Sweden
Sweden, officially the Kingdom of Sweden, is a Scandinavian country in Northern Europe. Sweden borders Norway and Finland, and is connected to Denmark by a bridge-tunnel across the Øresund.
Sweden is the third largest country in the European Union by area, with a total population of about 9.5 million. Sweden has a low population density with the population mostly concentrated to the southern half of the country. Sweden's capital city is Stockholm, which is also the largest city. Since the early 19th century Sweden has been at peace and has avoided war.
Magical Culture
Witches and wizards born or living in Sweden generally attend Durmstrang.
Sweden is famous for its short-snout dragon. Margo Amherst came to Sweden to study it.
"The Swedish Short Snout is from Sweden. It tends to live in wild, uninhabited areas- it's not very people friendly, because it isn't used to having anyone to answer to but itself. It's usually a silvery-blue in hue, and its flames are also bright blue. It is a particularly dangerous dragon." [1]
Each summer there is an annual international broom racing festival.
Sweden has produced the inventor of the Mostly Portable Expandable House, from Tyr Brunn's family.
Ylva Maras lived for a decade in Stockholm with her family after being brought up in Herrang.
"We lived in the small village of Herrang in Sweden. My parents were wealthy magical folk both of them, and lived remotely by choice. My father worked in finance and my sisters and I were raised by our mother. They were strict, but country life gave us a good deal of space. I attended a small community magical school in the house of a local old sorceress." [2]
Adam Sugarbee, besotted with Charlotte St. James died in Sweden as a result of a malfunctioning floo fire.
In the underworld, Taras Strelnikov operated circles in Sweden.
Drammes Apotheke operate a number of apothecaries in the country. Elixa Mordent was a manager of the branch near to the Institute for several years until the end of 2009.
Frolich Institute of Wizarding Medicine
In Smolen (Småland) the Frolich Institue has specialist healers. Jan Friedson, father of Freya Jansdotter was bitten by a werewolf and sent there to be treated. Freya's mother, Patricia Woodbridge was serving an internship as healer in Venoms and Toxicology at the time.
Werewolves are confined at the Frolich Institute each full moon. In approximately 1997 Jan Friedson broke loose during a full moon and was fatally injured. The Institute admitted fault and paid compensation.
Elixa Mordent studied to be a healer between 1995 and 1999 at the Institute, but didn't pass her final exams and left without completing. Her parents James Mordent and Violetta Mordent nee Duerr are still healers there specialising in the treatment of werewolves.
