Hogwarts Rules

For Students
All students are expected to know and follow Hogwarts' school rules. They may be broken, but students must be prepared to face consequences if caught.
- Students should be in uniform during class hours.
- Students must attend classes and be on time.
- Students must respect each other and obey staff.
- Students may not leave the grounds without permission.
- Students may not leave their houses/common rooms after 10pm.
- No magic is to be used in the halls. Practice in appropriate areas is permitted.
- The Forbidden Forest is forbidden to unsupervised students.
- Each student is permitted a single pet: cat, rat, owl, or toad.
Hogwarts Dress Code
During the school year, students are also expected to follow the school dress code.
- Between the hours of breakfast and dinner on week days, students should be in uniform.
- Trousers/skirts should be black or grey.
- Skirts and other non-uniform bottoms may be no shorter than 3 inches above the knee.
- Collared white shirts should be worn with uniforms. Tops may not expose midriff or lower back.
- House ties are required to be worn.
- Shoes should be black/gray, close-toed, heels no higher than two inches.
- Vests, cloaks, gloves, winter coats, stockings/socks, and jackets should be white/black/gray. Embellishments of house colors or crests are allowed.
- No hats are allowed to be worn with uniforms with the exception of a pointed wizard's or witch's hat.
- All clothing should be clean and devoid of obvious stains, rips, tears.
- No part of clothing/accessories may contain any rude, profane, or offensive text, photos, or meaning.
Prefects
- Six Prefects are appointed for each house by the Heads of House. Two each from the fifth, sixth, and seventh years.
- Two Head Students (also called Head Girl and Head Boy) are chosen from the seventh year prefects.
- Prefects and Head students may be of any gender. This is official policy as of fall 2011, but was informally permitted before then from time to time.
- Prefects may give detentions as punishment to other students.
- They may take points away from students in their own house.
Legal Matters
- The Ministry of Magic must have permission from the Headmaster to come to the school, unless it is a life or death matter.
- Magical Law Enforcement may not interview students while at school without permission from either the student's guardian or the Headmaster.
Werewolf Matters
- Werewolf students and staff are welcome at Hogwarts. See Hogwarts#Werewolves_at_Hogwarts
- Werewolf students and staff must be registered with the Werewolf Wing
- Hogwarts is not required to disclose the werewolf status of any individual or even acknowledge that there are any present.
- There are no approved safe houses at Hogwarts as of Jan 2012.
- Traditionally the Potions Master at Hogwarts is allowed to brew Wolfsbane Potion on premises for school use.
