Werewolf Safe House

From Absit Omen Lexicon

A werewolf safe house is any venue approved by the Ministry of Magic to be safe and effective at containing a werewolf's full moon transformation.

There is no cost to the werewolf to use a Ministry safe house and nor is there a cost associated with establishing a private safe house.

Categories of safe houses

As detailed in the 2012 Inquiry into Safe House Security [1], there are four types of safe house.

Werewolf Wing safe house

The Ministry of Magic's Werewolf Wing has a corridor of rooms dedicated to this purpose. If overbooked, some werewolves must transform in the less comfortable cells.

Public Safe houses

Public safe houses are run by the Ministry and can be set up in any building suitably repurposed.

Each safe house has a register and individual rooms. Werewolves may show up at any safe house without an appointment. The safe house attendants do not have access to the Werewolf Registry, and submit the register to the Werewolf Wing the next morning.

Safe houses are often located in countrysides of isolated areas, such as Dumfriesshire Werewolf Safe House. They might appear to be roadside inns from the outside, and utilise a similar check-in system.

Safe house rooms/cells are generally bare and reinforced. Werewolves often choose to check-in their wands to avoid damage.

As of February 2012, an Auror or Auror-Trainee is posted at each Ministry safe house in addition to the two or more attendants.

Private safe houses

Private organizations and individuals can also request approval for their own safe houses, which are subject to unscheduled inspections - detailed in Ministry Regulation WW-2947☾-⋋ Dec 2011 - On the Case.

Individuals can construct their own safe room which must be approved and routinely inspected by the Ministry of Magic. All safe houses must provide check-in records for all werewolves who use the facility.

Azakban Prison cells

Azkaban has its own safe house facilities were are overseen by the Werewolf Wing (in theory).

Werewolf Capture Unit cells

Not technically a safe house, the Werewolf Capture Unit has its own holding cells for detaining werewolves and suspected werewolves and these are distinct from the transformation rooms in both comfort and purpose.

Ministry Safe house Attendants

The Werewolf Wing employs part time safe house attendants to staff the public safe houses. The qualifications are few and the pay is okay for a once-a-month overnight shift.

Privacy

The Werewolf Registry is confidential, and safe house attendants do not have access to the registry. Werewolves must sign in at the desk upon arrival. At then end of each full moon, safe house sign-in books are cross-checked with the Registry by the Werewolf Wing. In recent years, the Werewolf Wing has documented discrepancies in these records, such as false names and duplicate names. [3]

Capacity

According to the 2012 Inquiry into Safe House Security [4], there is sufficient capacity to serve every werewolf in Britain and Ireland on each full moon.
