  • Occupation: Former CIA agent (retired)

Appearance

At 6’5”, Eamon is muscular, bulky and big-bellied. He is thinning at the top (graying), though he often has a very big beard and equally thick (if not more so) brows, as if a migration were moving from his scalp to his face. There are scars and callouses everywhere, and a rather nasty burn on his chest.

Born Eamon Burkhardt, "Slant" was just a nickname he'd been given by old colleagues until he legally changed it in his mid-30's. A man of few words and even fewer smiles, Gracie’s grandfather is a grim, taciturn man with little patience for the flashy and capricious. After more than twenty years of explosions and gunfire– and the undercurrent of agonized screams– he prefers his quiet undisturbed, interrupted only for good reason. He dislikes – and distrusts – small talk; personal questions are viewed as little more than roaches.

Eamon is an accomplished hunter; the wall above their fireplace is covered in mounted heads—a gift left behind by his Biała in-laws. They have played an integral part in teaching Gracie her letters, as there is something about empty, marble-like eyes that jogs one’s memory. He has also taught her tracking, trapping, and a variety of other survival skills in the event she finds herself without a wand.

At Absit Omen

Grandfather and guardian of Gracie Slant, father of Marceline Biała-Slant. He currently resides in his late wife's ancestral home, St. John's Lodge. Eamon settled down and married his high school sweetheart, Agnieszka Biała, in 1979. He does not speak of her, if he can help it.

His relationship with his estranged daughter, is strained beyond repair; he breathes a quiet sigh of relief every time she leaves, and warns his granddaughter every time she’s in town. He does not begrudge Gracie’s other grandparents of her neglect because it’s kept them far away from her, and the damage has already been done.

When he isn’t out hunting, patrolling the estate or drinking with old “friends” down at the pub, Eamon can be found at home, in front of the telly with a cold one as he whittles away to Keeping Up Appearances—or in the company of Margo Afamdi-Jones, despite a deep suspicion of magic. He is also quite friendly with Delilah Foley.

German/Polish in origin, Eamon speaks both, among others.
