Plot:The Scavenger Hunt

From Absit Omen Lexicon

The 'Scavenger Hunt' is an Ancient Runes project for the Fourth Years that will span the fall 2009 term of Hogwarts.

As introduced in the first Runes class of the school year, each fourth-year will find something within (or a part of) the Hogwarts castle/grounds that has to do with Runic magic and symbols. The student will spend a few months researching and studying it in-depth.

Fourth-years are allowed to ask the older students for help with complicated magic (interested older students will get some form of extra credit), and they are required to keep Aileen updated on their progress. By 'required', I mean that I'll leave it open for them to schedule a visit in October with Aileen, so she can offer guidance and let them know if they are on the right track. In November, they'll present their research project.

Remember, Runic magic often supports or enhances other types of magic, and does not necessarily have to include the Elder Futhark (what we think of when we hear 'runes'). This project can focus on any form of written magic and magical symbols.

Additional Information

Schedule

  • End of September: Project Proposals due.
  • October: Fourth Years meet individually with Aileen for an update on their progress.
  • End of November: Presentations.
  • December: Some form of midterms (likely unrelated to the project).

Goals

  • Understand how to begin to do intensive research.
  • Learn how to properly handle magic that may be above their skill level.
  • Learn more about the castle in which they live.
  • Learn when to ask for help; allow the older years a chance to tutor/assist the younger ones.

Available Resources

Each student will have:

  • A basic map of Hogwarts.
  • Their Runes textbook and supplies.
  • The library.
  • Scheduled visits with Aileen.
  • A project outline which offers ideas and lists the names of older students to approach for help:

Project Ideas

Since it can be tricky to figure out if an aspect of the castle would have to do with Runic magic, please PM me when you have picked an idea so we can brainstorm together. I will also make a note of who is doing what, so the students' projects don't overlap. Pick an idea below or make your own!

  • Moving staircases
  • Magical mirrors, like a foe glass or two-way mirrors
  • Hidden or restricted passages
  • Floo system/Floo communication (Perhaps the Hogwarts fireplaces are built with runes to limit who can use them)
  • Hogwarts portraits, tapestries, photographs (How they move around, how they communicate and connect to one another, how the setting in the artwork changes. Maybe it has to do with the frames used, maybe it has to do with hidden paint or thread)
  • Statues, armor (What is the function of a statue or statue(s), how is the armor designed or called to defend the castle, etc)
  • Room of Requirement (or anything inside of it!)

Presentation Ideas

  • Traditional lecture
  • Traditional essay (they would read a section aloud to the class)
  • Create a mini-model of the object or place
  • Show how a part of it or version of it can be used in their everyday life.
  • Other ideas welcome!
