Cult of the Phoenix

From Absit Omen Lexicon

History

The Cult of the Phoenix thrived during the first intermediate period in Egypt. While pharaohs fought for rule, the economy dwindled, and famine swept across the land, many people turned to Osiris, taking comfort in their belief of resurrection. The Cult of the Phoenix used their own pantheon of gods, and cut themselves off from the rest of the Egyptian world. They managed to find wealth and prosperity when others could not.

The Cult of the Phoenix chose to worship phoenixes, treating them as idols and gods, so that as time passed the creatures dominated all aspects of art, ritual, and culture. The wizards strove to rid disease, strengthen muscles and organs, and finally, to preserve their bodies when they died. But their rise to power came with a price. The cult's obsession with the cycle of life eventually became their ruin, and the phoenixes, disgusted by their morbid practices, abandoned them.

Dagger Plot (completed)

Aileen Reid, the Hogwarts Ancient Runes scholar, brought back a few Cult of the Phoenix artifacts from her failed excavation in Egypt in the fall of 2008. Among these, a cursed Egyptian Dagger caused some unlucky wizarding folks to lose their magic, or struggle to control it. After several dangerous mishaps involving the Cult of the Phoenix artifacts, St. Mungo's Healers (notably Delilah Foley) and Aileen Reid discovered a cure in June 2009. All appeared to go back to normal...

Future Plots

The Cult of the Phoenix may not be as lost as we think! There are a few whispers that the Cult is still around today, and just as morbid as ever.

There are a few things we could do with this:

  • The Cult is attempting to resurrect a powerful Pharaoh. In Ancient Egyptian times, Pharaohs were thought to be immortal, and they were thought to have more Kas (life force) than other people that let them become gods when they died. So, in order to resurrect their Pharoah, they need to collect souls (a person's Ba and Ka) to be able to bring him back.
  • Characters could either collect souls for the Cult, have their souls taken, or meddle in some other way!
  • Perhaps the loss of a person's Ba and Ka could cause bad dreams, insomnia, a strange mark on their skin, or a change in personality. Maybe even affect their memories.
