Johann Storm

From Absit Omen Lexicon

Johann is a linguist and also the Deputy Head of the Department of International Magical Co-operation for the British Ministry of Magic. He is married to Balfour Spectre and has three children, Feliks Spectre, Artis Spectre and Lennox Spectre.

Childhood and Family

Alumni of Durmstrang, Johann was born in Hanover, Germany but grew up in Frankfurt as his parents both worked for Chrysopoeia. Johann's father was Wolfgang Storm, and his mother Camille Storm. His great uncle was famous former Durmstrang's headmaster, Merik Storm, he is a cousin to Ignan Storm, Sasha Schlagenweit, third cousin to Elixa Mordent and by extension, Gabrielle Murray.

Profession

After graduating, he traveled much around the world to improve his linguistic skills. On returning to Germany, he became a consulting linguist for the hospitals, tradesmen and Ministry. He earned considerable amounts for accurately translating legal documents and contracts, documents that tradesmen were reluctant to draw up by magic as they could be tampered with. He also taught languages to a handful of paying customers.

Life in Britain

2009

Johann left Germany in a hurry in January 2009 after trying to assist the Germany ministry in convicting a criminal who had sought Johann for help. The Ministry handled it poorly, and Johann fled the revenge sought by the criminal. He began a life in Britain, hoping to be employed in the Ministry of Magic. He was soon employed as a part time linguist/translator with the Department of International Magical Cooperation. Later in 2009 this became a full time post, and he supervised interns Adelia Delacroix and Sasha Schlagenweit.

From summer 2009, he lived with Colin Downer one of his best friends. In late 2009 Johann struggled with a sleeping potion addiction leading to Sleeping Potion Overdose. The circumstances of which led to him meeting Arcturus Hollingbury.

2010

In January 2010 it was revealed he had become engaged to werewolf and healer, Hannah Bombay, which occurred on Christmas Day 2009. This was a surprise to many of those close to Johann. It was of course a sham, led by confusion between the two friends, and they called it off.

Late January 2010, he became romantically involved with Arcturus Hollingbury, though this was not made public, partly due to Arcturus being Johann's assigned healer. A few months later they parted company, Arcturus going to Malaysia to do research.

By April Johann moved into his cousin Ignan Storm's house in Godric's Hollow with house elf, Gerda.

In June, his parents Wolfgang Storm and Camille Storm arrived unexpectedly. They stayed temporarily with Ignan and Johann in Godric's Hollow. Although Ignan asks them all to move out, Johann remained living there until the end of June.

Following the retirement of Augustus Bellingham, Johann became Acting Head of Office with the translations team. During summer he stayed with a series of friends including Gabrielle Murray, Elixa Mordent, and Colin Downer, stopping in spare rooms and on sofas.

In late July 2010, he witnessed Hannah Bombay, in werewolf form, bite his father Wolfgang Storm (part of Werewolf Games). He fled to hide with Adelia Delacroix before turning himself in. He continued to move from place to place to stay, estranged from his mother, Camille Storm.

In September 2010, he began to see Balfour Spectre after a spontaneous and unexpected encounter at Le Masquerade. Late September is dominated by the wizengamot trial and eventual death of Wolfgang Storm.

October 2010 marked a change. Johann's sleeping potion addiction reached a new crisis point, and a rash interview on The Haunting Hour did not help matters at work. To cope, Johann elected to return to part-time hours, and attempted to take on more private work, most notably for Ira Almasy who also offered him a place to live at House of Atreus. Amongst this, Arcturus Hollingbury returns to Britain to add additional confusion to the situation, as he resumes his role as Johann's healer.

In November 2010, Johann was reunited suddenly with Hannah Bombay following the Werewolf Games on the night of the Remember, Remember explosions. Late November he took Balfour Spectre away to Morocco though the departure was overshadowed by bad news regarding his addiction. At the end of the month, frustrated by a lack of progress regarding Wolfgang Storm's death, Johann implored the Improper Use of Magic office for help.

December 2010 got off to no better start, as Johann unwittingly assisted Ira Almasy to contaminate St Mungo's Hospital (Poisons and Painkillers) and ended up poisoned by his sleeping potions. It is not all bad - he also moved in with Balfour Spectre and spent a happy Christmas with the Spectre clan, acknowledging properly that he had fallen in love.

2011

In January 2011, it is a new year which Johann is determined to use for the better. He resolved to learn to swim with Arcturus Hollingbury's help and made a great effort to reduce potion consumption. Ira Almasy derailed the efforts temporarily by attacking Johann when he queried the evens of Poisons and Painkillers. Luckily both Balfour Spectre and Hannah Bombay were able to step in to help. The attack also allowed Johann and Balfour to disclose their true involvement with Ira to each other and begin to form a plan. Towards the end of the month Johann turned 35.

In August 2011, the surprise arrival of Feliks Spectre meant that Johann became an adoptive parent of sorts.

On 9th September 2011, while celebrating their one year anniversary, Johann and Balfour Spectre both proposed.

2012

On 14th April 2012, Johann married Balfour Spectre and took the family name of Spectre. He also formally adopted Feliks Spectre as his son.

2013-2017

Johann entered 2013 in a much more stable position than any year before now. He and Balfour were finally free of the shadow of Ira Almasy and Jebediah Layton. The House of Atreus was at last dead and truly buried. Of course, Feliks would forever be a reminder of Ira and what she had been in their lives, but to put it behind them at long last was a relief.

Together the couple pursued their intent to raise a family. Johann had already formally adopted Feliks following his marriage to Balfour in 2012, but it was a delight to welcome Artis to the family in 2014. They named her after Balfour’s late grandmother, Balthair’s dear love. Johann was and still is besotted, as he is with Lennox.

The estate has naturally filled with life again. Johann feels much more settled as a Spectre these days. Content to share the space with his sister in law, Nathaira, and her husband, Carmichael Rosier and their daughter Cam (born 2011, aged 6). Balthair is a welcome winter guest, quelling Johann’s fears that the wizard would be lonely without his family around him. Johann’s mother, Camille, is another regular guest when she is not teaching Arithmancy at Hogwarts, or visiting her own family in France and Belgium. Occasionally, they also host Miranda and Ignan’s granddaughter, Katrine (born 2007, aged 10), since the disappearance of Miranda’s daughter, on a routine trip to negotiate with merpeople.

As one who always wished for a bigger family, Johann is content. He is kept busy with home life and also his professional life. He no longer needs to seek private client work, and the couple are financially stable, despite maintaining an estate, thanks to their generous Ministry wages and Johann’s scrupulous financial management of the books. They still manage to get abroad, sometimes as a whole family, and sometimes just with the younger two. Johann tries to make a point of taking Feliks away every summer even if it is just the two of them, to stretch him intellectually, linguistically and culturally, just as his parents did when he was that age.

At work, Johann has been kept busy with the day-to-day running of Level Five, having moved to his own office. It is still just as untidy as his desk was in the pool amongst the other linguists, but he can still locate what he needs without much of a search. (Mrs Lanningham despairs of him, though she is very much Balfour’s secretary, but now a regular guest for Sunday lunches, and godmother of children).

Johann has worked closely with Yavin Morgenthau (Head Unspeakable) with regards to the sharing of research with other Ministries, with the Department for Magical Transport over importing flying cars and such, and Magical Games and Sports with respect to Quidditch World Cups and any Tetra-wizard business. He has attended more than a few G8 3/4 and has even delivered a speech at the International Confederation of Wizards on behalf of the Ministry on Praecantatio Deliquus. He occasionally bumps into his old antagonist Hester Iravani whose post he snatched after manipulating her into a role in the Austrian Ministry to get rid of her. A truce has been called with the other irritation, Kadyn Hamilton, for the sake of Hamilton keeping his job now Johann’s his boss…!

Although over his sleeping potion addiction, Johann still occasionally experiences bouts of insomnia. These days he has healthier coping mechanisms, and it can come in handy with small children prone to waking up at night.

His German accent is still noticeable but anyone who hasn’t spoken to him in a while might also notice certain words around home or the children have taken on a Scottish hint.

Johann is associated with the Werewolf Alliance, owing to several close friends through his time in Britain being werewolves.

Of the four aspects of strategic analysis and definition it is the marshalling or situational organising role that reaches the highest development in the Field-marshal.

Hardly more than two percent of the total population, Fieldmarshals are bound to lead others, and from an early age they can be observed taking command of groups. In some cases, they simply find themselves in charge of groups, and are mystified as to how this happened.

They cannot not build organisations, and cannot not push to implement their goals. When in charge of an organisation, Field-marshals more than any other type desire (and generally have the ability) to visualise where the organisation is going, and they seem able to communicate that vision to others. Their organisational and coordinating skills tends to be highly developed, which means that they are likely to be good at systematising, ordering priorities, generalising, summarising, marshalling evidence, and at demonstrating their ideas.

Field-marshals will usually rise to positions of responsibility and enjoy being executives. They are tireless in their devotion to their jobs and can easily block out other areas of life for the sake of their work.

Superb administrators in any field Field-marshals organise their units into smooth-functioning systems, planning in advance, keeping both short-term and long-range objectives well in mind.

For the Field-marshal, there must always be a goal-directed reason for doing anything, and people's feelings usually are not sufficient reason. They prefer decisions to be based on impersonal data, want to work from well thought-out plans, like to use engineered operations - and they expect others to follow suit. They are ever intent on reducing bureaucratic red tape, task redundancy, and aimless confusion in the workplace, and they are willing to dismiss employees who cannot get with the program and increase their efficiency.

Although Field-marshals are tolerant of established procedures, they can and will abandon any procedure when it can be shown to be ineffective in accomplishing its goal. Field-marshals root out and reject ineffectiveness and inefficiency, and are impatient with repetition of error.
