- Name: Gideon Howell
- Age: June 19, 1945 (65)
- Position: Senior Auror at the Auror Office
- Play-By: Ian McKellen
Undoubtably the most hedonistic of his brothers (without being an absolute profligate), Gideon is laid-back yet bold, shrewd yet cocky—the most charming, certainly, and unarguably fortunate to have been born last.
As the youngest, he didn’t have as many responsibilities as his brothers, and so as such he was a lot more reckless, could care less about who he offended. For his time, Gideon was wildly out-spoken. Of course, sometimes this was a good thing; when he saw something, he spoke up. He made a wonderfully fearless Auror. But as a son from a good family, he could be terribly candid.
Lenore Prewett
Still, the man had his charms, and even they were enough for the uncompromising Lenore Prewett, with whom he shared little in personality but a surprising amount of attraction. And in her own way, she was darling. After a couple of years of well-sharpened retorts and the occasional bouquet of flowers, they married. Shortly after, Thayet was born.
But this was during the Dark Lord’s first rampage, and times were grim. As reports grew more and more appalling, Gideon found himself buried in work. He missed many, if not all of Thayet’s mile-stones. By the time Voldemort had fallen, Gideon was a stranger to his daughter, and he had grown distant with his wife; after the things he’d seen, he found it hard to connect with her anymore. They began to fight over all manners of things. He was never home, she always nagged, he came home to relax, he never showed interest in his own daughter...
She was right, of course. He couldn’t be less interested; in his absence Thayet had become her little darling, this docile creature who followed her about and hung onto her every word. She would become a proper lady, he saw. She would be graceful, articulate, and charming. If she was devoted to her studies (and she was), she would uphold the family reputation; if she married well (and she did, to a respectable young man of French origins), she would have perfectly darling children. And with things strained between him and her mother, Gideon couldn’t be more repulsed.
For Thayet’s sake, they tried to find that spark again. And they must have, because a year later Hermia Howell was born. But it clearly hadn’t been the same, because two years before, Gideon... strayed.
Sabine Lestrange
Unlike Lenore, Sabine Lestrange was sultry, unusual, compelling—and breathtakingly independent. Though she was clearly a lady, she was also uncaring of conventions and norms, the rubber mallet that invisibly kept so many in check. No, society’s chains were for other people. And so she and Gideon slept together. What skin was it off her nose that he was a married man? He was the married one, and she was without family she particularly cared for. She had more pressing concerns, primarily ones about on her work. A mayfly affair was nothing.
But then she was pregnant, and, well—after Gideon’s divorce, the man kept coming around, trying to endear himself to her with his reckless ways. And it was working. Gradually, oh so gradually, Gideon ingratiated himself into her life, as well as those of their children. Much to his fascination, the twins were an odd pair, in both appearance and personality; not only did they share her striking looks, but there were hints of her in their manner, too. They were pale, solemn children, in a way that suggested they had already begun making their peace with this perplexing world around them. Claudius Howell was fretful and bashful whereas Verona Howell was direct and demanding, but both twins were sincere, and curious about things that didn’t directly affect them, or they couldn’t see. It was a refreshing - welcome - change from the children he had left behind.
It would be years later when their mother would finally agree to marry him, but until then they raised their children together regardless. With his parents (regrettably) deceased, Gideon only had his eldest brother to deal with on the matter of his intentions. A second marriage would hardly change a thing.
Unfortunately, their time was brief; a year later Sabine was killed in a freak accident at the Department of Mysteries. It was a terrible blow to all who knew her. The children withdrew into their shells–Gideon, to drink. He was still able to work, but only just. The only silver lining to be found was reconciliation with his brother, which he would have gladly traded for more time with his wife.
Hayley Goulding
A vacation with his other brother, Yorick, to the States was both welcome as it wasn’t. Yorick knew how to cut loose, somewhat, but his company was soured by the fact that it was necessary. Still, they enjoyed themselves. In fact, it was Yorick who introduced him to the witch who would be his next wife: Hayley Goulding.
Vivacious, ambitious and - like he - forthright nearly to a fault, she was charming, but she was also much younger than him. Though she was a refreshing change to his otherwise gloomy life, the age difference often set them worlds apart. At first it looked like it would only be fling.
But Hayley was a smart witch, and in the weeks they knew each other it was clear she was more than able to surprise him. So they kept in touch. Months passed, and then a year. Eventually – inevitably – her patience paid off; in the summer of 1999, they married. Ten months later, Arthur Howell was born.
Present
Gideon Howell is a respected Auror, a grandfather, and a functioning alcoholic. He is somewhat closer to Hermia, but Claudius and Verona are still his favorites, and he tries to spend as much time with Arthur as much as he can. He has little to no contact with Thayet (Thayet St. Martin, now) and his granddaughter, Isolee St. Martin. He is amused by his brother's granddaughter, Gracie Slant.
