Eirene Antonopoulos

From Absit Omen Lexicon

Eirene is used to being the “good girl”: obeying her parents and professors, adhering to a strict schedule, doing everything a certain way and doing well in everything she does. She’s intelligent but likes to talk (which often gets her into trouble) and she secretly wants to try new things that her family might not approve of.

History

Eirene was born in late November as the first and only child of Nikolas and Cecily Antonopoulos. She arrived right on time, making her mother happy because she didn’t have to schedule an extra week off of work. Her parents are very driven, serious people and content to devote their affections to one child- a good thing, too, since they don’t have a lot of affection to give.

Her Father is a lawyer at the Ministry and her Mother is a Healer (mainly for potions and plant poisoning) at St. Mungo’s. They met when they were in their mid-twenties at the hospital. Nikolas’s brother had been accidentally poisoned (at least, they hope it was accidental) and Cecily was the one to nurse him back to health. Rather than fall in love with the patient, she fell for the man who visited everyday throughout the long healing process. Eventually the brother survived. It was a romantic beginning for the couple, but that’s where all the romance ends. They married as much for the sharing of their substantial funds as they did for love, if not more. They have the same attitudes and backgrounds, get along very well, and each go about their busy schedules until they come home in the evening and greet each other politely.

Ten years ago, when Voldemort was at his most powerful, Nikolas and Cecily kept living their lives as normally as they could. Both coming from mostly pure-blood families (they’d never admit to any muggle blood), they had no real reason to be afraid or change their habits. Even if the muggles had invaded wizarding London instead of Voldemort, Eirene’s parents would probably get up at the same time in the morning, go to work, and come home late at night. Though contributing magical citizens, their apathetic attitude towards anything that doesn’t personally affect them can be rather frightening. Family and themselves are the most important, while other people are regulated to the “Oh what a shame, what’s for dinner?” attitude.

It’s no surprise that they treat Eirene fairly but coldly. When she does what she’s told and succeeds, she’s rewarded with a small amount of praise, like an extra cookie for dessert or a new hat. If she makes a mistake or disobeys, they won’t quite punish her but their silent disapproval speaks for itself. They live very regimented lives and have taught Eirene to be the same way. Because her parents spend so much time working, the child rearing has been left to the nanny and the family house elf. Of course, that doesn’t mean it’s a free for all. Her parents are careful to give the household staff very strict, exact instructions for taking care of Eirene. She’s been shuffled from activity to social function all of her young life and has never had much of a chance to be a kid or explore the things she’d like to do. No one has ever asked her. Despite this, she’s rather happy with her music lessons, private tutoring, reading, and horseback riding. Luckily she’s discovered a talent for many of the things she’s assigned. The fact remains, however, that she doesn’t understand what it’s like to do something spontaneously or without a set goal in mind.

Eirene has also been very sheltered. She has little experience with other social classes and little to none experience with muggles. Her parents won’t talk badly of others or allow Eirene to be rude, but the line is very clearly drawn and Eirene is expected to show no interest in the non-magical world or the lower classes. Their expectations of her are high and they actively push her interests into proper directions. Recognizing this, she tries to be a good daughter, but sometimes wishes she could branch out.

Eirene is spoiled in the sense that she gets every material thing she wants if she behaves (in fact, that is the main way her parents show that they care about her). She only has a vague idea that other kids might not be as privileged or wealthy as she is. Not everyone gets to go on vacation with their best friends, pester the nanny, ride horses, or decorate a bedroom the size of a small house. Hogwarts is going to be shocking to her- full of chaos and all sorts of people that she’s never been exposed to before.

Her life has been so regimented that she only has time for one friend: her best friend, Effie. She’s known her since they were babies and tries to mirror her attitudes and behavior, thinking her to be the most interesting young person around (even if she’s not always the nicest). Eirene puts Effie on a pedestal and lets her boss her around. She’s not quite sure if Effie likes her all of the time, but at least she tolerates her, and that’s all she really expects from a friend. Eirene has grown up around other wealthy, pure-blooded kids but hasn’t formed close friendships with anyone else. She’s also an only child and feels more comfortable with adults than she does with children her own age. This raises the question: if the child talks and no one is around to hear her, does she still make a sound? Yes, yes she does. She’ll chatter to dolls, stuffed animals, imaginary friends, and even her own reflection in the mirror if she gets bored enough.
