How to Use the Site Features
Absit Omen has plenty of custom mods to help you organize your threads and plots, sync up your character accounts, and format your posts!
For questions about how SMF works in general, please check out the Forum Help or Ask the Curators!
Tagging
How to use tags to the best effect!
Tags help organize threads here on Absit Omen! Using keywords, each thread can be sorted by plots, dates, and characters involved. When tagging, keep it simple and consistent. Strive to tag dates, plotlines, and characters in a thread. Please do not tag location (like Hogsmeade, commonroom) or trivial descriptors (like 'eating', 'craziness', 'kissing', etc). Tagging is useful, but it should not replace putting important information (such as dates, an 'M' for mature content, and 'Open') in the title of your thread.
You can add your character's tag page to your profile, so that a link will appear beneath your avatar in every post. To add your character's tag page, go to your Profile, then Forum Profile, and input the url in the 'Threads' field at the bottom. Big or small plots can have their own tag! Just talk to your fellow writers to pick one, and use short phrases (two or three words) to make a plot tag.
To find tags, go to the Tags page (located at the top of the forum in the navigation bar), then use 'Ctrl F' to search through the list.
How to Tag
- When you create or reply to a thread, you have the option of adding tags in the 'Tags' field underneath the 'Subject' field of your post.
- Use already existing tags as often as possible.
- Once you post, your tags will appear at the top of the thread. You can delete or add new tags there.
- You are welcome and encouraged to tag others' threads as well, not just your own!
Where to Tag
- Tag your character name in your character's biography, network, and in-character threads.
- Tag plot development threads with the same tag you used for in-character threads involved in that plot.
- Please do not tag other types of out-of-character threads.
Tag Formats
Separate tags with commas, and please do not include brackets, parentheses, or other extras around the tag. Just simple text will do! The bullets below show examples.
- Dates
- January 1 2008 (This format identifies the specific day).
- January 2008 (This tag identifies all threads in that month).
- Plots
- Remembering Day Murders
- Runespoor Smuggling
- Akiva Katz Kidnapping
- Characters
- Fauna Blake (This is an individual character tag. Please use the full name)
- Devlin and Fauna (A pairing tag; no full name necessary)
- Classes
- Class (The tag used to identify every class thread)
- Ancient Runes (A class tag for a specific subject)
Potential Glitches
- Tags recognize punctuation (like capitalization) only when you first create or reply to a thread.
Drafts
Start a post and save it for later!
- When you begin a post, you can choose to 'Save as Draft'.
- Once a draft is saved, you can access drafts from your profile. Go to 'profile' (located at the top of the site in the middle), click 'profile info', click 'show posts', and then click 'drafts'. From there, you can edit your drafts and then post them like you would a regular post.
- Drafts will not save poll information, attachments or calendar events.
Note:Sometimes, when posting to a thread from a draft, the thread will automatically lock. You'll have to unlock it for others to respond.
Notepad
Personal notes and reminders
- You can access the Notepad by going to your profile (located at the top of the site in the middle), then clicking on 'notepad'. Notepad can open in a new browser window or a popup.
- To start a new note, click on 'Add New Note' or 'Add Note'.
- When you've saved a note, your list of notes will appear on the left-hand side of Notepad, under the 'Add new note' link. When editing them, click on the 'Edit Note' button to save your changes.
- Notes cannot use BBC or HTML code, and are text only.
Avatars
125x125 squares of character genius.
You can either upload an avatar image of 125x125 pixels to the board, or upload it elsewhere and link to it. Avatars need to be registered with the avatar registry before they can be used.

For the lexicon, please upload a 250x250 pixel image.
Signatures
Finish each post with a flourish!
To edit the signatures for an account, sign in and select profile from the top menu, then forum profile from the side menu to access the settings. In the signature boxes you can use normal bbcode to set images and text.
Remember, the total area of your entire signature, including both pictures and text cannot exceed 600 x 200 pixels.
- Each account can have up to 5 signatures!
- You can select which signature (or no signature) you'd like to display in posts and PMs. (Attachments and other options)
We can now show/hide signatures at the board level.
