Veela Heritage Preservation Society

From Absit Omen Lexicon

Overview

The Veela Heritage Preservation Society is a private organization dedicated to the survival of Veela lore and traditions, and successful integration of Veelas into human society. As ancestral grounds slowly disappear, the Society strives to create new lives for those who have been displaced, yet preserve important cultural aspects of their old ones; with more and more sisters marrying and having children with Wizards and Witches – or growing up ignorant of their heritage – it is more important than ever to see that it survives.

Headquarters are located in London.

History

The Society is relatively young. As a response to their dwindling numbers and an increasing amount of self-loathing among their part-human sisters, it was founded in 1995 by several other women of varying age and backgrounds—yet a similar mind. On one cool summer night – as they had many nights before – they convened to share stories, songs and dances both new and old, as their mothers and their mothers had in lands far away. No matter where they had come from, their race remained rooted in a love for music and beauty—which were, after all, the very heart and soul of their magic.

But that night soon proved different. After more and more reports of self-suppression and self-hatred were shared by members of the group, they grew worried about what that might mean for them as a whole. A denial of self was a rejection of their very race, and they were already facing adversity from hostile forces; they didn't need it from their own sisters, too.

And so on June 20, 1995, the Veela Heritage Preservation Society was officially formed.

Services

To assist in integration and to encourage practice of Veela traditions and magic, the Society offers a number of services including, but not limited to:

  • Finding housing. Until more permanent lodgings can be found, members may turn to the Society for temporary ones.
  • Securing suitable employment. Music, dancing, and theater are the popular choices among members, but when gigs fall through different professions are carefully considered.
  • Managing finances. Although actual financial assistance is limited (since they largely rely on private donations), assistance in managing one's finances is wholeheartedly offered.
  • Handling professional contracts. While hardly a worker's union, the Society takes great pride in protecting and drawing up contracts for its members from those who may exploit them. Prospective clients and employers may be vetted before recommendations are made.
  • Overseeing education in Veela lore, music, traditions, and magic. One of the primary objectives of the Society. Open house seminars, workshops and exhibitions are offered.
  • Offering counselling/a support network. One of the most important problems the Society faces is psychological—identity issues, insecurities, even self-loathing. To combat this, the Society works to help members overcome their issues and to provide a support network for them to turn to.

At Absit Omen

Idara Whitman, one of the founders, is currently spokeswoman for the Society. She uses her connections to find jobs and housing for Veelas, or any part-Veela who seeks assistance. Ruzena Hughes – a bonafide ambassador for the government – liaisons between humans and Veelas for a living.

Membership

Membership is free, but it helps know someone since they do not openly advertise and there is a polite expectation of monthly donations and/or participation in fundraisers.

Public Perception

Like many private social organizations, the Society faces both praise and scrutiny for its image, mission, and (perceived) agenda.

How to Get Involved

Who?

Veelas, half-Veelas, part-Veelas—politicians, conservationists, socialites, human sympathizers and supremacists. Even Beings of other species! Anyone who may have a stake, interest, or distaste for the Society and its values. The Society continues to look for new members and allies, but alienates almost as much as it charms.
