Ravenna Blackthorne

From Absit Omen Lexicon

Ravenna has many good qualities to her name, but some of these qualities such as a knowledge enthusiast and questioning everything (including politics and social structure) can become dangerous. She is friendly and at the same time socially awkward, something she is working on improving, but very insightful and amazingly loyal. As a creature of habit, should her personal schedule get unexpectedly changed, Ravenna may become an unpleasant girl to deal with for a time.

History

Crispin Moore was an adventurous young sailor who had not a penny to his name. He was little more than a petty naval officer serving in the British military. He loved to read and explore, but most of all he loved the ladies when they pulled in to port. A bar fight, however, gave him a broken arm and he was forced to stay in a hospital for observation.

That was when he first met Elise Blackthorne. She was a half-blood (half-blood mother, wizarding father) who was visiting her Muggle grandfather who was on the brink of death. She had recently graduated from Hogwarts and was ready to begin her career as an Auror when she encountered the handsome (and persistent) Crispin. Each day, she would visit her grandfather and spend time at Crispin's bedside as well to listen to his stories of adventure. Crispin made her laugh and, gradually, the two began to fall in love. Crispin got better and asked her on a date, but she refused him: she had too much on her mind with her grandfather on his deathbed.

Although he deeply regretted having to leave Elise behind, Crispin had to ship out when commanded now that he was better. Shortly after he left, her grandfather died and grief struck the Blackthorne family. Elise eventually moved on and buried herself in her Auror career.

One night, however, reports of a ship being attacked by dark wizards had Elise and other Aurors rushing to the scene. Washed up on shore were hundreds of dead bodies and little more than a handful of survivors--one of which was Crispin. He said he saw the whole thing and after giving his statement to the Aurors, his memory was washed away by other Ministry workers. Regardless, Elise took him to a safe location and nursed him back to health. He remembered her from the hospital and again asked her out. This time, with no excuse to give him, Elise said yes.

The relationship worked out well for the first year. He was frequently called out to sea which meant that Elise didn't have to worry about her "secret" getting out. She could live freely without having to hide. That lasted up until three months after their first year anniversary when Elise discovered she was pregnant. She immediately told Crispin. Although he was excited to hear the news, he was also quite petrified. Having a baby was an adventure he looked forward to, but also a terrifying one. The two agreed to marry before she began to show and, to ease her father's worries of carrying on the family name, Elise convinced Crispin to take her last name.

Crispin was out at sea when Ravenna was born. By the time he returned, she was eight months old and ready to do anything. He had saved up plenty of money to be able to take care of his family and purchased a flat in London near Elise's parents. Her work was busier than ever and as she disappeared for hours, sometimes even days, at a time, Crispin began to question his wife's loyalty. At last, she could hide it no longer and told Crispin of her heritage. He was shocked, to say the least, but grew to accept her lifestyle. When he shipped out once again, Ravenna stayed with her grandparents (the Blackthorne's) while her mother went to work.

Ravenna had a conflicted childhood since her grandparents tried to raise her one way and her parents tried to raise her another. "Don't do that!" at her parents' would become "That's okay, sweetheart" at her grandparents'; her grandmother's strict expectations of manners and formality were tossed out the door when Ravenna was with Elise, who wanted her to "express herself". It was very confusing for Ravenna until Elise and Crispin could no longer afford the flat and had to move in with Elise's parents in the wizarding world. That's when the arguments got horrid between Elise & Crispin and the Blackthorne's, who were stuck in their traditional ways of raising children.

After nearly a solid of year of constant bickering, Crispin could no longer handle the life with Elise, the Blackthorne's, and the wizarding world. He left on a ship and did not return with it. Eventually, divorce papers arrived in the mail. Elise never signed them yet she also made no attempts to contact him. She simply pretended he didn't exist. Blaming her parents for the ending of her marriage, Elise packed her things and took Ravenna back to London, making it perfectly clear before they left that she wanted nothing to do with either of them. Elise purchased a cheap House Elf named Scribbles to watch her daughter while she worked.

Scribbles was Ravenna's first real teacher who taught her arithmetic, speech, and how to cook and how to read. As a fast learner, the little witch went through her children's books at an alarming rate and tried to find other reading material. The Daily Prophet was the most consistent material and on occasion she would see her mother in the papers. Around the age of eight, she began to show magical abilities and at age eleven, she finally received her Hogwarts letter. Scribbles and her mother took her shopping for her school supplies and they both saw her off at Platform 9 3/4.
