Gideon McElroy

From Absit Omen Lexicon

Gideon McElroy was a Gryffindor student.

Personality Description

Gideon’s personality is also completely different than his brother’s. While Trystan can get by in classes by doing the minimum amount of work and be all calm and lazy, Gideon believes that he will never get the job he wants unless he does extremely well at school. He’s very studious for a Gryffindor. He’s quick to anger, but will not lash out at anybody unless he believes the comment was a direct insult of someone in his family that doesn’t include Trystan. Gideon hates all mention of his brother Trystan and whenever someone brings him up in conversation; Gideon tenses up and refuses to talk anymore.

In school Gideon hasn't been totally accepted into Gryffindor as most of his housemates feel he would of been better suited into Ravenclaw. In his second year he had taken to do his excessive studying in the common room, library, or any free space he could find because his dormmates didn't like the habit he had of staying up at night when the rest had gone to bed and he still had his curtains closed with his wand light at full strength.

As for the TetraWizard Tournament, Gideon could care less, of course, it would of been awesome if he'd been able to participate, but since there was an age limit, he's taken to watching the Durmstrang students, trying to learn something that they haven't tought him yet at Hogwarts. He's not caught onto anything yet, but he's determined to try.

Gideon's penchant for studying anything and everything (he swears he's read most of the history books in the school's library) means that the people in the friendship department are zero. He doesn't really care for friends, believing that they'll only stand in the way of his dream career. (kind of like Rachel Berry in the first season of Glee)

History

Trystan was three years old when his brother was born, and at first, he was overjoyed at the fact that he had a little brother. It didn't last long. As soon as little Gideon could walk, he followed Trystan everywhere. Trystan began to go up the stairs, or climb trees to stay away from his annoying kid brother.

When Gideon learned to talk things got better for a time, until Gideon became the spoiled little kid that blamed everything on his older brother. All the time, the boys' parents would hear constant tattling and it was wearing on their patience.

"Dad, Trystan stole a cookie." "Mom, Trystan didn't wipe his feet when he came inside." "Dad, Trystan's running in the house." "Mom, Trystan's going to hit m...."

And of course the lovely times when they were called into their father's study because something had happened and the parents didn't know which son had caused the damage.

"Boys, which one of you broke the window in the upstairs hallway."

Before Trystan could reply... "Trystan did Dad, I saw him outside throwing a ball at the house." Gideon gleefully replied. Trystan glared at his brother before looking at his father, "I didn't break the window, I was at the park with my friends all morning."

Gideon rarely got into trouble, he knew he was the favored child by his mother and he milked it for all it was worth. Even to the point of straining the relationship between mother and father by running to his mum when his father was meaning to dole out punishment.

When Gideon was 9 years old, he and his brother Trystan were heading to a field close by where they could kick a ball around. Before they left the manor, his mother told Trystan to watch out for him and to let her know if anything went wrong while they were gone. Gideon rolled his eyes as they walked away from her and said to his brother, “Let’s race.” Before Trystan could tell him that it wasn’t a good idea, Gideon was off and running.

Now, Trystan took a run with his mother every morning so he could easily catch up, but on this particular day he had wanted to go spend some time with his muggle friends before leaving for Hogwarts and instead his parents had made him spend the day with his brother. So he let Gideon run ahead and only half chased after him. Before he knew it though, Gideon was no where to be seen. He rushed ahead to see if he could catch up with his brother, but still couldn't see him anywhere.

After looking all over for his brother for an hour, Trystan gave up and went home. He told his parents what had happened and they went back to look for Gideon. They found him under a tree, eating an apple he'd picked. When asked where he went he told his mother with puppy dog eyes, "I tried to keep up with Trystan, but he runs so fast I had to stop and then I couldnt' find him." Now, for a change, their mother knew it wasn't true, for even though the brother's had a very strained relationship she knew that Trystan would never leave his brother behind like that, he was too protective of his family.

So after being grounded for three months and an even longer ban from hanging out with his friends, Gideon blamed Trystan for getting him in so much trouble and since he has the ability to hold grudges forever, he still hasn't forgiven him and loathes the mention of his brother to this day.

Going to Hogwarts wasn't always Gideon's plan, in fact, when he recieved his letter, he spent three hours in his father's study trying to convince his parents that Durmstrang would be a better choice to send him. He didn't want to go to the same school Trystan went to and always be looked at like Trystan's little brother. But as his mother didn't want to send him so far away and his father agreed with anything his mother said, he was sent to Hogwarts. But he's done everything he can to step out of his brother's shadow and become his own person.

Gideon enjoys being in Gryffindor for the most part, but there's something he can't quite get used to about it. Most of the time he feels that he doesn't belong, once, in his first year, he tried to change his house to Ravenclaw by convincing another first year that he was in Ravenclaw and that he'd just forgotten the password. It only lasted about two minutes when the prefects came back after rounds and saw him sitting on the couch. It probably would of worked for a little longer had he remembered to leave his Gryffindor tie in his dorm instead of in his bookbag.

Although Gideon is regularly serious and studious, there are times when he gets the idea to do something completely foolish and sometimes even dangerous. His first year he provoked a 3rd year Slytherin and ended up in the infirmary for most of the day. (Turns out not all Slytherins appreciate being called evil minions of everything dark). His 2nd year he decided to take a leisurely stroll into the girls' changing rooms of the Quidditch stadium. It took two days in the infirmary to get rid of all the spots, bruises, and hexes the girls used. And at the end of third year, two days before the students were set to go home, Gideon decided at a random moment to go for a walk in the forest. Evidently it wasn't a good day to do this, because (he didn't see what did it as it came up from behind), he was attacked by something and ended up spending two weeks of the beginning of his summer in St. Mungo's, and the rest of the summer grounded from any studying but his summer work, and no friends, no extra reading, no fun.

Rarely does Gideon get into trouble by professors, but when he does, he turns on his charm that he's been told has been passed through several generations and he's exceptionally good at making certain professors forget to give him detention, or get them talking about another subject all together and let him off with a warning. It worked alot when he was still a cute, fresh, young first year, but with each year he gets older, the ability loses some of it's charm on professors.

Although Gideon prefers to ignore the fact that he has a brother completely, there are times when they'll bump paths and then Trystan will say something that will get Gideon started, a small brotherly spat will occur, they'll exchange a half-hearted punch to the stomach and before they can be reprimanded they are on their way again, content to ignore the existence of the other.

As his preferred career is any kind of Ministry employee, Gideon uses every spare moment to try and get ahead of all of his yearmates. As a result of this study habit, he's recieved mostly Exceeds Expectations in everything but Herbology. He can't stand working with plants due to most of his spare time, even during holidays and over the summer, is inside with a school book, taking notes or getting ahead in his reading. Since he hasn't chosen what kind of Ministry career he would like yet, he is just trying to do his very best in every class so that when the time comes, he can get whatever job he finally decides on. His preferred reading when studying up for whatever career he finally chooses are history books, all kinds of history, from Goblin Rebellions to Witch Burnings, to anything he thinks might help him get a leg up in the Ministry. That is also his idea for fun and he doesnt' spend much time with his housemates or dormmates for that reason. He's basically a loner who studies all the time.
