A friend of Sameera Taylor, Dieter got into law early on but then realised his true calling lay not behind a desk but out in the field looking for evidence. Met Sameera as an external consultant whilst working in Canada, and became her government contact. After spending much of his career in the Canadian Ministry of Magic, he finally left for new pastures across the pond. Sameera recommended him to Mordecai Hollingbury, and he joined the Improper Use of Magic Office in January 2010 to help with the workload.
Speaks fluent English, German and French. Has a strong German accent.
Appearance
Dieter keeps his appearance smart and well-dressed, usually formal just like when he used to work in the Canadian ministry, and jokes about being able to blend in with Muggles just by depending on "some ordinary threads". He always has a neat hairstyle cut close to his head characterised with sideburns halfway down his cheeks, and has a permanent crease between his eyebrows that gives him a perpetual frown. Crow's feet decorate the outer corners of his eyes. One might say he has a lantern jaw of justice paired up with a dignified stance.
Personality
Despite his perpetual frown, he is a genuinely kindhearted person and highly generous. He looks out for his colleagues and collaborates well with them, and is far more patient with a lot of people more often than they deserve. He also has a penchant for harmless pranks and very much prefers coffee, turning the Ministry of Magic's coffee down for a more sophisticated latte from Diagon Alley. Occasionally gets into "coffee vs tea" banter with Mordecai.
He has a thing for Muggle fine arts.
Expertise
Dieter's passion for forensics began from an introduction to it via his law studies in Germany, and he began studying it when he migrated to Canada. Since then he's been known to employ many spells, charms and potions in order to deduce what happened at a crime scene. He works similar to a crime scene investigator/criminalist in the Muggle world; the difference is he uses spells and potions to reconstruct past events. Where there are gaps left by the magic he uses, his deduction comes to fill them in. While he may occasionally jokingly call his deductions "guesswork", he's noted to be reliable and competent at his job.
His history of fieldwork remains mostly undisclosed, but he refers to being involved in various government operations that remain classified. The Nov 5th Leaky Cauldron explosion has been confirmed by him as something he has had to deal with previously.
