Eirene and Frank discover they have contracted Magical Measles while trying to get onto Platform 9 3/4. They get stranded in London (Frank with a broken nose) and they go on a scrambling journey to get themselves to Hogwarts. They break into a Floo Network waystation, but the Floo Network spits them out in Slandermouth where they encounter the horrible Norman Shufflebottom and are later retrieved by kindly mum Torrence Early. Professor Sylvain Onuris greets them at school.

Confronted by a rumor in the Hogwarts Howler that Frank has a crush on Eirene, Frank explains clumsily that he doesn't "like" her. This is hurtful to Eirene who becomes as confused as Frank about the nature of their close friendship. They part ways without a clear resolution.

In a risky move, Frank writes his older brother Figaro for advice on Eirene. Figaro's response is eventually constructive, telling him if he doesn't want to kiss her then you're just friends.
