Melanie Biladeau's father is a dentist, and her mother a nurse. Many people in her family suffered from chemical dependence or mental health issues, and it drove her to study psychology as a living. She became a marriage counselor, all while dealing with her own chronic health issues and raising her daughter, Maiko, and her stepson, Kohaku. She loved to dance and sing, and was fantastic at kareoke. She grew up in a wealthy family, with horses,ballet practice, private language tutors, and large parties with her parents' rich friends.
She was 18 when she met Kazuo Yukawa while gift shopping for her mother's birthday. The two engaged in small talk, and his deft-of-hand magician's tricks amused her. They were both young, and enjoyed each other's company. They started dating casually. Melanie assumed it would be a short term thing-- after all, he was from Japan and had family he had to go home to. Before he was about to leave, she discovered that she was pregnant. They got married against the wishes of both their families, though her's was more accepting than his was.
She gave birth to Maiko soon after her 19th birthday, joking that it was her gift to herself. It had been a difficult pregnancy with her lupus and her studies, though she was pleased with the result. Kazuo wanted to own his own farm, rather than work for somebody else. He found a nice property in Ireland in 1982, and left to take care of it. The long distance relationship was difficult for Melanie. Mai missed her father horribly. It put a strain on their marriage, and they eventually decided to take a break, much to her parents' delight. Both saw other people during this time, though they didn't divorce. Their marriage was an emotional one before he had moved for work-- Kazuo and Melanie felt things very deeply, and were quick to get their feelings hurt. Kazuo struggled with her physical health, and she struggled with his mental health.
Finally, they decided the only way their relationship would work, is if they were actually able to be there for each other. She found a job in Limerick as a Marriage Counselor, and moved so they could be together again. Soon after, they discovered that Kazuo got somebody pregnant. The mother didn't want him, so they took him in and Melanie loved him like her own. Kohaku still had contact with his biological mother, though volatile.
The summer before Maiko's 11th birthday, Melanie was shocked to discover that her daughter was a witch. Kazuo didn't seem as surprised, which made her suspicious though she never pressed him-- just like she never pressed him about how well his plants grew or how quickly he got work done, even when he wasn't using tools.
Her health continued to decline-- it was difficult to find a medical regimen to make her body work the way it was supposed to. She died in Maiko's second year of Hogwarts. Her husband joined her approximately a year later.
