Global Gramophone
A popular device among all age-groups, that is spoken into in one language and then announces what has just been said back in another language. It is known for finding the proper word and using correct pronunciation when someone is in a jam, however is not practical beyond personal use.
How to Use
First, one puts a record onto the device, corresponding with the pair of languages they require (for example English and French). Each record is double sided, to translate in either direction (for example English to French on one side, and French to English on the other). Once the needle is set onto the record, one then speaks into the speaker of the Gramophone. It will then speak back an exact translation in another language with the speaker's own voice.
The Global Gramophone is scathingly exact, to this effect, and is not a substitute for a proper linguist, nor does it make someone fluent in another language; It may even cause hysterical laughter or gross misunderstandings if used in such a way.
At Absit Omen
From the TetraWizard Tournament Opening Ceremonies (August 2 2009) and onward, Global Gramophones are vital at various festival events to help the delegations overcome their language barriers.
Sissel Jowd utilized several for a 1st year History of Magic lesson to meet the Black Lake Merpeople colony. Creating a Mermish record to translate had been tricky. [1]
