The Fontaines are pureblood traditionalists from Savoie region in France. Related indirectly to Paul Fontaine, a French diplomat, his two granddaughters competed in the 2010 Tetrawizard Tournament. René is not a true Fontaine, but uses the name for business. He buys and sells antiques, curiosities, much like an auctioneer. Anything that has some value to be resold, even with a little repair, is of interest. He is an expert in house clearances.
As well as good legitimate trade, René earns a little extra off the books by being a fence. He sells stolen goods, and can assist with money laundering. In 2010 he began to handle goods for Ira Almasy by Jebediah Layton and Johann Storm. But in early 2011, after six months of decent work with them, René attempted to anonymously tip-off the French Ministry regarding a shipment of antique creature eggs, which had a live Chimaera egg hidden amongst them. His reasons were that his fee for handling Class A Non Tradeable was too low.
Fontaine was meant to handle the receipt and swiftly send the eggs on with new papers within France. Instead, a young British Ministry customs officer had turned up sniffing at paperwork in a Diagon Alley office on a tip which it later transpired René may have kindly disclosed under a pseudonym. Layton and Storm abandoned their original plans and found other routes via Southern France. They suspect he is behind some other 'hiccups' in recent months.
Jebediah Layton has enough, and captures Fontaine, holding him in London for interrogation.
