can dodge them while flying around the pitch. No beaters to help you out, it can be quite a challenge,” As the rest of the crowd mounted their brooms and took off, Elysia pulled her hair back from her eyes and followed their progress with her eyes.

This was going to be the best season yet.

How and where did they learn/hone this ability?:

Elysia has just recently realized that her natural charm might be a bit less natural than she once suspected. Boys (and some girls) were always fawning over her, treating her with respect, and flirting vivaciously for her attentions. Elysia had always chocked that up to her fantastic Hufflepuff personality - after all, who could be more charming that a badger? Certainly not the slimy serpents or the egotistical eagles. Heck, even the loyal lions couldn't hold a candle to the badgers - but lately she's started to realize that maybe the family trait did not skip over her.

What do they use this ability for and how does it influence their life?

Though completely unaware to Elysia herself, the witch's veela charm helps her to keep attentions focused on her - so that when she says something, people tend to listen more closely than they would normally. Her beauty is beyond that of many - due to her heritage, and it gives Elysia a complex. She does NOT want to be the person that everyone wants to be with simply because of who her ancestors might be, or because of powers she can't control.

Without her knowledge, it has helped keep her teammates in line on the pitch, and it's very easy for her to get her way in most cases - especially when it's a male she needs something from.

Describe what happens to your character during and after using this ability, as well as any effects it has on others:

Very little happens outwardly when Elysia uses her gift. Perhaps those that look closely when she's pouring on the charm might see a bit more beauty in the world than was there only moments before - but Elysia's body doesn't change at all. It effects her self-esteem, making her wonder if people like her for who she is, or simply because her charm makes them like her. Others find their inhibitions lowered and their wills a bit more malleable when she chooses them to use her special ability on.
