Futurists

From Absit Omen Lexicon

Futurists are a subset of wizards and witches who believe that the future of magical civilisation depends on its integration with muggle concepts - especially aesthetically and on a technological level.

They are a social movement that has been quickly gaining support and controvery in wizarding society, both in the UK as well as in the United States.

Idealogy

Futurism revolves around the notion that muggle culture must be integrated into magical society. To some Futurists, this integration takes place within the Statute of Secrecy - i.e. as a welcoming of muggle ideas, aesthetics, and media.

Other Futurists take more radical positions and support a gradual dissolution of the Statute of Secrecy so that muggle society may also benefit from a two-way relationship between cultures.

Extremism

However, certain Futurists (such as Alistair Ramakrishnan or secret Futurist Leon Halloran) believe that the Statute of Secrecy must be immediately dissolved for true integration to take place.

These extremists, known or anonymous, perpetrate acts of terror to this end. Most notably they were responsible for the Halloween incident in 2012: Halloween Hijinks: A Breach Averted

Since then, the extremists have restricted themselves to smaller breaches and are also involved in actively finding muggleborn wixes online as a way of recruiting people to their cause.

Movement Members

When Futurism first began attracting wixes, Futurists were usually in their early 40s or older. However, the idealogy naturally began to attract younger people and now a variety of wixes find themselves interested in the movement.

Some Futurists are wizarding professionals who have taken to opening their businesses on muggle premises outside of traditional wizarding areas - with the aim of also adopting muggle designs.

Gatherings

Those interested in joining a Futurist group or in socialising with them will find that many Futurists gather at Hopworts Brewing Co. in the evenings. It has become a safe space for most Futurists (excepting the extremists) to voice their thoughts on the movement.

The Coal Mine

The Coal Mine in Canary Wharf is a modern office building, in which several floors are rented out to businesses owned by Futurists, such as Ramakrishnan & Rowan. Floors 7, 8 and 9 belong to the Department of Mysteries.
