Marie was the only child of Rudolf and Katrine Waldgraf and knew comfort and privilege for most of her childhood.
In 1982, she began studying medieval history at the Free University of Berlin. Two years later, she met Gerhard Schlagenweit while visiting some friends in East Berlin. The two married the following spring.
Marie filled the role of quiet trophy wife well and enjoyed the relative ease of the privileged life. Though she enjoyed whatever boasting privileges her children offered her in social settings, she left the raising of her children to the hired staff and boardings schools, as soon as they were old enough to attend.
Marie was murdered Christmas morning, 2008 along with Gerhard and her youngest daughter, Anna. She is buried with the rest of her family at the family estate at Schonau am Königsee.
