Writing Sample:Show your character in a scene that illustrates their best and worst aspects of their personality. Include action, dialog and thought.Isaac read the same sentence for the fifth time before setting the book aside with a frustrated sigh. The visit with his parents earlier that day had not gone well. He spent most of the time watching his mother work herself to exhaustion to care for his father. Leaning his head back against the chair he pinched the bridge of his nose as the memory brought on a bit of a headache.
He had tired to talk to her, to convince her that his father needed more help then she could provide. That had not gone well at all. Instead of her taking his advice, and the offer to pay for some sort of assistance, she had grown defensive. Sometimes she was too stubborn for her own good, and he played the memory again in his mind, wishing he had been able to say something to convince her.
Sitting at the kitchen table, Isaac was waiting for his mother’s return, fixing them both a cup of tea. His father had been taking his afternoon nap, when he awoke demanding something…Isaac was unsure what exactly. That of course was after she had done everything else for the sick man that afternoon short of chewing his food for him. She had barely sat down for more then a minute since Isaac’s arrival, and he suspected it was like that throughout the day.
She came back into the kitchen, and he noted the dark circles under her eyes, and the way she carried herself. This was not the energetic woman he had grown up with, the one who was slowly fading away with each passing visit. It made him sad to see her wither before his eyes much as his father was.
“He’s resting again,” she said softly, nearly falling into the chair across from him.
“Mom,” he began slowly, preparing himself for whatever reaction she would have, “have you considered getting some help around here?”
She noticeably tensed in her seat, and Isaac instantly regretting bringing it up. Someone had to though; he had to know they were both taken care of. If she suddenly collapsed in exhaustion it wouldn’t do anyone any good.
“I only ask, because I was thinking of hiring someone to come a couple days a week,” he continued quickly. “To lend you a helping hand…you know, give you a bit of a break from time to time.”It had gone down hill from there. She had instantly refused to listen to any more of his idea, and the rest of the afternoon passed in relative silence. She of course had become angry and he had instantly backed down. Closing his eyes for a moment he mentally cursed himself for not insisting she listen. She was clearly going to make herself ill.
With another sigh, he picked up the book again. He didn’t want to dwell and he had to finish his lesson plans for the week. Starting over for the sixth time, he attempted to read the passage before him.
