Rory Murdock

From Absit Omen Lexicon

Physical Description

With a prominent forehead, strong chin, and long face, Rory looks like the unholy offspring of a Clydesdale and a curious neanderthal.

Personality

One's first impression of Rory is often that he is surly and churlish-- he is not the best at first impressions. A bit shy, his silence in the presence of new people is usually read as rude or distant. However, once Rory is comfortable in your presence, you'll find that he is quick to let out a loud, deafening, booming laugh. He has never been one to shy away from physical confrontations, which got him into plenty of trouble when he was a student at Hogwarts. He has put just as many people in hospital as he has been placed into hospital due to bar duels gone poorly. He is not the best dueler, so when magic is involved he does not have the upper hand. Muggle-style brawling is more his style.

He values personal space and privacy, and does not take kindly to strangers who violate it. However, friends and family are welcome to invade his space all they like-- they have earned that privilege. If you are greeted with a bone-crushing hug or are invited on 2:00 AM pasta dates, you have truly made it as a friend. He is a fun drinking buddy, though tequila--and most other liquors-- make his clothes fall off. Rory is a drunk stripper, and many a garment has made its way into the lost and found. Rory has a tendency to make drunken promises. He does his best to hold true to them while sober unless they're absolutely ridiculous.

He has a soft spot for children, wants to be a father one day-- definitely wants to adopt. As he has entered his thirties, he is starting to feel the pressure from his family to get married and have kids. However, it is also not something that he wants to rush.

Doran has a sense of humor-- he likes to lie for fun, just to see if people believe him. Sometimes he claims that his height is from a giant ancestor, despite the fact that he is a muggleborn. Those who know Rory well are the first to pick up on his lies and call him out on it. At sporting events, he is quick to join in on any and all chanting with a booming voice that suits his stature. He loudly supports the Irish National Quidditch team, but he also supports the Kenmare Kestrels. His favorite varies depending on the day.

Rory is heavily anti-purist. He holds some level of resentment to those who are pureblooded--particularly those who were adults during the Second Wizarding War. However, he has made friends with those who are purebloods who don't hold purist ideals.

History

Doran Néall Murdock was born to two young parents-- his mother was sixteen when he was born. When he was four years old, he was the ringbearer at his parents' small wedding. This is one of his earliest memories. Contrary to the popular narrative regarding teen parents, his parents are still together to this day, and did their very best to provide for him and his two younger brothers. However, money was always tight growing up. His mother worked as a bartender, jumping from job to job. His father was a janitor.

Rory attended the same muggle school as his brothers until one day, a representative from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry came to explain to his parents that he was a wizard. They were skeptical at first and reluctant to let their son attend some sort of mystical school in a mysterious location. After many sit-down talk with Hogwarts officials later, his parents finally relented. With Hogwarts' small fund for students who could not afford supplies, and the promise of feeding their son consistent meals, sending Doran to Hogwarts became a promising situation for him.

Still, during his time at Hogwarts, Rory could not afford to spend money on Hogsmeade weekends, and he often opted out. His parents did their best to send him Christmas and birthday gifts, but money was always scarce and with the gifts came a sense of guilt. Rory knew that the money they were spending on him could have been spent on his brothers, or on bills that were probably overdue. He made some close friends at Hogwarts, including Flynn Hughes and Akiva Katz-Eleor. However, he and Yoko Yukawa did not get along at all. He found friends among fellow muggleborns, halfbloods, and 'blood traitor' purebloods. It didn't take long for him and his professors to realize that he had a green thumb-- much of his spare time was spent in the Herbology greenhouses. He was prone to sneaking out into the Forbidden Forest in search of rare or unusual plants. As a result, Rory also spent plenty of time in detention.

In his 7th year, he was in a group of muggleborns (including Stoney Bird, Maiko Biladeau-Yukawa and Ryannon Sage) who were caught by snatchers. He managed to distract them after a couple days, allowing the others to escape. However, he was taken to Azkaban. After the war, he went back to school the next year and graduated.

He apprenticed under the herbologist, Ianto Hughes for nearly two years before Cornelius De Witt hired him on at Wyrmwood. He has spent approximately ten years working there. Even entry-level jobs at Wyrmwood paid well, and he found himself thriving with the more difficult and volatile flora. Any extra money that he had, he converted to muggle money and sent home to his parents. All he wants is to make sure his family is comfortable, and if that means he has to live in a cramped flat, then so be it.

Fun Facts

  • He was named after his paternal grandfather
  • All of his friends have seen him naked at least once. It's a rite of drunken passage.
  • He believes that muggle lemon-lime flavored pop is a cure for any ailment, healing potions be damned. You have dragonpox? Have some 7 up. You're terribly hungover? Have a sprite.
  • He absolutely, absolutely, HATES seeing healers. He will postpone it until the problem gets so bad that he has no other choice.
