"What's funny, Devlin, is that so much pressure is put on young people to make lasting career choices at your age. Your brain is misshapen and your soul is still swimming around inside your chest cavity in pieces, like the ankle bones of a little baby. How you can be expected to make life-long choices in that condition seems like a gamble. "Speaking on that... do you have any fives?"Knox Greyfriar
June 17, 2008
Dear Master Devlin Matthews & Mister Knox T. Greyfriar,
This letter has been sent to you in accordance to the wishes of the late Lucretia Santoya Matthews, which she stipulated in her final will and testament kept on file here at the offices of Gershwin, Drinkwater & Haggarty, esquires. The letter was to be mailed upon Master Devlin's coming of age at 17 years.
You are requested by the deceased to meet one another in the reading library of the British Museum in London at 8pm one week after you receive the letter. Once you arrive, you have been directed by the deceased to procure the collected works of Sophecles and turn to page 444.
The deceased also wishes to extend her apologies and deepest love to you both.
Signed,
Ms Ida K. Gershwin

Standing, he shrugged his sweatshirt back on and zipped it up roughly, his anger slightly placated at the violent move. Refusing to look at Knox, he added "... The only way you can help me is to stay the hell out of my life. You live your life and let me live mine...No letters, no gifts... no visits... Just stay the hell away..." He paused and looked at Knox blankly for a moment before sneering "... Hope I don't see ya around... Dad."Devlin Matthews
"Of course he doesn't," Tulojow said, figuring with Knox she didn't have to coat your words. "He's a teenager. You could have been there every day since the day he was born and chances are he'd probably still not want anything to do with you now."Tulojow Nagde
Knox had really tried to smile. He really really had. But when Devlin was the one who slipped into the pub, wearing that get up and ordering what he did ... Knox knew the kid was doing it all on purpose. Just like he always had done when Knox had been Headmaster Greyfriar. That air of superiority, as if he was daring someone to cross him.
Back then, there had been some sort of sympathy. Some part of Knox that had tried to nurture Devlin. Give him the chances he needed to succeed and use his powers for the forces of common decency. Harnessing that rebel spirit towards something other than personal satisfaction. But Knox had always bristled at Matthews's taunting tone. This attitude that he was above the rules.
And even now, Devlin was baiting him.Knox Greyfriar
